The five students go to the church to see what awaits them... | |||
That night, Shea called Conor on the phone. Shea sat on her bed with the latest Spin and bit her nails, a habit she had tried to cure for years but still hadn’t. “I can’t believe that girl,” she said. “Shea, you know she’s been a bitch since kindergarten. People like that don’t change,” Conor told her. “I guess you’re right. How are the fish?” Shea asked. “Happy, now that they don’t have gum floating in their house. So what about the whole haunted church scheme?” Conor asked. “Props, Conor. It was an awesome idea,” Shea said respectfully. “Yeah, I’m thinking it would be pretty damn cool if we went into that church and actually recorded paranormal activity,” Conor said, and Shea could hear him grinning through the phone. “Amen to that. I need a good scare, it wakes me up,” Shea said. “Yeah. So listen, I gotta go eat dinner. I’ll see you tomorrow, all right?” Conor told her. “Right. Bye,” Shea finished, hanging up the phone. *** The next day was one of the most miserable November days Shea had seen in her life. For the better part of the morning, it rained sheep and whistles, and Shea prayed it would stop before one. It did, but it left the whole town soggy and darkened Shea’s mood. This whole project had a dark outlook, and Shea was stricken with the what-ifs. What if the church wasn’t actually haunted, and they had nothing to film? What if the church was haunted, but the priest wouldn’t let them film there? What if she killed Melissa and Jack and got put in jail? Shea left her house at five minutes to one because she only lived a few houses down from the old church. Compared to some of the Catholic churches she’d seen, this one didn’t quite measure up. According to the little information plaque below the entrance sign, this church had once been a schoolhouse, but after being outfitted with stained-glass windows, it looked a bit more churchlike. Still, it was nowhere near up to snuff with a typical Catholic church. As she neared the church, she spotted Conor standing faithfully in front of the church, waiting for her. “Hey Con!” she shouted her greeting. “What’s up, Shea!” he shouted back. He met her halfway. “Are the others here?” Shea asked. “Not unless they’re hiding somewhere. Chrissy told me she might be a little late, but that’s no excuse for Melissa and Jack,” Conor replied. “They’re Melissa and Jack. That’s enough of an excuse,” Shea said flatly. Conor nodded. “Good point. Anyway, I hope they get here soon. I want to catch the priest before they start setting up for evening mass,” Conor said, glancing at his watch. Shea sighed and shivered against the cold. “It’s chilly out here,” she commented. “You want my jacket?” Conor offered. “Nah, I’m not that cold. Thanks anyway,” Shea refused, smiling. “Do you want to sit down?” Conor suggested. Click here to read the rest of this story (335 more lines)
