Chapter Nine - "Time's Running Out"

Ship's Log, Stardate 1739.2, First Officer Spock reporting. The
Enterprise has been sabotaged and Captain Kirk has been severely
wounded. I have regained control of the ship from the auxiliary bridge.

ENTERPRISE:

Malloy was on one of the diagnostic beds and was still unconscious. He
was held by restraints on his arms and legs. McCoy was running his
medical tricorder over Kirk. Kirk hit the Comm.

“Kirk to Spock.”

“Spock here. Are you all right, Captain?”

Kirk watched as McCoy continued to pass the probe over his chest and
side. “I'm not sure, yet. Status report, please.”

“As you observed, the bridge has been severely damaged and is
uninhabitable. Six officers are unaccounted for and presumed dead, as
most likely they were ejected into space when the dome exploded and the
bridge depressurized.”

“What else?”

“Misters Sulu and Finney are with me now manning the auxiliary bridge.
There are sixteen armed crewman out side the door, and they are under
orders to allow access to no one unless one of the bridge crew orders
it. Mr. Scott has engineering barricaded, and Miss Uhura has her own
platoon stationed outside emergency manual monitor. All security
passwords have been changed. The only commands and overrides that the
computer will accept at this point is level two or one, meaning
yourself and the command crew, “ explained Spock.

“What about weapons control?” asked Kirk, as the ache in his chest and
side did not abate.

“I have not heard from Mr. Chekov since he had a crew distribute phasers
to the three areas affected from the armory,” relayed Spock.

“You haven't heard...” he said, trying to raise his voice, but couldn't.
“Kirk out.” Snap. Snap. “Kirk to weapons.”

There was no response.

“Kirk to Chekov! Chekov, report!” Snap. Snap. “Kirk to Spock.”

“Spock here.”

“Weapons doesn't respond. Send Sulu and a team down there, and retake it
if need be. I'll meet him there,” said Kirk, as he closed the channel.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa! Where do you think you're going?” asked McCoy, who
had finished examining him.

“You heard,” said Kirk, pulling down his shirt.

“Jim, you have a severely bruised sternum and a broken rib. If you go
down there and get into another fight, the rib could puncture a lung or
you're heart,” said McCoy, holding on to Kirk's arm.

“I don't care,” said Kirk.

“Jim, if you don't sit down, so I can work on you, I will relieve you.”

Kirk stared at his friend. He had heard this many times before. “You
wouldn't dare.”

“Try me. Remember, I wouldn't just be relieving a ships' Captain, but
