(for Peg Entwistle) she jumped off the H and fell to the ground at least that's the story but what did she think on the way down did she change her mind did she finally shriek at the brutal reality of it or did she smile for the lack of it . poised to jump did she pause could something small glittering in the corner of her eye have changed her fate did she bid farewell is the story true . all that's left a microfilm of a vanished page light passing through shadows until only shadows remain "On the night of September 18, 1932, after a night of heavy drinking, she climbed the 50 foot "H" on the Hollywoodland sign (named for a real estate development) and jumped off the sign to the ground, killing herself instantly. Today she is remembered for being an example of the lost aspirations of many who go to Hollywood to become actors or actresses. Ironically, the day after her death, a letter arrived at her home, offering her the lead role in a stage play about a woman driven to suicide." ( bio by Kit & Morgan Benson) Tweet
