Although from different backgrounds they team up to solve a mystery.

It was a typical hot August day in Austin when our partnership first
began. I had been sleeping out back in my usual place during the late
afternoon, when a car came up the driveway. I could hear the pecans
cracking under the tires as the car approached and stopped under the
shade of a large live oak tree. It sounded like the car had been on a
long trip and now eased into it’s stalled state. I recognized the sound
of an Oldsmobile, perhaps four or five years old. The doors were
opening so I decided to see what was up.

Patricia and Raphael emerged from the back door of the small two bedroom
house. Raphael had built the two room addition on the back for me. It
wasn’t much, but it was better than the room I had at the animal
shelter. They were nice people, I would often go with Raphael on bike
rides around the city and walk with Patricia down to the park. They
didn’t seem to mind that I was a mixed breed , mostly Doberman and
Labrador. I think they were looking for something a bit smaller for
their son, but somehow I was the one that they came home with them.
That was six years ago and now their son is off to school and we have
kept each other company.

By now the people in the car had reached the back door. Bouncing around
at their feet was a small white bundle of fur. Before I could move
again this rambunctious puppy ran straight for me but was intercepted
by Patricia.

"So this is Matt, He’s so small and so cute!"

She held him for a moment and then set him down. A middle aged woman
knelt down next to Matt hugged him until he jumped away to reach me.

"Thank you so much .." was all she could say before returning to the
car and driving away.

"So your name is Matt?, where did you come from?"

"I’ve been in the car all day, so I can’t really say. I’m just glad to
get out. Other than a stop or two and they wouldn’t let me explore
anywhere along the way. We stopped at one point and I looked around the
field but there was nothing to find. I’ll tell you all about it later,
I’m ready to run."

"Wait, wait, wait ... what kind of dog are you and I don’t remember
seeing any like you before, but you are obviously in the terrier
family."

"I’m a pure bred West Highland White Terrier. They call us Westies for
short."

"You’re awful small for a dog."

"I’m only four months old and don’t worry I can take care of myself, I’m
not afraid of anything."

"Now, don’t take off, you need the learn the rules around here and the
number one rule you don’t go anywhere without a leash. Haven’t you
learned anything yet?"

"I make up my own rules. But I won’t cause any trouble."

I shook my head and looked back to Patricia and Raphael who were
watching from the driveway to see how we would get along. When I looked
up again, Matt disappeared around the back corner of the house.

Patricia quickly came to me with a concerned voice. "Where’s Matt?

I shrugged my shoulders and laid down in the shade. But before I could
get comfortable I felt a bump at the back of my head.

"There you are ... but what is that you’ve got? Look Raphael, Matt found
a collar. Is that the one that we lost."

"That’s not it. I don’t know whose it is. We’d better hold on to it and
ask around the neighbors."

By now Matt growled and charged ahead. I flicked him aside with my legs,
