Connor and Ernie nearly fell out of their seats as the sirens blared
and the ambulance sped to the hospital.

While en route to the hospital, Allison slowly began to regain
consciousness. Connor noticed she squeezed his hand. She attempted to
push the oxygen mask away. Connor smiled as he knew she was conscious
again. “Allie? Are you okay?” “Connor, what happened?” “You were in a
fire, sweetness. The apartment was on fire. But you're going to be just
fine.” Even though he didn't know this for sure, he wanted to reassure
her. “The baby!” “The baby's going to be fine too, Allie.” “What about
Ernie? What about Scarlet?” “Shh, Allison stop worrying. You should
really keep that mask on. They're fine they're here.” Ernie took
Allison's hand in his. “Allison, I'm okay. Don't worry.” She sought
comfort in Connor's touch, knowing that everything was going to be all
right. Suddenly, a sharp pain tore through her. She gritted her teeth
and squeezed Connor's hand hard. “Allie? What's wrong?” “It's the baby!
something's ... wrong!” with the last word, she lost consciousness.
“Allie? Allison?” he tapped her gently but she didn't respond. Within
seconds a paramedic was hooking up all sorts of devices to her. “What
are you doing?” “Your baby's in fetal distress.” “What's that mean?”
“It means that something's wrong.” “That's what Allie just said! Now
what's wrong?” “I'm not sure yet, sir. Just calm down.” “Calm down? You
want me to calm down? What if the smoke hurt the baby? What if Allison
is ...” “Mr. Cassidy, stop! You're not helping your wife. Just relax.”

Minutes later, they finally arrived at the hospital. Connor and Ernie
were escorted to the waiting room. While they were there, Connor called
Lynn and his parents. He hadn't seen Allie since the harrowing ride to
the hospital, and she hadn't regained consciousness. Thoughts of what
could be wrong raced through his mind. Ernie sat silently opposite
Connor. He knew that Connor secretly blamed him for what happened to
Allison. “Connor, I'm sorry I ...” “Shut up! Don't say anything!”
“Connor I'm trying to explain!” “Explain? Explain what? How you got my
wife into this mess?” “You were the one who wasn't home!” “Oh that's
right rub it in!” “I'm not rubbing anything in! you're just sorry you
weren't there to save her! I did the best I could, Connor. Did you
think I was going to let Allison burn to death?” “All I know is that
the fire didn't happen until you moved in with us! Why the hell did
Allie take you in?” “Maybe because she has compassion? Maybe because
she has a heart? Which is more than I can say for you!” “You're a
punk!” “No! I'm a kid down on his luck that Allison was trying to
help!” “No! you were using her!” “What for?” “I ... I don't know! All I
know is that I could lose both Allie and the baby! That scares me!”
Connor began to sob, Ernie saw a different side of him. He sat quietly
watching the grief on Connor's face. Lynn, Thelma and Clint arrived a
few minutes later. “What happened?” Lynn asked sobbing. Connor wiped
his eyes and began to tell the story. “I heard the call when I was in
the office. There was afire, Allie was asleep, Ernie tried to wake her.
She regained consciousness in the ambulance and told me something was
wrong with the baby. Then she passed out again. I haven't heard
anything since.” “Oh my God!” Lynn began to sob and then thought of
Scarlet. “Scarlet! Where's Scarlet?” “One of the ER docs took him to
the vet. He looks pretty awful.” “Oh, Connor Allison's going to be
beside herself.” “I know.” They all held each other and sobbed. Ernie
felt out of place, he felt like an outsider until Thelma noticed him.
“Who's this?” “Ernie.” Connor said flatly. “Nice to meet you, Ernie.
I'm Connor's mother Thelma.” Ernie timidly shook her hand and returned
to his seat.

Margery Ryan attended to Allison. She had inhaled a lot of smoke, and
they had an oxygen mask on her. When she woke up, doctors and nurses
were hovering over her. They were talking in low whispers as she opened
her eyes. Margery glanced at Allison and rushed over to her. “Allison?
Can you hear me? Do you know where you are?” “In the hospital.” “Do you
remember what happened?” she coughed and then attempted to speak. “No,
not much.” “You were in a fire.” “Oh my God! What about the baby?”
“Well, you started having contractions, but they seemed to be subsiding
now. They're called Brackston-Hicks. They're brought on by stress.”
“What do you do for that?” panic filled Allison's heart as she thought
of their baby.” “Well, we need to monitor you overnight. They've been
constant for the past hour. But they seem to be subsiding. You need to
cut the stress out of your life, Allison. I understand that a fire is
not something you can control, but you need to cut back on your hours
at the station.” “Okay, I'll do whatever I have to do. Do you know if
Connor and Ernie are all right?” “They're fine. They took Scarlet to
the vet.” “How is he?” “We don't know yet.” “Can I see Connor?” “Yes,
of course. As long as you stay in bed. You need to be on bed rest for a
few days after you get out of here.” “Okay, sure thing.” Margery left
and went to tell an anxious Connor the news. As soon as she appeared,
everyone had the same look of concern on their faces. “How is she?”
Connor asked shakily. “Well, she's having Brackston-Hicks contractions.
It's hard on her and the baby. They're brought on by stressful events.
We're going to monitor her overnight. I'm putting her on bed rest for a
few days.” “Okay, what can I do to help?” “Well, don't stress her out.
I told her that she's going to have to cut back on her hours at the
station.” “Okay.” “She's asking for you. She asked about Ernie too and
Scarlet.” “I'll call the vet.” Lynn said walking over to a pay phone.
Connor was escorted into see Allison. She was lying in bed with her
feet elevated. She smiled when she saw him. “Oh, Connor!” he kissed her
lightly and then sat beside her. “Allie, how are you?” “I'm better
now.” “Are you in much pain?” “No, not really. It's better now. I'm
worried about the baby.” “Don't worry, sweetness everything's going to
be fine. You said there was something wrong in the ambulance and then
you passed out. I was so worried, Allie.” “I'll be fine. Could you
check on Scarlet? Make sure that Ernie's okay?” A look of disgust
crossed Connor's face, he thought maybe she didn't notice but she did.
“What? What's that look for, Connor?” “I think Ernie's the reason the
fire happened.” “You don't know that! You can't go blaming him.” “Maybe
that's unfair of me. He did save your life. Do you remember anything?”
“I remember having dinner then ... going to bed. I guess I must've
fallen asleep, because the next thing I remember is a little bit of the
ride here and then waking up here.” “Well, I'm just glad you're all
right.” “I will be.” “I'll let you get some rest.” He kissed her
lightly. Just as he was about to leave her room, he heard his name.
“Connor?” “Yeah?” “Don't go. Would you sit with me for a while?”
“Sure.” He returned to his seat beside her bed and took her hand. “Do
you really think Ernie caused the fire?” “I don't know, Allie. My
mind's not up to processing that right now!” “Okay, just don't blame
him without any proof.” “I promise I won't. Margery says you have to be
on bed rest for a few days once you go home.” “Connor, we don't have a
home anymore.” She said sadly. “Well, we don't know that, sweetness.
I'll go back tomorrow and see how badly the fire damaged our
apartment.” “Oh, honey I can't believe it!” she began to sob as the
realization that they may have lost everything hit her. Connor did his
best to comfort her. He stroked her hair and held her hand. “Shh,
Allie, it's going to be all right. We have each other. We can rebuild
our lives.” He kissed her on the lips, she smiled and kissed him with
just as much fervor and passion. “But how?” the tears were cascading
down her cheeks now and he wished he could take her pain away. “We'll
get through this, Allison. I promise.” They were interrupted by a knock
at the door. “Sorry to bother you two, but I wanted to give you some
good news.” Thelma stood in the doorway, her green eyes gave her away.
Allison could tell she'd been crying. “Come in, Thelma.” Allison smiled
as Thelma approached her bed. “I know you need your rest, Allison, but
I just wanted to tell you that you and Connor are welcome to stay with
us. Until you get back on your feet again.” “No, we couldn't impose
like ...” “Allison, you're part of this family, we love you. Besides a
smoke filled apartment is no place for anyone, especially someone in
your delicate state.” Allison caught her drift and smiled. “We have an
extra bedroom, and we'll make sure you're comfortable.” “Thanks,
Thelma.” “You're welcome.” “Dr. Ryan's ordered that Allie be on bed
rest for the next few days.” Connor said worriedly. “It's just a
precaution. Besides, I can take care of you.” Thelma's warm smile
brought comfort to Allison. She smiled back. “Thank you.” “Any time.
Oh, I have news on Scarlet.” Allison's heart thudded as Thelma opened
her mouth to speak. “He's going to be just fine.” “Really?” “Yes, Lynn
phoned the vet and his vitals are normal. If all goes well, you can
take him home tomorrow.” “Thanks, Thelma!” “Any time.” Lynn and Clint
were allowed to have a brief visit with Allison. By the end, she was
tired. “Well, sweetness, I'm going to let you rest. You must be tired.”
“Yeah, what time is it?” Connor glanced at the clock it was around 4
AM. “Around 4 in the morning.” “Oh, you must be tired too. Can you make
sure that Ernie has a place to stay, my love?” he sighed, but knew he
couldn't refuse her. One look into her blue eyes and he was sold.
“Okay, if that's what you want.” “Thanks, Connor. I know you don't
agree with me taking him in but ...” he placed a finger to her lips to
silence her. “Let's not do this now, Allison. You need your rest okay?”
“Okay.” “I love you, Allie. I'll see you tomorrow.” “I love you,
Connor.” He kissed her gently, she returned his affection with a
passionate kiss of her own and watched him walk out of the room. Within
minutes, she was asleep.

Bryan Sutten dusted for prints and accelerant at the now infamous crime
scene. The Fallwood Apartment Complex was nearly destroyed. The few
remaining apartments that were left standing, were most likely
unsalvageable. He noticed that apartment 3A had the most accelerant on
it. He knew that was Allison and Connor's apartment. Why would someone
want to harm Allison or Connor? Millions of questions raced through his
mind as he dusted some more. He had to take breaks, the smell of the
caustic smoke filled his nostrils like a plague. He thought back to one
of Allison's reports, wasn't she working on the Batano case? Could the
fire have anything to do with Chadwick Batano? He'd have to find out
the answers in the morning. He was tired and it was nearing four A.M.
Bryan packed up his supplies and headed for his car.

Ernie laid wearily on Thelma and Clint's pull out sofa. Connor had
promised Allison that he would see to it that Ernie was taken care of.
Thelma knew that her son disliked Ernie intensely, but really didn't
know why. After checking on Connor and Ernie, Thelma turned out the
lights and went to bed. Clint was already asleep, so she climbed into
bed quietly. From binoculars, Slim watched the Cassidy household, he
would have to pick the perfect time to strike.

Bryan was ushered onto the fourth floor of Fallwood General Hospital. He
had to speak to Allison, and the sooner the better. If there was a
contract out on her life, he needed to know so he could provide her
with protection. He asked the nurse for directions to Allison's room.
“Let's see, Allison Cassidy,” the nurse said flipping through her
charts. “Room 405. Last door on your right. I do warn you, Detective
it's early.” Bryan smiled. “I know, thank you.” As he walked down the
hall he glanced at his watch, it was only 8-30, but this was an
important matter. He entered Allison's room quietly, she was asleep. He
hated to wake her, but he needed answers. He timidly stepped over to
the bed and shook her gently. “Mrs. Cassidy?” she stirred a little, but
didn't wake up. “Mrs. Cassidy?” he shook her harder this time. Allison
sleepily opened her eyes and looked at Bryan confused. She knew that he
had been the officer on duty when her car accident occurred. She
immediately thought the worst. “Is Connor all right?” she asked panic
in her voice. “He's fine.” “Are you sure? Because if you're here to
tell me ...” “Mrs. Cassidy, I'm not here about Connor. He's fine. I'm
Bryan Sutten I was on duty the night your car plunged into the lake.”
“Connor told me. Thank you for all your help.” “You're welcome, but I
really didn't do anything. Listen, I'm sorry to wake you so early in
the morning, but I need some information.” Bryan took a seat by her
bed. Allison rubbed her eyes sleepily and tried to focus on his
questions. “Now, Mrs. Cassidy I know you're working on the Chad Batano
investigation. We found traces of accelerant on your apartment
building.” “I'm not following you.” “The heaviest concentration was on
your apartment itself. Do you know of anyone who is trying to kill you,
Mrs. Cassidy?” “Uh ... call me Allison. I have no clue.” “Could it be
Chadwick Batano?” her heart pounded as her secret was about to be
exposed. “What do you mean?” “I mean you're horning in on his territory
as he sees it. You're ruffling his feathers, maybe he put a contract
out on you.” “Anything's possible with that man. You know how ruthless
he is.” “I certainly do, a very dear friend of mine was killed by the
hand of Mr. Batano. We could never prove it.” “I'm sorry.” She said,
Bryan gazed into her eyes and could see that she meant it. He reached
out and touched her hand. “It's all right, Allison. I'm going to post
an officer outside your door just in case something happens.” “Okay,
thanks, Bryan.” “You're welcome. Can you think of any other people that
would like to kill you?” “No, not that I know of.” “Well, I'll let you
rest now, Allison. Thanks for your help.” She watched him leave, as she
closed her eyes, visions of Connor filled her head. If he ever knew her
dark secret that linked her eternally with Chad Batano, she could kiss
her marriage goodbye.

He waited at Martha's coffee shop for several minutes. This had been
their clandestine location. Here, they could conduct their meetings in
secret, right under everyone's noses. He waited for his partner to show
up as he slid into a booth. He ordered a black coffee and eggs over
easy while he waited. Suddenly, he caught site of him, tall and
slender, well built. He was dressed in jeans and a long sleeved shirt.
He looked good for his age as he sat across from him. “Did you do it?”
“Sure did. Cassidy's finger prints are all over that accelerant can.”
“Great work! Do you think you can sneak it into the lab?” “Are you
nuts? Look at who you're dealing with here! You know what I want!”
“Yeah it's more of the same a cut of the action.” “How many bags have
you sold today?” “It's too early in the damn morning to ask me a
question like that, Honcho.” Honcho was his code name. The man who was
waiting for him was Red. The nickname Red fit him, he always wore red
shirts and red hats. “So, Red seen any hookers lately?” Honcho asked
while sipping the café latte he had just ordered. Red took a forkful of
his eggs and began to speak. “Yeah, got one on the corner last night!
Boy did we have fun! Lana's her name.” “Oo, Red I'll have to check that
out.” The small café began to fill up with customers, sensing that
their opportunity was lost, Red and Honcho exited Martha's.

Bryan reviewed the forensics report on the can of accelerant. It had
been found a few yards from the apartment complex. He had dusted it for
prints and now stared at the match. Connor came walking in to the
office. Bryan enraged, and seized by his temper socked Connor in the
jaw. “What the hell was that?” “What are you doing?” Bryan shouted.
“What the hell's wrong with you, Bryan?” “Are you trying to kill
Allison?” “Of course not! I love her!” “Huh!” “Tell me what's wrong!”
“This! that's what's wrong!” Bryan shoved the results of the latent
prints lifted off the can of accelerant in Connor's face. “No!” “Sorry,
buddy but they're yours! Now would you like to explain this to me?”
“Explain? Explain what? I wasn't there that night. I was here!” “Why
are you trying to kill your wife? Do you know how many men would give
their right arm to have a woman like Allison? I talked to her this
morning. She's beautiful, intelligent and has an awesome body which
never hurts!” Connor socked Bryan in the chest. “Stop! Allie's
pregnant!” “I know! What's the matter, Connor? Too hot in the kitchen
for you? Allison's a beautiful vibrant woman.” “I know that! I just
don't want you making eyes at her! What did she say?” “Well, I felt bad
I had to wake her up, but I needed answers to my questions.” “You
didn't tell her about my finger prints on the can?” “No, I thought I'd
leave that to you! I asked her about Chad Batano. She said it's
possible that he has a contract out on her. But she seemed tight lipped
about it.” “I swear, Bryan if you ever ...” “I won't tell her, not
yet!”

Allison was released from the hospital later that afternoon. She settled
in to Thelma and Clint's guest bedroom. It was roomy with a huge king
sized bed, blue and gray curtains, two huge dressers and an enormous
bathroom right off the bedroom. She had given Connor a list of things
to pick up from the apartment. Lynn had promised to go to the vet's and
get Scarlet. Thelma was in the kitchen, while Clint straightened up the
living room. Just then the doorbell rang. “Who is it?” Clint asked
opening the door just a crack. “I'm here to see Allison.” Chad said. He
was incognito, a dark wig, sunglasses and a hat completed the
disguise. “Who are you?” “John Saunders. I work with her down at the
station.” Clint let the man enter and went to get Allison. He knocked
lightly on the bedroom door. “Come in!” Allison called as she filled
drawers with the few clothes that didn't reek of smoke. “Hi, Allison.
Sorry to bother you, but there's a man out here to see you. John
Saunders.” She froze, knowing full well that was Chad's code name.
Clint had a sharp mind and Allison knew that Chad must be in disguise
for Clint not to recognize him. “Can you send him in? I don't want to
bother you and Thelma in the living room.” Clint went out and moments
later, Chad entered. He sat on the bed and smiled at her coldly. “Hi,
Allison. How are you feeling after your little ... mishap?” “Mishap?
Almost getting burnt to a crisp is your idea of a mishap? What the hell
do you want?” “Uh oh that can't be good for the baby! I just wanted to
let you know a little tidbit of information that slid through my
hands.” “You're a snake, more like it slid through your scales!” “I
loathe you!” he said evilly. “That goes double for me! Chad, what was
the purpose in coming here?” “To tell you that your stupid husband is
trying to kill you, Allison. Or are you that naive?” “What the hell are
you talking about?” “Oh, you mean you don't know?” “Know what?”
obviously she didn't, and he would take pleasure in telling her.
“Connor's prints were found on the can of accelerant used to start the
fire.” “He didn't do it!” “Yeah right! You just think about it! Just
remember the one you love is the one you least suspect!” with that,
Chad departed. Allison sat on the edge of the bed and pondered what
Chad had said. She knew deep down in her heart that it wasn't true, but
her mind raced. If Connor was responsible ... no she thought. He
couldn't be, he loves me. Lynn dropped by for a visit and Scarlet
squawked when he saw Allison. “He missed you!” Lynn said smiling at the
happy reunion. “I missed him too, Lynn! I thought he was dead!” she
petted his silky feathers as Scarlet put his beak under her nose. Lynn
knew something was troubling her and tried to pry it out of her. But
with Clint and Thelma just in earshot, Allison wasn't budging.
“Allison, what's wrong?” “Nothing.” “Don't lie to me, I know when
something's bothering you.” “Nothing, Lynn. I'm just ... tired. Bryan
Sutten came to visit me this morning. I'm tired that's all.” “No,
sweetheart it's something more than that.” “Lynn stop ...” “Your denial
speaks volumes. Allison, I won't tell another living soul, what's
troubling you?” “Okay, if you really want to know I'll tell you.” She
got up and whispered covertly in Lynn's ear. “Connor's prints were
found on the can of accelerant.” “No!” Lynn shrieked. Allison placed
her hand over Lynn's mouth to silence her. “Shh! What's worse, is that
Bryan's been asking about Chad.” “Oh, tell Connor the truth.” “No,
Lynn! He'd never understand!” “Allison, that was a long time ago.
Everyone makes mistakes. What happened in Atlantic City doesn't make
you a bad person.” She looked at Lynn skeptically. “Oh, come on! How
long are you going to let this thing eat at you?” “I should've gotten
justice, Lynn! I should've been brave enough to stand up there and ...”
“Allison, stop! You're making yourself upset over nothing. Margery said
you can't get stressed out. Besides it's water under the bridge now.”
“It haunts me, Lynn! Every night I see her face and I ...” “Allison,
stop, sweetie, you're going to torture yourself. I know it's hard, but
you need to forget her.” “No!” “Listen to me, you blocked it out once.
Remember after you and Chad came back from that trip? I had to pull
teeth to get it out of you and even then it came out in a dream.” “I
know but ...” “It was so traumatic that Mae Longstone had trouble
unlocking it from your memory. I thought you reconciled this, Allison.
Why now?” “Slim that's why.” “You don't think that he tried to run you
off the road do you? Are you still not getting sleep?” she nodded.
“Allison, listen to me, I'm sure you're right, but what drudged this
all up again?” “I just told you! Slim Hawkins! His eyes the way that
car was heading ... heading for me,” she stopped choked by a sob and
fear filled her eyes. She became dizzy and pushed herself into the
nearest chair. She went completely white and Lynn panicked. “Allison?”
but she didn't answer. She was in another world, remembering the night
Slim had run her off the road. “Allison?” Lynn went over and shook her
hard. “Earth to Allison! Where are you?” “Sorry.” “What's going on?” “I
just had a flashback of the night Slim plunged my car into the lake! It
reminded me of Atlantic City and ...” “Stop, I will not let you bring
that up again! It's not good for you. You're supposed to be on bed
rest. Let me help you into bed and you can forget all about this.”
Thelma listened huddled in the doorway. “I'll never forget!” “Allison,
just breathe and calm down. You're going to give yourself
Brackston-Hicks if you don't calm down.” She breathed deeply while
holding Lynn's hand. “We'll get through this, I promise you just have
to be calm.” Within five minutes Lynn had calmed her down and gotten
her into bed. She came out to tell Thelma. “Well, she's asleep,
Thelma.” “That's good, I'm sure she could use the rest.” “Yeah.” “Were
you two having a disagreement? I heard voices being raised.” “But out,
Thelma!” Clint called from the back porch. “No, we're fine.” “Okay, as
long as everything's fine between you two.” “Oh yeah, Allison's just a
little high strung that's all.” “She has every right to be, she just
lost her home.” “I know, I didn't mean anything by it. I love her like
a sister. If she needs anything will you call me?” “Of course, Lynn.
I'll take good care of her.” With that, Lynn left, Thelma knew there
was something more to Lynn and Allison's heated conversation than met
the eye. She padded down the hall and checked on Allison. She was
sleeping peacefully, so she quietly closed the door to the bedroom and
went back to her work.

Connor thought all day about telling Allison that his prints were found
on the can of accelerant. But she wouldn't believe that he tried to
kill her. He loved her more than life itself, who would place them
there? Who could place them there? The questions nagged at him all day.
He was glad to leave It all behind and walk into his parents' house.
The smell of homemade meatballs, pasta and sausage permeated the air.
Connor remembered his childhood as he set his briefcase down. He
watched his mother for a while before he greeted her. She looked so at
peace when she was cooking. It was one of her favorite pastimes. “Hi,
Mom.” “Hi, Connor. How was your day?” “Okay. How's Allie?” “Last I
checked she was asleep.” “I'll try to be quiet.” “Dinner's going to be
ready in a few minutes anyway. You might as well wake her.” “How's she
holding up, Mom?” “Well, she's still in shock, darling. You probably
are too, this must be so hard.” “It is, Mom. I'm still in shock.” “Was
anything salvageable?” “Some photos, some clothes and miraculously our
wedding rings!” “Well, that's good. I eavesdropped today.” “Oh Mom!”
Connor said exasperated. “No, listen to what I have to say. Lynn and
Allison were having a pretty heated argument this afternoon. Allison
became dizzy, she went white as a sheet. Lynn practically had to shake
her out of her stupor.” “Do you think it's the baby? Do you think
something's wrong?” “no, I think she's hiding something from you.”
“That's ridiculous!” “Well, I'd bring it up just the same.” Connor
pondered his mother's words as he went down the hall to their bedroom.
Allison was asleep, but when she heard the door close, she opened her
eyes. “Connor?” she mumbled turning over to look at him. “It's me,
Allie. How are you feeling?” he kissed her passionately, she returned
his affection with a steamy kiss of her own. “Better now that you're
here. I was tired. I think I drifted off to sleep. What time is it?”
“Around dinner time.” “Oh, I guess I was a lot more tired than I
thought.” “Bryan told me he was in to see you this morning.” “Yeah,
when I woke up he was standing there.” “At 8-30! No wonder you were
tired. You only got four hours sleep.” “He wanted answers, he was
really interested in my dealings with Chad.” “Yeah, he was telling me
his theory at work today. He thinks that Chad's put a contract out on
you. That's pretty serious!” “What do you want to do?” “I'm going to
have an officer follow you at all times. That way, no one can get near
you.” “That'll do wonders for my job!” “Allie!” “No, hear me out,
Connor. How can I interview people for this Grimson story with a police
officer hanging around?” Connor sighed exasperated. “This is going to
be a long night.” He muttered under his breath. “Maybe you could tell
him to keep his distance when you're interviewing.” “Okay, that's a
solution.” “You don't think that Chad's put a contract out on you do
you?” “No, this doesn't seem like Chad's style.” “What do you mean,
Allison?” Connor asked changing into his robe. “I mean, that if he
really wanted me dead, he wouldn't have just sent someone to torch the
building. But I don't think an armed officer would hurt. How was your
day?” “Okay, I guess. Bryan is driving me nuts with this Batano case.
He's relentless.”

“Well, that can be good.” “Yeah, but only till a point. Mom told me that
you and Lynn had a fight.” “Oh no ... nothing like that. We just
disagreed.” “About what?” “It's not important.” She said smiling at
him. She hoped that her smile would captivate him and put an end to his
questions. “You know you have to take care of yourself, Allie. You have
to be on bed rest for a few more days.” “I know, my love. I won't do
anything to hurt the baby don't worry.” “I'm not, you're going to be
the best mother! But I'm worried about you.” “I'll be fine, Connor. You
worry way too much.” “I worry about the ones I love. I can't think of
anyone I love more than you.” He said kissing her. She returned his
affection and he began to caress her neck. She moaned and moved closer
to him. “I love you, Allie. I think you're beautiful.” “I love you
too.” She said between passionate kisses. He delicately ran his hands
down her arms and delicately began to caress her breasts.

She opened his robe and gently began to massage his chest. He moaned her
name as she did this. She caressed every inch of him, and planted
kisses all over is body. Connor ran his fingers through her hair,
treasuring the scent of her shampoo. He took possession of her lips
again as the passion reached fever pitch. “Make love to me, Connor!”
she whispered breathlessly. “Are you sure, Allie? In my parents house?
In ...” “Shut up and kiss me!” she said gently cupping his face in her
hands. She brought his mouth to hers and he kissed her long and deep.
His tongue began to explore her mouth, which was paradise itself. Her
kiss tasted so sweet, full of longing and promise. Connor moved her
hair aside and kissed the nape of her neck. Then ever so gently, he
rolled her on top of him. He entered her as a wave of passion and
desire coursed through him.

Once their rhythm had slowed, they laid in each others arms. Allison
felt at peace for the first time in days, and she realized how complete
Connor made her feel. She snuggled against him as he told her how much
he loved her. Just then, there was a knock at the door. “Dinner's ready
I ...” Thelma stopped when she saw the scene before her. “Oh! I guess
you'll be a while.” “No, Thelma. We'll be right there.” Allison said
mortified. Once the door had closed, she started to laugh. “Oh, Connor!
I've never been so embarrassed.” “I told you it was a bad idea!” she
slapped him playfully. “Ouch!” he said feigning hurt. “Making love to
me was a bad idea? Do you regret the desire? The passion?” “I regret
that my Mom caught us in the act!” “Oh please! Remember the time Jack
caught us?” he laughed conjuring up the memory she was referring to.
“Yeah, I do. I could never regret making love to you, Allie. I love
you!” he said kissing her passionately. The fire of desire started in
her again, and Allison couldn't resist his lips. After they made love a
second time, they emerged from the bedroom. Clint and Thelma were at
the dining room table watching Jeopardy and quietly eating dinner.
Allison looked shy as she sat down beside Connor. “Hi, Allison. Did you
rest before?” Thelma inquired serving them both pasta, sausage and
meatballs. “I did. I really dozed off. Bryan Sutten came to see me at
8-30 this morning. So I only had four hours sleep.” “That would make
anyone tired.” Clint said smiling in Allison's direction. “Yeah, but
I'm better now. Thank you for letting us stay here.” “Nonsense,
Allison! Thelma and I are glad to help. I'm sorry your home burned
down.” “It's not your fault.” “Well, if there's anything I can do to
help, let me know.” She smiled at Clint. He was a genuine man, and
possessed some of the same qualities Connor did.

Two days later, Allison was anxious to get back to work. She had all the
rest she could stand. She was up early and left before Connor did. She
entered WFTR cheerfully as she greeted the other reporters and Doug. He
was pleased to see her and smiled warmly when she entered his office.
“Allison, this place hasn't been the same without you.” “Thanks, Doug.
I've missed you.” “How are you feeling?” “Much better.” “Do you and
Connor need a place to stay?” “No, thank you. We're staying with his
parents until we get back on our feet again.” “Oh, well if you need
more time off or ...” “Oh, Doug I'm ready to get back to work.” He
looked at her skeptically, but proceeded to update her on Ernie's case.
“Well, you should do a background check on Ross Grimson. Did you hear
he's running for governor?” “No, I've been out of the loop for a few
days I guess.” “Well, don't feel too bad, Allison. He just announced it
yesterday.” “Oh, I'll check it out.” Allison grabbed a quick breakfast
before setting off for Ross's office. Her cravings weren't starting to
get odd yet, but she knew it was only a matter of time. Bryan Sutten
accompanied her. She promised to pick him up at the station. “So, did
you hear about Ross?” he inquired as he slid into the passenger seat of
Allison's car. “What?” “He's running for governor.” “Yes, Doug just
told me.” “Can I get you anything, Allison?” “No, I'm fine thanks.”
“Okay, but if you need anything let me know. I can make myself scarce
when you interview Ross.” “Bryan, stop worrying.” She said smiling at
him. His blood raced and his heartbeat quickened. If Connor didn't
appreciate her, he sure did. “I just don't want to be in the way.”
Bryan said timidly. “You're not in the way. I'd like to thank you for
coming with me.” She stopped at a red light. “You're welcome.” She
looked so beautiful, her blue eyes were so brilliant and full of hope
and promise. He leaned over, and ever so gently kissed her. As she felt
his lips brush against hers, she instinctively pulled away. “No,
Allison, come here.” He said deepening the kiss. His tongue entered her
mouth, much to her dismay. Finally, the light turned green, and she
focused on driving. She hadn't said anything since, and Bryan was
worried. She got out of the car, and without a word dashed into the
Grimson and Firestone office building. Bryan followed in hot pursuit.
When he arrived, Allison was giving her name to the receptionist.
“Okay, Ms. Shure, have a seat. Mr. Grimson should be with you shortly.”
The cheerful woman behind the desk said. Allison sat silently on the
edge of a chair. Bryan couldn't help staring at her, she blushed as she
felt his eyes on her. A few minutes later, Allison was escorted into
Ross's office. Ross was a stout man, thick glasses, dark hair, that was
balding and green eyes. He smiled imperceptibly as Allison shook his
hand. “Hi, Mr. Grimson. Thank you for taking the time to meet with me.
I know you must be a very busy man. I'm Allison Shure.” “I know, Ms.
Shure. Get to the point.” “Okay, I just wanted to ask you a few
questions about Ernie's disappearance.” “What do you want to know?”
“When was the last time you saw him?” “Didn't Monica tell you this
already?” “Yes, but I'd like to hear it from you too.” “About a year
ago. They had a fight, but it was nothing major. Just a little spat.
Ernie never came home that night.” Tears began to fill Ross's eyes, and
Allison retrieved a tissue out of her purse. “Thank you, Ms. Shure.”
“So, the last time you saw Ernie was a year ago?” “Yes. I miss my boy.”
“I'm sure you do. Would Ernie have any reason to not want to come
home?” Allison thought it was a long shot, but she had to ask. She
leaned back remembering what Ernie had told her. He had specifically
instructed her to withhold the information of his whereabouts from
Monica and Ross. “Of course not! Why would you even ask something like
that? Ernie was brought up in a very loving home! He loved his mother
and me.” “Loved?” “What the hell are you getting at?” “Why talk about
him in the past tense?” “Uh ... just force of habit.” “Are you hiding
something? After all, I understand that you're running for governor.”
Ross slammed his fist on the desk exasperated. “What the fuck would I
have to hide? If you don't get out of here, I'll bodily throw you out!”
“Not the reaction of a father wanting to find his son!” Allison
retorted angrily. “Get out!” when she didn't move, Ross began to pull
her from the chair. She screamed in pain as he twisted her arm. “Let me
go!” “I'll do that when I'm good and ready!” she dug her nails into his
arm causing him to yelp. Bryan, who was waiting outside heard the
commotion and burst through the door. “Get your hands off her!” he
shouted waving his gun in Ross's face. “How dare you!” “How dare I
what? She was annoying!” “You don't ever lay hands on a pregnant woman
like that!” “Huh! Like I'm scared of you!” “Try under arrest!” Bryan
said. “What for?” “Assault and battery.” Ross stood stock still as
Bryan clamped the cuffs on him.

Once at the station, Ross's high powered attorney explained to a shaky
Allison that it was a misunderstanding. Bryan sat skeptically while
Baker Potter talked Ross out of this jam. “Well, I hope this won't
happen again.” Allison said gritting her teeth. “It won't, Ms. Shure. I
assure you. You're barred from entering Grimson and Firestone.” “What?”
Grimson and Firestone was one of the biggest law firms in the county.
“You heard me, barred!” she wanted to fight it, but she didn't have the
energy. She was tired, and her first day back to work had proved
harrowing. Bryan followed her as she left the conference room.
“Allison?” he walked along with her as she headed for her car. “What?”
she snapped, still angry about the kiss he had planted on her earlier.
“Are you okay?” “No, but I will be once I get home.” “Do you want me to
drive you?” “No, I'll be fine.” “Are you sure? Because if not ...”
“Stop hovering! I'm not incompetent! Just pregnant!” fire flashed in
her eyes and he had never seen her angry. His plan to win her wasn't
working. “Sorry, I didn't mean to get you so upset.” “Would you mind
telling me what that kiss at the red light was about?” “I ... I'm
sorry, Allison. It was just a reflex.” “A reflex? Do you always kiss
women at stop lights?” “What is that supposed to mean?” “How am I going
to tell Connor?” “He doesn't need to know about this!” “You just shared
a passionate kiss with his pregnant wife he has a right to know!”
“Allison I ...” but before he could say another word, she was in her
car. She pulled out of the parking lot at top speed glad to be away
from him. How was she going to tell Connor about the kiss?

Her nightly report on the Grimson case didn't go well either. She was so
rattled from Bryan's kiss, that she flubbed up on the air. Calling it
the Crimson case. After her segment aired, Allison had all to do to
keep her composure. Doug noticed her mistake and knew it was highly
unlike her. He called her into his office as she was about to leave.
“You look tired. I wont keep you, Allison.” “I am. It's been a long
day.” She said trying to stifle a yawn. “What happened out there?” “Uh
... I was just a little nervous that's all.” “About what? You're one of
our best. You could do those reports in your sleep. Now what's eating
at you?” “It's nothing, Doug. Listen I'm really sorry. It's just stress
and all.” “No, I have a feeling it's more. Is there anything you want
to tell me?” he took hold of her hand, she found comfort in his touch.
“No, I'm just tired that's all. It won't happen again.” As she left,
she burst into tears. Doug knew something was amiss, no matter how much
Allison tried to deny it.

The man code named Red stepped out of the shadows. He knew right where
his target was. He had already said too much, so he had to disappear
permanently. He heard a car drive up but thought nothing of it. As his
target was exiting Martha's coffee shop, he spotted him through the
barrel of his gun. He aimed and fired. The man fell and was killed
instantly. Knowing his work was done Red turned to go. But not before
writing down the license plate of the driver in the car that had
witnessed the gruesome murder. AC752004.

When Allison pulled into Thelma and Clint's driveway, she tried to
regain her composure. She felt light headed and thought maybe she
needed something to eat. As she climbed the steps to the front porch,
she realized that she had no recollection of the drive here. What was
happening to her? It must be pregnancy she thought, as she entered the
house. Clint was out with some friends, and Connor hadn't arrived home
yet. Thelma was busily preparing dinner. Allison smelled hamburgers as
she entered the kitchen. “Hi, Thelma. Can I help?” “Oh, Allison you're
home! No, dear just sit down. How was your first day back at work?”
“Exhausting. I'm so tired.” “Are you sure you want to keep working?”
Thelma inquired slicing some onions, tomatoes and lettuce for a salad.
“Oh, I haven't given it much thought. But not if every day is like
today.” She looked at Thelma then, and she noticed that Allison had
been crying. “Something upset you, sweetheart?” Thelma asked
nonchalantly. She truly liked Allison, and genuinely wanted to help. In
an odd way, Allison was like the daughter she'd never had. “Thelma, can
I tell you something?” “Sure, dear. What is it?” “You have to promise
not to tell anyone!” she said her voice beginning to crack as a sob
escaped her throat. “Of course, Allison. You know you can talk to me.
Now, what's troubling you?” “What do you do when another man ...” she
stopped cold, she felt a surge of dizziness and pitched forward. Thelma
noticed she stopped speaking and turned around to face her. “Allison?
Are you all right, sweetie?” she came to Allison's side within seconds.
“I'm fine. I just feel a little dizzy that's all.” Thelma poured her a
glass of iced tea and handed it to her. “Here, drink this. You look
flushed. Are you sure you're all right?” “I'm positive. I'm sorry,
Thelma. It's been a long day.” “Now, what were you about to tell me?”
“What do you do when another man ... makes a pass at you?” “What kind
of pass?” “Well, ... how about when he kisses you at a red light, and
explores your mouth.” “Explores your mouth? With what?” Thelma asked
shocked. “His tongue.” Allison said softly. “Oh, Allison you don't
think ...” “It's Bryan!” she blurted. “Bryan? Not Bryan Sutten?” “Yes.”
She said softly. “Well, my best advice is for you to tell Connor.”
“How? How am I going to tell him? When we're eating dinner? When we're
in bed? How?” “Calm down, Allison. Just tell him the truth. I know you
didn't make any advances towards Bryan.” “No, of course not! I'm in
love with Connor.” “Well, then you have nothing to fear.” Their
conversation was interrupted when Connor burst in like a hurricane
through the door. “Hi, Connor.” Allison called from the kitchen. “Hi,
Allie. How was your day?” he asked kissing her lightly. “Exhausting.
How was yours?” “Tiring too. May I ask you a question?” “What is it?”
she asked looking adoringly at Connor. “What the hell are you doing?”
“Excuse me?” “With Chad! We had a long talk at the station this
afternoon. He came to see me, Allison! He told me that you two used to
be involved.” “Connor,” Thelma said trying to keep him off the subject.
“So? Can I have an answer?” “Connor stop!” Thelma said. “I'm not
Barbara Walters, Connor! Who would you believe Chad or me? I told you
there's nothing going on!” “Allie don't lie to me! What the hell's
wrong with you? Every time I bring up his name you head me off! Or you
change the subject!” “I am not going to stand here and listen to this!”
Allison shakily got up and headed for the bedroom. Moments later, they
heard the door slam. “Nice work, son!” Thelma said sharply. “I want
answers, Mom! Allie's been avoiding this for days!” “Well, I can tell
you one thing, you're not going to get answers that way. Connor, she's
in a delicate condition, and you come in berating her! Give her a
chance to catch her breath! She had a hard day.” “What happened?” “Oh,
now you're concerned?” “Of course I am she's my wife!” “Connor, you
need to learn two things about marriage. One Allison is very special,
and you have to treat her respectfully, and two that marriage is a
compromise. Let her tell you in her own time. There may be something
about Chad that she doesn't want to tell you right now. But you can't
force it out of her.” “Well I'd like to!” “Oh and you have to learn one
more thing.” “What's that?” “Quit being an asshole!” “Huh?” he had
never heard his mother curse and was taken aback. “You just acted like
a horse's ass! Go apologize!” Thelma coached him for nearly an hour.
Connor got into his car and did as she had instructed.

He picked up flowers, candy and a card. Maybe he wasn't being fair, he
did rant at Allie, and he hadn't even given her a chance to tell her
side of the story. He returned home an hour later. Allison was lying in
bed thinking about the day's events. What was making Connor so erratic?
She had to tell him about Bryan's kiss, but not now. Not with the way
he was acting. She heard the bedroom door open. Instinctively, she knew
it was Connor and shut her eyes. She couldn't deal with his antics, not
now. He knew she was asleep, but he had to talk to her. He tiptoed over
to the bed and gently shook her. “Allie?” she remained perfectly still,
maybe he would go away. “Allie, wake up, sweetheart. I have to talk to
you.” He shook her harder and she knew he was relentless. “Oh! what?”
she said annoyed opening her eyes to look at him. “Listen, honey I'm
sorry. I acted like an ass, and I'm trying to apologize. I shouldn't
have gone off on you like that, Allison. I'm really sorry, sweetness. I
just had a rough day. Chad came to see me, he taunted me he told me
that you were keeping some sort of secret from me. I was thinking about
what you said earlier, and of course I believe you.” “You weren't
completely wrong, Connor. There is something between me and Chad, but
it's not what you think. But I want to ask you for a favor.” “What?” he
said eager to earn her forgiveness. “Just let me tell you in my own
time.” Exactly what Thelma had advised. “Okay, Allie. I'm really
sorry.” “It's okay. But just remember you're not a cop when you're with
me, I'm your wife. I don't want to be interrogated, I want to be spoken
to like a human being.” “I'm sorry, honey. I should've been more
understanding. So, how was your day?” “Well, for starters Ross Grimson
got me thrown out of his office today. When I went there to ask about
Ernie he nearly bodily threw me out. If it wasn't for Bryan I don't
know what I would've done.” “What did he do?” Connor inquired stroking
her hair. “He arrested him for assault and battery.” “Are you all
right? Ross didn't hurt you?” “No, I'm fine. But, Connor there's more.”
“Okay, I'm listening.” He kissed her on the lips and she returned his
affection with a passionate kiss of her own. “Bryan kissed me today. We
were driving to Ross's office, and there was a red light. He kissed me,
my love! I swear I didn't do anything ...” she began to sob, Connor
held her for a long time wrapping his arms around her. “It's all right,
Allie. Everything's going to be all right.” He kissed her again, she
kissed him back and her tears began to subside. “I'm sorry you had such
a rough day, Allie. What can I do to make it better?” “You could tell
me you love me.” “I love you, Allison.” He said kissing her long and
hard. Their lips interlocked creating a spark of passion.

He gently began to caress her breasts through her nightgown. She moaned
in pleasure as his hands encircled her breasts. Allison gently massaged
his chest, unbuttoning his shirt. As every button was undone, she
kissed the places they revealed. He whispered words of love to her as
he ran his fingers through her luxurious dark brown hair. “I love you,
sweetness!” he said as she kissed him long and hard. “I love you, my
love!” She kissed every inch of his body, letting her passion guide
her. They were like two souls that needed to be joined.

Connor kissed the nape of her neck, her weak spot before running his
hands down her arms and massaging them. He kissed her breasts again,
before massaging her neck and shoulders. She kissed Connor's chest and
then moved back to reclaim his lips. She stroked his hair, and brought
his mouth close to hers. As they were locked in a passionate kiss, he
entered her. At first, they started slow and pulsing, but then the
tempo picked up to a fast rhythm. When they were exhausted and spent of
energy, they laid in each others arms. Connor looked at her adoringly
and kissed her lightly. “Do you forgive me, Allison?” “I do, my love.
Make love to me again and I'll give you everything you want.” She said
wistfully rolling over to kiss him. “I already have everything I want,
I have you, Allie. I love you.” He kissed her long and deep. She
returned his affection letting his tongue explore her mouth. “I love
you too, my love.” She whispered, he watched as she laid beside him
completely content. Soon, they were both asleep.

Two weeks later, living with Clint and Thelma was proving difficult.
Connor had a plan to get them back on their feet, but he would have to
discuss it with Allison. He missed their alone time as a couple and had
to watch their every move in case one of his parents walked in. Connor
found a temporary solution to this problem and decided to take Allie
out to dinner. They hadn't had any alone time. Not with his parents
hovering. He missed having their own place. Connor decided on La
Luna's. He had told Allison he would pick her up at 7. He had made
reservations and wanted to be on time. Allison finished her day earlier
than usual and made it home in plenty of time to get ready for Connor.
After she had showered, and put on makeup, she brushed her hair,
experimenting with different styles. Originally, she had wanted to pull
it into a bun, but when she saw it in the mirror, she thought it looked
awful. Eventually, Allison gave up, letting it cascade down to her
shoulders. Connor arrived promptly at 7 and kissed her passionately as
she slid in beside him. “Hi, favorite reporter of mine! How was your
day, Allison?” “It was much better. At least I didn't get thrown out of
anyone's office today.” “Are you still working with Bryan?” “Yes.” She
said flatly. “How is that going?” “A little awkward, but it's
manageable. How was your day, sweetheart?” she asked taking his hand as
he steered the car on to Pallisades Road. “Pretty good, busy but good.
Charlie's relentless with this Grimson and Batano case. He's driving me
nuts, Allie. I told him I wasn't going to work tonight. He wanted me
too, but I told him that I was taking my gorgeous, beautiful wife out
for dinner.” “Awe! Aren't you sweet!” when they came to a red light,
she kissed him. Just as the light turned green, a car backfired.
Allison gripped the dashboard and turned pale. Connor was alarmed and
pulled over. “Allie? Are you all right?” “Connor, I need you to help
me!” she said frantically. “Okay, is it the baby? Are you having
Brackston-Hicks?” “No, nothing like that. Just pull over into a
secluded spot.” He did as she instructed, all the while keeping a close
eye on her. “Allison, don't pass out on me! Stay with me!” she was
trembling as Connor put the car in park. He felt her forehead, she felt
cool in spite of the fact that she was shaking violently. “Allison? Are
you sure you're all right?” “Connor, hold me!” he put his arm around
her and she snuggled closer. She took off her seatbelt so she could be
closer to him. He had never seen her like this, and was truly
concerned. “What's wrong, sweetness? You know you can tell me
anything.” “Oh, Connor it's just awful!” “Allie, whatever it is, we'll
get through it together. Come on, darling something's bothering you.”
“Connor, I ... I witnessed a murder!” she blurted, Connor held her as
she sobbed uncontrollably. The realization hit her as her mind flashed
back to that fateful night. She knew whose murder she had witnessed,
she just needed to tell him before she lost her nerve.
