4. Past Revisited He dreamt of her, replaying their last scene in his mind. He wished he could take back all the horrible things he said to her. He wanted this to be some awful dream, he wanted to wake up and find her sleeping peacefully in his arms. Connor felt himself being shaken awake. “Mr. Cassidy?” a nurse whispered. “Allie?” “No, I'm a nurse. My name's Patricia. How are you feeling this morning?” “Did they find Allison yet?” “No, sir. They're diving in the lake now.” “I have to go!” Connor said trying to get out of bed. “No, Mr. Cassidy, I can't let you leave. You had a serious case of hypothermia.” “I have to find my wife! My Allie! She's out there!” this is why they had sedated him, every time he was awake, he tried to get out of bed and search. “I'm sorry, Mr. Cassidy. I can't let you do that.” Thelma entered observing the scene before her. Her eyes filled with tears as she saw a shell of the son she once knew. “How is he?” she asked the nurse in a low tone. “Not good. He keeps asking about Allison.” “She's gone, sweetheart.” “No, Mom! It can't be! No! it has to be some sort of mistake! Allie wouldn't leave me!” “I know she wouldn't, sweetheart. But sometimes people do. It was a freak accident. It was horrible, but she would want you to go on with your life.” “No there is no life without her! Allie? Allison? Where are you?” Thelma sobbed as Clint entered. He put his arm around her and whispered softly to her. “Honey, it's going to be all right.” Drake watched anxiously as warm air was heated and Allison inhaled it. Even though she was still unconscious, this was the most affective way to warm her. He remembered all the courses he had taken on training for hypothermia. Allyxandra retrieved more IV's And warm blankets. She draped them over Allison as Drake delivered the warm air to her. “Come on, Allison. Wake up for me. Please, we have to get you home to your family. I'm sure you have lots of people who are searching for you.” Drake sat with her for half an hour. After what seemed like an eternity, she finally began to open her eyes. “Allison?” he said softly. She looked at him in confusion. “Where am I? Who are you?” “I'm Drake Hoaggan. You're at Seederside General Hospital. Do you remember what happened, Allison?” “I was in a car ... accident. I'm pregnant. Did I tell you that?” “No, you passed out before you got to tell us much. Do you know your name?” she looked at him strangely. “Allison Cassidy.” “That's right. When you were brought in you said something about Connor. Who's Connor?” “My husband. Could you call him for me, please?” “Sure, let me get the fetal monitor and check the baby.” “Dr. Hoaggan I'm so scared! What if the severe cold did damage? What if the baby's not breathing? What if ...” “Allison, calm down. Just relax, I'm going to make sure that you and your baby are just fine.” “Thank you, Dr. Hoaggan.” “Call me Drake.” He went to retrieve the necessary equipment to check the condition of Allison's baby. While he was gone, Allison reached for the phone. She could barely reach it, but managed to get ahold of the receiver. She numbly dialed her own number. The phone rang and rang. Why wasn't anyone picking up? Where was Connor? She hung up and dialed his cell. Thelma was trying to comfort Connor when his cell phone vibrated. She knew you weren't supposed to have them in hospitals, but had given the number to Charlie to be updated on the search for Allison. “Hello?” she said softly. “Thelma?” Allison said unsure if she had dialed the right number. “Yes? Who is this?” she thought it was Allison, but then thought her mind was playing tricks on her. “It's Allison.” “Allison?” “Yes, is something wrong with Connor? I called the house and no one's answering. What's going on?” “Uh ... we all thought you were dead, Allison.” Connor perked up when he heard her name. Allison was alive. “Is that Allie?” he asked nearly ripping the phone from Thelma's hand. “Allie? Is that really you?” his heart thudded, he was flooded with the feeling of warmth and love filled his eyes. He smiled broadly as he heard her soft melodic voice. “Connor? What's wrong?” “Nothing's wrong, Allie. What do you mean?” “You're in trouble. I can tell. Are you all right?” “Yeah, I'm fine. I'll be over to see you, sweetness. Where are you? Are you all right? Is the baby all right?” “I'm at Seederside General. Drake's checking the baby out now, and I'm ... fine.” She said lying. “Don't lie to me.” How did he know? “How do you know that?” she asked suspiciously. “By your voice. I love you, Allison! I'll be right over.” Connor pushed off and screamed for joy. “She's alive! Allie's alive!” Thelma and Clint rejoiced at the news and after having a psych evaluation, Connor was discharged. He arrived at Seederside half an hour later. Drake was on duty and came Click here to read the rest of this story (443 more lines)
