Samantha Jones In The Land That Time Forgot By Waldo Pepper Send all comments to ronk@axion.net Samantha Jones stood on the dock of rough logs and looked up the bank of the Amazon River for the small steamer that would take her and her friend Rebecca West back to civilization. the two young women had traveled up to the headwaiters of the Amazon to spend some time with an old friend Colonel Maxwell Sharp on his plantation. "There is still no sign of it Becky," she said walking back towards her friend. "We may never get out of this jungle." "These old river steamers are always late or breaking down," replied Rebecca. "I suppose we will have to enjoy the colonel's hospitality a little longer." As the two young woman made their way back towards the guest house Samantha noticed four of Colonel Sharp's field hands helping two people out of the jungle. Both women quickly made their way over to help and found that one was a female not much older then Samantha. The second was a short thin frail looking man with glasses who was now almost totally exhausted from the experience. "Please, does anyone here speak English," he gasped to the farm hand who was trying supported him. "We must see Colonel Sharp immediately." "Yes, we both do," replied Samantha. "What seems to be the problem?" "Oh thank God," said the woman coming to a halt. "It's my father and Lord Roxton, they have both become lost in that infernal jungle and you must help us to find them." A few minutes later Colonel Sharp appeared with a host of servants and instructions were given for the care of the new arrivals. They were to be taken into the house and given food and drink then escorted to the study for a debriefing. Both Samantha and Rebecca followed the group back inside and then accompanied Colonel Sharp to his study. "Exactly who are these two," said Samantha taking a seat? Much of this area is unexplored and I imagine they have fallen pray to some hostile tribe. I shall mount a rescue party to search for them and I would be honored if you and Miss West join us." Yes, most certainly," replied Samantha. "Becky and I would be happy to help in any way we can, but the name Challenger does sound familiar to me." "And indeed it should Sam," replied Rebecca. "I recall reading about him in all the local papers back in the States. I believe he is the head of the Boston Adventures Club." "Yes, you are quite right Miss Moore," said Colonel Sharp. "that is the only reason I allowed him to explore the Devil's Playground." As Colonel Sharp finished speaking the study door opened and both Miss Challenger and Professor Summerlee entered the room. They had both eaten, washed, and looked somewhat recovered from their ordeal. "Ah Miss Challenger," said Colonel Sharp. "I hope that you are feeling better and can now tell us exactly what has happened to your father and Lord Roxton." "I really don't know how to begin," she said taking a seat.
