A daisy is plucked from a meadow. Empires rise and fall. A house is built, children are reared, a marriage is broken. A legend is born. A box of saltines goes stale and has to be thrown out. | |||
It is a dark night in the Canyon of the Winds. A somnolent coyote sways sleepily, and then, tipping off the precipice it stands on, plunges into the yawning chasm. Its dire howl keens through the night and abruptly ends in a dull thud, and muffled crunch as the wretched cur is dashed against the stalwart rocks at the bottom of the great trench. Hours passed, our massive stone turned, the drowsy sun rose and fell many times, the coyote changed. Soon it came to pass that, at the beginning of the 27th time the sultry flaming orb rolled above this Canyon since the coyote had come to be there, grass began to sprout upon the coyote, placed as was the fur on the coyote's hide. Then the coyote stood, its body sheathed in a perfect viridescent cloak. It arched its back and two great leaves sprouted from therein, leaves so large as to become wings, and with that, the coyote that was dead rose into the air, howling balefully, as it soared away to chase the sun. As this heavenly beast soared into the air, the moon shone down upon three lemmings. Two of these lemmings were having an argument. One of the lemmings was a girl lemming, her name was Aurora. A beautiful creature, her fur shimmered in the moonlight. She watched the two male lemmings arguing over her, for Aurora was tangled up in a horrific love triangle with the two lemmings there, she didn't know who she wanted she only knew that she had brought about this confrontation. Her eyes watered with indecision as they darted to each of the strong male rodents locked in mortal combat, she knew one word from her would end this duel, she looked first to her old friend, Alflathar, she had always felt a strong bond to Alflathar, their families had had them promised to each other once she reached an age at which marriage was seemly (two weeks) but it had been delayed for one or another reason. Although she did feel strongly toward him, she couldn't help feel as though she was Alflathar's sister, in away... because she was his sister, but that didn't bother her up until two days ago when she met a strange foreigner, one that was not entirely lemming, his mother was an escaped hamster, his father was a lemming, and his name was Sprinkles. Aurora was entranced by Sprinkles, she could not stop watching him, his delicately crossed eyes, his teeth, the color of aged rosewood, they arched upward toward his throbbing Vermillion nostril ever so gently. But none of this mattered because they were all crushed by an errant coyote falling off a Canyon precipice Tweet
