Molly made her way across the yard. The wedding had been held on the
ranch she and Jake had inherited. That had been another sore spot with
Molly. She had thought that weddings should take place inside. Who
wants people messing up the yard with heels prints? Plus, when the wind
blew you could smell the horses. It goes without saying, that smell
wasn't pleasant for a wedding. Then, there was the heat. They got
married in June, in the south, for God's sake.

“There you are!” Jake cried to Molly. “Well, what did you think? And be
honest too.”

“It was definitely interesting, to say the least.” Molly smiled at Jake.
He took her hand in his.

“Thanks for being nice.” Jake laughs at Molly. “When you fall in love,
I'll remind you of all this.” Jake loops his arm around Molly's
shoulder. He turns to look at all the people. He was feeling very
blessed to have so many friends.

“Couldn't you have done this in the fall or the spring? It's hot out
here. I'm going to be a puddle soon!” Molly complained to Jake. She
watched all the people eating and drinking at hers and Jake's expense.
Oh Lord, she thought, this is costing us a fortune.

“Quit bitching Molly. Today is a day of celebration. Be happy for me
please.” Jake turns to look down at his sister. His forehead is
scrunched up with pain from the fights they've had about this wedding.
He wished for once that she would just look at it from his point of
view.

“Jake, I am happy for you. I just hope you know what you are doing. Did
she sign the papers? The lawyer has to have them back in the morning.
They have to be filed at the courthouse before Saturday.” Molly didn't
look at Jake. She had made him get a prenuptial agreement. She was just
trying to protect what was theirs. But, Jake hadn't liked the thought
of it.

“Yes, she signed them. Even though I told her she didn't have too. She
totally agrees with you about it. And she wanted to prove to you that
she wasn't marrying me for my money.” Jake said hotly.

Molly wouldn't look at him. She didn't want to see the look on his face.
She knew he was angry at her about the prenuptial agreement. They had
been down this road for six months. Molly knew she wasn't going to
change Jake's mind about the wedding. Besides, the deed was done
anyway. He had done it without her blessings.

“I'm just trying to protect you, Jake.” Molly told him with pain in her
voice. She hated fighting with him over anything. And her way of
thinking couldn't be changed. Not on something as important as the
ranch.

“You trying to protect me? Or you just trying to protect yourself?” Jake
asked his sister with anger in his voice. “That was a low blow, Jake.
Even from you.” Molly said with tears in her eyes.

“I know, Molly. I'm sorry. I know you have the best of intentions. And I
love you for it. But you don't have to take care of me anymore. I've
been grown up for awhile, if you haven't noticed. I can handle my own
affairs now. I don't need you to pick up the pieces anymore.” Jake
looks down at his sister.

Molly hangs her head in shame. She also feels the pain of him being
grown up. He's now married to top it off. He didn't need her anymore.
What was she going to do now? Jake and the ranch had been her life.

“You know what I was thinking standing up there?” Jake asked Molly
quietly.

“What did you think? The whole parish is thinking you have lost your
mind with the dog thing.” Molly looks at her brother. She would never
forgive him for that. But she was proud of him. He had stood his ground
over her. It was just one more thing that hurt in her heart too.

“I thought about Ma and Pop. I wondered if they would be proud of me. I
wondered if they would have liked what I've done with the ranch. I
wondered if they would have liked Shelia, most of all.” Jake looks at
her with a little boy lost look. His voice had even trembled.

“Oh, Jakie!” Molly turns towards her brother. She takes her much larger
brother into her arms. So proud, yet so vulnerable, that was her
brother. Molly thinks to herself.

“They would be so proud of you. You have the best and biggest horse
ranch in the whole state of Louisiana. People come from all over to get
one of your horses. Not to mention, the ones that come to get you to
train their horses.

“Why, it was just last week we had a king here. A KING, Jake! He came to
see about buying one of your horses, Jake. That's not something to
sneeze about, hon, you are amazing with horses. They are as much a part
of you as the air we breathe.

“As for Shelia,” Molly sighs. “They would have loved her just as much as
I do. Ma would say that she is the other half of you. She would say
that she completes you. That her beauty almost matches your own. That
her wit doesn't go unnoticed. That she will be able to handle you when
the going gets tough.” Molly smiles as she looks up at the sky.

“Don't start me with Poppy!” Molly laughs as she hugs her brother
harder. “He would have loved the dog stunt. But would have complained
that you didn't add the horses.” Molly smiles as she moves to look into
her brother's face.

“After, all they are what paid for this shindig.” Molly deepens her
voice to imitate her father. Molly looks into her brother's blue eyes.
She doesn't want him to dwell on the past. Not today of all days. He
needs to be happy.

“We thought about the horses.” Jake laughs as he hugs his sister to him.
He rests his chin on her head.

“But, I knew you would never got for that. I wanted to come up riding on
the back of my stallion.” Jake laughs as Molly hits him on the back.

“You won't have.” Molly gasps. She knew he was going to be all right if
he was teasing her.

“No, I wouldn't have done that too you, Sis.” Jake sighs.

“No more being sad, Jakie. This is a day to celebrate. Remember?” Molly
pulls back to look at her brother with pride. She straightens the draw
string tie he wore for today. She had pushed the metal part out of her
way so it wouldn't get catch in her hair.

“Now you're throwing my words back at me.” Jake laughs. He pushes
Molly's hands away from his cummerbund. He could only stand so much
fussing over him.

Molly looked back at all the guests. Her brother was important, she
realizes. All the most important people from the state were here.
Maybe, just maybe, one day her brother would see it too. The he could
put the past behind him.

“Molly!” Jake calls to draw her out of her thoughts. “What were you
thinking? You looked so far away.” Jake lets go of her to look around
him.

“That you need to get back to your wife and guests. Hooch and Daisy are
about to run her over up there. Don't let them mess up her dress. She
would hate that if they did.” Molly looks at her sister-in-law. She's
perfect for him, Molly thinks to herself. She does really complete him.
She's everything their mother was and then some. Maybe Jake had been
right all along. Molly wasn't about to tell him that though.

“Promise me that you wouldn't leave without staying good-bye. Just
because you moved to town doesn't mean that I don't think about you and
your safety.” Jake looks down at his sister. The day would be perfect
if she had someone to take care of. She needed someone who could take
care of her for a change. She had always been there for him since their
parents died. Now, he had a family of his own though. Who was going to
be there for Molly now? He knew he would always be there for her. But
it would be different now that she had moved away from home.

“I'm not going anywhere. I told you, I'm going to melt out here. Didn't
you know that fat people don't like being outside. It makes them
sweat.” Molly smiles up at Jake. She didn't promise though.

“Don't Molly.” Jake warned her with his eyes. “Don't belittle yourself
like that. You are beautiful, if only you would see that.”

“Go back to your wife, little brother. Don't argue with your elders.”
Molly says as she pushes him away. She had to get him away from her.
She knew she was close to losing it. And she was bound and determined
not to do it in front of him.

“I love you, Mol.” Jake kisses the air as he walks away.

“I love you too, Jakie. Be happy okay!” Molly said with tears in her
eyes. She could feel them coming. She had to get away from here. She
watches him walk away from her for the final time. She wasn't the most
important thing in his life anymore. She hadn't been in a long time.
But now it was final. He was grown and married. She had lost her baby
again. She had to get somewhere private before she started crying in
front of everyone.

Molly waved once more to Jake. He made his way over to Shelia's side.
Molly knew that she could slip away now. He would be distracted the
rest of the day. She wasn't going to embarrass him by crying at his
wedding. Even though she didn't know most of the people here. They were
important to Jake. And she wasn't going to do anything to make them
change their minds about him. Molly knew no one would miss her anyways.
There was no one here for her.
