Just something I came up with one night

They say we are free

But what do they mean?

Free to be who we want

Free to go where we please

And do as we like?

~

How can we be who we want to be

When people always want us to be something else

"You can do better than that"

"Why would you ever want to be like that?"

They say this, and yet we're told we can be anything we want.

~

Are we really free to go where we want?

We can't enter another country without paperwork

We can't step foot on private property

Can we wander in and see the manager of the company?

Do people mind when you walk into their houses?

~

As for doing what we like,

When was the last time you were able to sit with your feet on the desk?

The last time you were able to say "stuff it" and not go to work

The last time the bills arrived and you decided not to pay

The last time you were allowed to run amok in the streets without a care
in the world

~

They call it "freedom" but it's really only a limited freedom.

We can be free as long as it's within the constraints of the rules to
that freedom

Total freedom would equate to complete chaos.

And thus there is need for constraints.

But why call it "freedom" when it's not really complete?
