Despair (standard:poetry, 221 words)

A poem I wrote last year...Features unpleasentries of emotion. I wrote it while my grades were down, and my first attempt at courting failed miserably. (Or despairingly...take your pick.)

Despair, loneliness, failure and missing parts,

How you contribute to a broken heart.

You eat away confidence and pride,

Leaving me filled with cynicysm and snide.

You forget to take away memories of accomplishment and happiness,

Leaving memories of how things once were, but now shapless.

You feed on my longings and hope and visions of pride,

Growing stronger and more vicious, making gaps in my life wide.

You shield me from optimism and from the phrase "OK",

Only admitting a longing for "The Good Old Days."

I want to admit defeat;

I've tried twice before.

In finality, that solution is Complete,

But it's not an option I may again explore.

They say that I'm extremely smart,

But I can't defeat you,

For you don't allow the determination to reach my heart.

Defeat you, defeat you,

It's what I must do,

But you've gaurds against any means of persuasion,

Leaving me forlorn, too.

What I cannot say, I cannot do,

And I feel worse and worse, while I'm enslaved to you.

Occassionally, you disappear, leaving me with happiness,

And a new sort of cheer,

But then you return,

Wearing a leer.

You refuse to leave me alone,

And my mind, I cannot hone.

I can never be certain that I am safe,

Simply knowing you could easily show your ugly face.
