symbolic poem

the hunters

by Jack Straw

.

Heath chews on the stem of grass

time is told by the leaves

violet smoke drifts up

from burl by his feet

.

vacant eyed -- perhaps a fool

as many assume

his mind flows like a clear stream

without concern

.

Hap too is somewhere else

he drifts with clouds

over calm seas

and the gentle flight of birds

.

hanging from its hind legs

a buck

completes nature's witless trio

eyes so dark it's like coming night
