The motor of the small power boat sputtered and missed in the heavy
swell as Samantha Jones struggled to keep the craft on course in the
open sea. She steered the small boat directly into a strong north wind
and was failing to make much headway.

"The weather is getting worse Sam," said Rebecca Clark over the noise of
the storm. "We should have turned back."

"I know Becky," replied the now frightened young woman. "Look at those
charts once more and see is there is anywhere I can park this bucket
of bolts."

"There should be lots of small islands in this area," she replied.
"Many of them are not even on this chart."

As the small boat labored on Rebecca quickly moved to the bow and peered
through the wind and spray for any sight of land. Sudd enly she
saw it a brief flash of green and brown and then it was gone. she
strained her eyes and there it was again just off the starboard side a
small island, somewhere were they could seek shelter from this
terrible storm.

"There is a small island just off the starboard side Sam," she cried!
"Try and steer for it."

"I see it now Becky, good work," replied Samantha pulling hard on the
tiller. "With a little luck I will have us safe within the hour."

Samantha steered the boat closer to the island and found a sandy beach
were she could land. The motor continued to sputter and miss as she
headed for the shore and as the bow came to rest on the sandy bottom it
died completely.

"Well we made it," said Rebecca looking over the beach and surrounding
underbrush. "but exactly were are we?"

"We will worry about that later Becky," said Samantha. "I am sure that
there is someone about. But first we must get this floating relic
properly beached so that I can look at the engine."

An hour later Samantha closed the engine cover of the small boat and
wiped her hands. She had completely checked over the motor and could
not find anything seriously wrong. The sun was beginning to set and
the north wind that had blown so furiously had died down giving every
indication of good weather to come.

"I think we got a little sea water into the engine compartment during
that storm," she said moving to were Rebecca was sitting. "The sun
should be able to dry it out nicely and then we can be on our way."

"Good," said Rebecca getting to her feet. "There is something about
this place that scares me and the sooner we get out of here the
better."

"Now Becky you are just a little tired," replied Samantha. "This trip
to Jamaica has been hard on the both of us. Now lets see if anyone
lives here and would be willing to put us up for the night."

"Yes, I suppose that you are right Sam," she replied. "I did notice a
path off to the right there. It may lead somewhere."

The pathway led up a stony hillside that ended quite abruptly on a
large grassy knoll. You the left lay an old wood and stone mansion that
was built around the turn of the century. Smoke curled from one of its
chimmnys and a couple of servants could be seen preforming their daily
tasks.

"We could possibly stay there," said Samantha looking over the building.
"But I wonder who would choose to live on such a deserted island?"

"That is exactly what I was thinking Sam," replied Rebecca. "I only hope
