Shiver - Pt. Four Freya G. Being ironic, Shari chose the dresses nearly alike for her and Claire. They were made of the same fabric, broken white satin, soft to the touch. The differences would be on the length of the dress, the size of the hand bouquet, and the veil. Were they in a separate party, people would think Claire was also a bride instead of a bride's maid. Claire sighed when she saw the dress. It fitted her perfectly when put on. She looked in the mirror and trying to cast away the thoughts of how bride-like she was. ‘Look at you. You're so pretty. It could've been you, you know' Mrs. Perchant said without realizing the effect of the words. Claire quickly took off the dress. ‘I'm parched. I'm going to go get something. You want anything, mother?' she put the dress back on the hanger. ‘I have made the appointment with the hairdresser and the make up artist this afternoon. Yes, dear. I'll have some tea. You want anything, Shari?' Claire stared at her sister, who had been watching her all the while. ‘No. I'm fine' Shari smiled. ‘Ok. Be right back' Claire left the room. Outside she took several deep breaths and calming herself down. Her hands were shaking as she made the tea. She didn't know if she would make it on the wedding. Her parents looked so happy and proud. Her sister looked ever so happy. She had to be strong. She had decided so. Chris had been calling Shari for several times when she was in the same room with her. She would made excuses to leave the room, and twice she managed to pretend that she was really deaf. It's getting harder by the count of hours to pretend that there was nothing wrong when her inside was falling apart. The phone rang. In Reflex, Claire answered it. ‘Hello' A long pause before ‘Claire?' Claire quickly hung up the phone in panic. No mistake, it was Chris. She knew his voice very well. Claire had never answered the phone since she got home. She was afraid it might be Chris calling Shari. She stared at the phone with horror. When it rang again she nearly jumped. Her heart was thumping furiously inside her chest. After three times the ringing stopped. Her mother must've answered it in the other room. Claire grabbed her coat and her mother car keys and went out. A few seconds after that Mrs. Perchant went to the kitchen. ‘Claire? That's odd. She was just here making tea for us. Oh never mind. Maybe she had to go to the bathroom. Here, I'll just let you talk to Shari' she walked back to Shari's room. The first thing Chris did when he arrived home was to visit his wife-to-be. What he actually wanted to do was to see Claire. ‘My sister went out very early this morning. Visiting old friends' Shari said to him when he asked where Claire was. ‘Old friends?' the name Dan Ferris somehow floated in his memory. ‘Yes. I think she brought along her mobile phone, if you want to call her' Shari tempted him. Click here to read the rest of this story (208 more lines)
