A young girl learns about something other then the big city, about love, and gets her first kiss. | |||
It was the summer of '82, the drive was a long one but scenic most of the way. The lakes were endless, cabins lining each one along the way, the winding roads plenty. An abundance of fresh trees amidst the rocky hills. I wondered how pretty it must look in the autumn months. New roads were being built along the way, in the middle of the parks and I wondered how things might look a couple years from now. I was almost there now, rather we were almost there. My parents and I that is. They were dropping me off at my Aunt's house for the summer. She owned a small cottage along side one of the more quaint lakes. They thought it would be good for me to get out of the city for a couple months. Told me I could learn a lot while I was away. I wasn't so sure about that, but I didn't have much say in the matter. I couldn't see what I could learn from no TV, and having to pick my own fruits and vegetables. Aunt Mary believed that TV was a distraction from the finer things in life. She had a small radio, but it was difficult to pick up the FM stations depending on the weather. Just a few more minutes and we'd be there. We were just passing the small variety store. A small looking fish hut. It was a 15 minute walk from the cabin, and carried only the bare necessities, and a little extra. Milk, bread, eggs, some chips and candy. Anything else and you had to drive an hour to the nearest grocery store. Shopping trips Mom said were usually made every week or two depending on the host of fresh vegetables from the garden. Aunt Mary was in the garden when we got there, her small poodle barking and wagging her tail as we pulled into the driveway. We went inside, and had some dinner. The drive up had been long, so Mom and Dad had decided to stay the night before heading off early the next morning. When I awoke, my parents had already left, Aunt Mary made pancakes so we sat together and ate breakfast. I wasn't usually one for eating in the morning, but the thought was nice and it was my first day here, I thought it better not to be rude. She had asked me if I had any plans for the summer while with her. I couldn't imagine what she meant. There was no shopping malls, no movie theatres, not even any other teens around my age. She assured me that there was plenty to do, that I might want to take some canoe lessons from one of the nearby lakes, or take up a hobby like fishing. There was a dock in the back of the house that was perfect for swimming off of. And if I helped around the house, in the garden and the yard that she would be more then happy to offer me an allowance. My parents had also said they would send spending money every couple weeks. "Don't spend it all in one place" was their warning. What a joke, did they really see this place, I wondered. A week had past, I was beginning to go stir crazy from being in the house all the time, I wondered if the rest of the summer would be like this, it had to get better, didn't it. I decided to take the small hike through the dust covered road to the store with the allowance that my aunt had given me. I took Misty, the poodle with me. I thought that I could find a magazine at least, to help past the time at the dock. The choices were few from plenty, but I found a Rolling Stone. As I reached for it, the cute guy standing next to me had beat me to it. Just my luck. He asked me if I wanted it, I said no, but he insisted and reached for a Maxim instead. I thanked him and headed for the cash. Outside as I unleased Misty, Corey as I later learned his name noticed the poodle and asked if that was Mrs. Donnely's dog. It was I said, and introduced myself as her niece, Sarah. He told me, he usually walked Misty a couple times a week during the summer cause Aunt Mary's arthritis was too much some days. We talked for a little bit, but I informed him shortly after that I should be getting home in time for dinner. A couple days had past, and lunch time came, Corey had come to the door. I was shocked to see him again. Thinking that he was there for Misty, I told him that I would get her leash. He had asked me if I wanted to go for a walk with him, Aunt Mary had nearly pushed me out of the house. She said that it would be good for me to get out. I was a little unsure about this Corey fella, even if he was cute and generous, but I thought my aunt was right, and besides, what better things did I have to do. We went through the nearby forest area, Misty stopped Click here to read the rest of this story (92 more lines)
