I Owe You Shakespeare J. Thalia On the first day of 8th grade, David can't wait to go to drama class. David Nosllen has always wanted to be an actor. This year, he is especially glad to be in a Shakespearean comedy and wishes he'll is going to be the comedic relief in “As You Like It”. The main reason why David likes being in the school plays is because of Flora Nerso. She never was in the drama class, but she loved seeing their performances. David always wanted it to be that she loved to see his performance, but that most likely was not the case. Ever since 6th grade, David has liked Flora. First, he tried to impress her by giving her chocolate--her favorite food. Then, he tried to impress her through sports. None worked. He's absolutely sure that the fourth try would be the pushover. Then David realizes one small hitch. Mark Raskim! Flora's boyfriend! At first, David thought Flora never liked him because of his dirty blonde hair, not exactly straight teeth and his freckles. But he decided that wasn't it when one day, out of the blue, she said how handsome he was. “Hello, my name is Ms. Lopez. I have taken the pleasure of deciding the characters in this year's play, ‘As You Like It'.” Ms. Lopez starts reading names off her list. “Touchstone will be played by David Nosllen.” “Yes! I heard that Touchstone is the funniest character in the whole play!” David says to his best friend, Gomez. “Audrey will be played by Eva O'Henry,” Ms. Lopez continues. “Ooh!” Gomez proclaims. “What? What are you ‘oohing' at?” David yells. “Eva O'Henry is Audrey—Touchstone's wife!” Gomez taunts. “Ooh Eva O'Henry! Only the least popular girl in school! And you have to marry her!” “Children, children, please! Let's practice act 5 scene 3, starting from line one!” Ms. Lopez interrupts. “Uh David, let's start with you anytime you're ready.” “Tomorrow is the joyful day Audrey, tomorrow we will be married,” David drags Eva on stage. “I am excited, but what was wrong with the last priest?” Eva reads plainly off her script. “No! No! No!” Ms. López interrupts. “David, start from the beginning! Eva! Say the line like you are the bride and you are actually excited! Uh, you two go outside in the hall and practice there. I expect it to be perfect when you come back. Sam and Jill, practice act one scene one.” David and Eva go outside to start practicing. “Audrey, the vicar of the next village will wed us tomorrow,” David reads. Eva pauses. “David, I'm sorry, but I have known you for a long time, and I think that I've fallen in love with you,” Eva says with a frustrated look on her face. Silence. David can't believe his ears. Quickly, he thinks about how to tell her he doesn't like her. “Uh Eva, I like you and everything but-” David explains. “You hate me, don't you? You hate me just like everyone else! I thought Click here to read the rest of this story (163 more lines)
