A letter to my Son on his 20th Birthday | |||
Dear Son Today I watched you sleep in my tattered old chair..You were cuddled against the worn old arm.. I can't help but remember watching you grow up. Your boyish innocence came through with a pang in my heart. Without realizing it,I started to remember those days of your youth. I remember the first time you laughed out loud. You were laying on my lap and so small that your head rested on my knees while your feet barely touched my belt.I had just came home from work and playing the little peek a boo game you liked so much. You were laying there cooing and smiling like the angel you were.. I finally got you so tickled that you laughed out loud. I was so happy and proud of that I Laughed loudly with joy. It startled you so bad you didn't laugh again for two weeks. When you were a colicky six month old,I would get up with you and try to take away the pain. I would carry you from room to room,it was the only way you could get any rest.. I Would never have thought those early days could mean anything to you,but when you were five and you and your mother had a car accident, you showed me that my love had gotten through. As I walked into the emergency room my heart fell to the floor when I saw you sitting on the chair with blood on your face and the look of concern for your mother laying next to you. You looked up at me in despair, stood up,and stuck both arms up in the air without saying a word. I picked you up and started carrying you around the room. At forty pounds you still need me like you did at eight pounds. Getting home from work in the afternoon tired and sweaty,I would collapse in the chair with a tall glass of ice water. You would give me a minute to get "comperful" then you would come running and jump in my lap so you could help me drink my water. This was a daily ritual with us as was the wrestling you did with me all over the living room floor. Time is strange I blink my eyes twice and you are a year old sitting in a highchair eating your first Birthday Cake. All our friends are here to help us celebrate your first year of life. My Love is a year older and it is hard to believe how it has grown. I never believed I could care so much for anyone in my life, but you were proveing to me then how little I really knew about love and life. I turn around again and you are two. We are having a nice picnic in the park. We had bought footlong hot dogs so we could play while we ate. You and I went over to the ball diamond to run a few laps,as you were running the bases you fell down on the loose dirt. I glanced to make sure you were okay and the smile on your face made it apparent that you were,so we started running again. Again you fell down into a cloud of dust and this time the smile on your face made it obvious you were playing in the dirt just like all little boys are supposed to do. After 15 minutes of playing we decided to leave and I looked at how covered with dust you were and I was wondering if you had had a good time. When I saw the smile on your face,I had no doubts, for even your teeth were covered with dust from laughing and falling down. I blink again and you are three. You're helping me in the garage and you know your way around. The Falcon that is already your car is needing new paint so you are helping me sand it in the sun. As you work at my side you have more paint on you than there is on the car. I look down at you with Love in my heart and see the beautiful smile covering your face with a glow of innocence shinning through the blue paint. Your eyes are sparkling because you know you did a good job. I look at you again and you are four. You are so grown up and ready for christmas morning you can't sleep Christmas Eve. I try to convince you Santa will never come if you are still awake. The lights of the tree and the gaily wraped presents have you so excited I wonder if you will ever sleep again. After what seems like hours with you in my lap you finally fall asleep. When you woke Christmas morning I was sitting in my chair as you walked through the door. The smile on your face turned to wonder and joy when you saw that Santa had indeed come while you were asleep and had left you your very own bike, just like you had always wanted. You rode it around the tree as you opened the remaining packages. When you were barely five we built your first snowman in the backyard just the way you wanted him-carrot nose.stick arms and one of daddy's old hats to keep his head warm. I was half way froze to death,or so I thought, until I looked down and saw that smile, red nose, and frosty cheecks. I was warm with pride i didn't even need a jacket. Today you turned twenty. My little boy has become a young man. I would like to stop time so I can catch up with you. You have taught me so much about love, life, trust and caring. The tears in my eyes are from the real joy and pride I feel from you being my son. You could never do anything to make me not love you. God understands what I really feel. He gave me an angel to care for and I will always be thankful. I will Love you always Your Dad Tweet
