Even in the most idyllic of places, awkwardness can still exist. | |||
At first he thought it was raining. The drops landed on his cheeks, his forehead, his closed eyelids. After the first few, he opened his eyes to see her staring off into space, her cheeks glistening. From this angle, laying with his head in her lap, he couldn't see where she was looking. He moved slightly, just the tiniest bit, but it was enough to startle her. Immediately she dropped her gaze to his face and, spotting her tears there, moved her hand to brush them away. He smiled, hesitantly. Her voice was barely above a whisper as she murmured, “I love you so much.” Though she told him so every day, sometimes more than a dozen times, still his heart leapt at the words. He reached up with his right hand and wiped the tears from her cheeks. “Why are you crying, love?” he asked her quietly. “Perhaps I'm just happy,” she said, her fingers stroking through his hair. “Ok,” he nodded, the pad of his thumb brushing her lips. She leant down slowly and gently kissed him on the mouth. He tasted the salt of her tears. The sun moved from behind a cloud to bathe them both in liquid light. He resumed his half-doze, and she resumed her study of the young couple at the wings, laughing as they pushed a baby back and forth, back and forth, between them. Tweet
