A descriptive story about a young girl and a young boy in a mist covered woods at dawn. | |||
The sun seemed to turn her face a glow, the deep tan proof of her natural preference to the outdoors. Her knees and arms scraped from climbing trees. Each scrape seemed to tell a story of a certain tree, each one special. Though the scrape on her elbow was special, it was from her tree. Her hair was tangled, full of the leaves of the tree, most from the tree top. When she first saw this tree her eyes sparkled and danced, as they only do when she is thinking. A gentle breeze moved the limbs on the tree, and herself, each seemingly longing for each other. Her eyes still dancing around the tree, now guiding her arms for the lowest branch. Her short but strong legs throwing her up, allowing her rough hands to clasp the growth. With rapid small steps she had walked herself up to the branch, her dark hair cascading down like silk. Soon she was sitting proud and tall, straddled on the branch, her smile knowing this was only the first one of the tree. She reached for an other branch, and an other, until there were few branches left above. Each new branch contained more growth then the last. Finally she reaching the last branch she dare climb. She scrapped herself, just a small scrape, but the blood was still red. Reaching her hands out calmly she plucked a leaf off the tree, kissed it and held it to her wound, stopping the bleeding. When it had stopped completely she allowed the leaf to fall, and her eyes danced around the tree, her tree. It was then she spotted him, her head peaking out from the canopy of leaves and branches. Crossing across the meadow of the camp, frosted and crunching under his feet. The cold was just to the point where you could tolerate it, and even the deer were out, hidden in the shadows nibbling at the foliage peaking out from under the blanket of cold. She waved her red hand at him, but he did not see, he was on his way to his place, to his own special spot. Heading down the path into the mist, just beyond her tree, he walked down into a large clearing, with what appeared to be the frame of a building, and a bridge just beyond it, while in the opposite direction lead a path that followed along a creek. He turned with out even looking, heading past a water storage tank, and traveled along the creek. She now looked down at him, wondering where he was going, and looked off towards him as he faded into the woods, quietly and with out any energy that she would have. He looked almost like a puppy, retreating back to the protection of its mother. His hands shoved into his jeans. She gentle, but quickly started to lower herself from the branches, attempting to catch up, and when she reached the mouth of the trail, she jogged down towards the clearing, turning and following him, but he was no where to be seen. He had traveled farther, past a couple of curves, and the cool air caused his cheeks to turn red, and his fingers became numb. He shoved them deeper into his pockets reaching for the warmth within them. As he came upon a tree that had falled across the banks of the creek, he crawled out onto it and dangled his legs over the edge, looking down into the trickling water, singing along with the occasional bird. Behind him on the trail she followed his footsteps, her eyes dancing, looking for him. She went on, and continued past the curve, now leaning over the banks to see if he had slipped down to play in the creek. Her face and heart dropped as he was still not found. She never really liked the game of Hidden n’ Go Seek, to lonely for her, and she had to be on the move all the time, couldn’t sit still. Often causing her to be found, much to her relief. The mist now was fading rapidly as the morning grew late. Breakfast would be soon, and the bell would ring, her friends would be gathering in line to turn the huge handle. She decided to play his game herself, and jumped down into the ravine, standing on the edge of the creeks banks, ornamented by rocks, and trimmed with moss. She threw off her shoes and left them next to where she stood. Then she sat down on a rock next to them and slid off her socks, tucking them into her shoes, and rolled up her pant legs, stepping into the water. The water was ice and she was sure if she walked far enough, she would discover a giant ice cube its source. Her legs started to numb, but she was going on, now holding her pant legs up. When she first spotted the log, she didn’t see him, and kept on approaching it, watching the sides of the banks, instead of her feet which were slipping on the rocks in the water. Walking under the log, she noticed the underside of the log was damp with moisture, and the grooves of the bark seemed to create long canals for it to travel through, before dripping down on top of her. She smiled, her thin lips spreading, she knew where her friend was, and she was going to surprise him. She hopped out from under the log and he fell off, falling right on top of her, creating a large spash where she smiled and laughed as he struggled up the creek’s banks. Tweet
