Child Bride of the Night (standard:poetry, 363 words)
Author: SareAdded: Oct 11 2001Views/Reads: 3499/2310Story vote: 0.00 (0 votes)
A young girl grapples with her existence as a "lady of the night"...

The girl stood in her city,

looked at trees and parks and roads,

Where little children played in innocence,

and oblivion vied with depravity

for the streets’ top exports.

***********************************

She wondered why she stayed here,

but where else could she go?

She knew no other lifestyle,

foresaw no future for herself.

Though barely out of babyhood,

her illusions were long since lost.

***********************************

She lifted high her chin as she

fought hard against a sudden urge

to run, to hide, to leave

this dreadful city,

and never, ever come back.

***********************************

But salvation was fast approaching,

in the form of her new friend.

He sauntered down the sidewalk,

drawing nearer with each step.

Vaguely she reflected that he had

changed since yesterday ---

if it wasn’t for those hungry eyes,

she mightn’t recognize him at all;

one mind in many bodies.

***********************************

When he arrived, she knew,

they would go together,

to some place far away.

She’d go with him and watch him drink

-- he’d forget another day.

He’d vow he’d love her forevermore,

and mutely she’d agree.

But long before the sun rose

she’d be lost amid the fog.
