The Love between mother and daughter | |||
Mahogany Mist The strongest women I know is a sweet coco brown color. She is about 5'5 very gentle and kind woman, with the strength of ten mighty African warriors. Her name is Shawna Arease McClain. When Shawna walks her hips swing like a blues singer in a 1936 jazz club. When I was about seven I, climbed out of my over sized bed and took heart-pounding steps towards her room. As I peered into her doorway I could see her sitting upright. The moonlight shined on her night sky hair that hung over her right shoulder. "Shawna," I let out a soft whisper. My body stiffens as she raised her head and looked at me. "Yea, Co-butt," her Louisiana accent is filled with such pride when she speaks. "Do you think I'm ugly?" I lowered my head in the fear that she might just say yes. She opened her arms and motioned me to her. My feet felt like heavy bricks as I dragged them slowly across the newly waxed floor. I climbed her feather filled queen-size bed and sat next to her. " What would make you think a thing like that?" her voice filled with such worry. "Well because, my teeth are crooked," I mumbled. She took her smooth brown hand and placed it gently across my mahogany face. " I got crooked teeth and girl, you know that I look good. And since you look like me girl you know that you look twice as good." She rolled her eyes and snapped her fingers and let out a mother's laugh. As she paused, she gazed deeply into my chestnut-colored eyes with her hazel eyes. I could see the tears that she was holding back from the question her seven year old had asked her. "Do you know who you are child?" The question puzzled me. I looked at her with wondering eyes before I answered, thinkin to myself. "Is this a trick question?" "Yea, I'm Co-butt," this was the name that I was used to being called. "No you are not," her words rolled out of her mouth like thunder rolled off a mountain range. "You are Tacorra Roshawn Danielle Anderson. And the name Tacorra came from a princess in Africa who was a very beautiful and wise." Now it belongs to an American princess who is also very beautiful and wise. My eyes lit up like a Zulu warrior returning home from a great battle that I had just won. I wanted to her to see the pride and happiness in my eyes. There was a long pause as we looked at each other. "Now go on and get 'yo' self to bed. You gotta get up early in the morning." Her accent rich and deep made it hard to understand at first. " Night momma" "Night Tacorra" Her eyes looked so peaceful and calm like the roaring sea after storm. I could see all the joy of great queens in her eyes. I climbed out of her bed and started to glide to the door. Holding my head up high, I turned back to say goodnight again. When I looked back she was wearing of purple peacock feathers trimmed in gold. The wall, once plain and white now is straw like the huts in Africa. Her nightgown was now a baby blue robe trimmed in bright in enchanting sliver. The room became silent and I could hear the sounds of African drums while the ceremonial dancers whirled back and forth on the dusty ground. Giving praise to their enchanting queen. "E-Baya, E-baya" the mothers of the tribe called out, their faces painted with colors of the rainbow, the tribal marks of diamonds next to their eyes. Suddenly like a hurricane hits the walls of a house the dancers drop to their knees. While the beats of the drum get lower and lower. Cries of respect began to fill the air from the elders to the small children. I looked puzzled confused wondering why this beautiful ceremony so came to a halt. In the night sky, out of the great African jungle, I saw her, Shawna, a strong African queen, my mom. I watched in awe as they all bowed one after another to her feet. At that moment I realized that she is the queen of all queens, a strong black woman with great strength and a kind heart, with the wisdom of many elders that have come before her. "Tacorra Roshawn Danielle, get 'yo self off to bed!" I awoke from my daze and look at her. " She is truly beautiful woman," I thought to myself. I ran at her full speed and placed a kiss on her cheek. That night when I was seven I realized that I was a child being raised by a strong beautiful strong black woman, that when I need it, I will always have her strength to depend on it in my time of need.
