Not a very strong self-esteem level there, Henry! LOL

No really, it's just something I already can sense. And it's a little
disturbing, quite honestly. I don't like to lose control you know. I
told you I'm a control freak! : )

A Question

Hi, I just wondered if you have ever had phone sex with anyone. I have
a few times, with my ex when he was out of town, and it was great!

To: Cindy

An Answer

Well, I hate to admit it but, yes I have. A few times, with a
professional.

Re: Phone Play

Well, would you care to try it with an amateur?

To: Cindy

5/27/01

Oh my God yes! Here's my number, call anytime. 244-9788. I'll be the
one with the Kleenex!

Cindy called him a few days later. They talked for two hours, at the
end of the conversation they both had a very warm, moving, loving time
together, even though they were miles apart.

To: Henry

5/31/01

Wow. That was incredible. I've never had it be so great for me.

To: Cindy

5/31/01

Yeah, me too. I think it's about time we meet face to face.

To: Henry

5/31/01

Me too. Here's my number at work, call me and we'll talk.

Henry called her the next morning. They talked for nearly an hour, and
arranged to meet for lunch a few days later.

Cindy sat in a restaurant the next Friday at lunch. She was waiting for
Henry, but she was a couple of minutes early. She decided to order a
glass of wine. After all, it was making her nervous just thinking
about meeting this person, who had gotten such a hold on her interior
life, yet she had never even seen him in person. The waiter brought
the wine, she sipped it quietly.

A few minutes later, a man in a wheelchair rolled up to her and said
"Cindy?"

"Yes."

"It's Henry."

She was flabbergasted. Then angry. Why hadn't he told her? She tried
to be polite, but could tell her disappointment must be showing. She
had a quick lunch with him, and then said she had to get back to work,
and didn't contact him again.

To: Cindy

6/7/01

Why haven't you written or called? Is it because I'm in a wheelchair?

To: Henry

6/9/01

Why didn't you tell me?

To: Cindy

6/9/01

Because I knew you would give me the brush-off, just like you are doing
right now.

To: Cindy

6/10/01

You know Cindy, I can't help it if I got hit by a drunk driver when I
was a senior in high school. My spinal cord was injured from the
accident. I might be in a wheelchair and my legs don't work well, but
everything else does. My brain, my heart, and, especially, my feelings.
Maybe even more than most men's. Being forced to deal with this on a
daily basis makes you much more conscious of all the crap that we think
is important really isn't. What's really important is how we treat
each other.

Look, I'm not asking for you to forgive me. Just to understand why I
would not tell a woman with whom I have made one of the most meaningful
connections with in my life that I'm in a wheelchair. I've tried being
up front and honest from the start, and usually get nowhere fast. So I
admit I was a cad, dishonest even, but please understand why.

To: Cindy

6/11/01

After all, the only difference is you can see the challenges we would
face. There are always challenges to connecting with someone; we have
the advantage because they are right in front of us.

To: Henry

6/16/01

O.K. I understand. But we have to have one rule here, O.K.? No more
deception. I want the truth about everything. Even if it hurts.

TO: Cindy

6/17/01

O.K., you got it. Can I call you tomorrow?

To: Henry

6/18/01

Sure.

Henry waited 4 days to call. He was nervous. What if she couldn't deal
with him this way? What would he do then?

In the meantime, Cindy was growing more and more anxious about why he
didn't call her. When she finally picked up the phone and he was on
the other line, she was so happy she almost giggled.

"Well, how have you been?" Henry asked.

"Good. Busy." She paused. "I've missed you," she said.

"I missed you too. Do you want to get together?"

"Yeah, that would be great."

They had dinner a few days later. He talked about work, and his
friends, and his cat Jeffrey, and then they had a very frank discussion
of the implications of spinal cord injury on a relationship. He told
her that while it can be difficult, intimacy is much more than just the
mechanics, and when the heart is willing, there is no limitation on
what two people who care about each other can share. He gave her some
web sites to look up, and suggested she just think about it for a few
days. If she feels she could have a relationship with him, great, if
not, he would be upset, broken-hearted even, but he would understand.

A week later, she called him at work and said she would try.

They went out for another month, and found they were becoming very
close, writing and calling often, having fun and getting to know each
other very well. Henry said he would let her decide about their
physical relationship, but said he has had a few other relationships
with women and most of them worked out just fine. In fact, most of
them had told him he was one of the most sensitive lovers they'd ever
had.

A few weeks after that Cindy told him she was ready to spend the night.

They began by having a nice long bubble bath together. They sipped
some wine, listened to some soft music, and it was great. She got to
know Jeffrey his cat, and he showed her a tour around his loft. She
was so happy just being near him, and even thought she might be falling
for him. When they went to bed, he said quietly, "Just hold me."

Slowly, he kissed her, using his hands and mouth, and his warmth and
caring were wonderful.

They had a terrific time together, that night and for the rest of the
summer. He told her soon afterwards he loved her, and she said, "Me
too."

They had a lot of hurdles to get over, her family, who were initially
dead set against their relationship, and even his family gave them some
trouble.

But soon Henry charmed everyone as he had her.
