About the beginning and end of it all.

As I went downstairs, again the unforgiving eyes followed my every
movement. I could feel them on me like the sights being raised for the
final kill. I walked ever so slowly to the faucet and turned it on
with the nimbleness and grace of an ogre, I knew it was my father, my
flesh, my blood, yet I was disconnected. This black veil of shadows
hung between us entreating my curiosity and fear.

“Pa, what are you doing?” I asked while avoiding those dark eyes.

“Nothing, I’m just sitting.” He replied with a calmness unlike his own.

I went for the light switch and flicked it on, fearing some horrible
visage would be staring at me, with mutilated flesh and bone. Yet when
I turned on the light I simply saw my father sitting there, calmly
staring into the soul of nothingness.

“What are you doing?” I questioned him with a new and unfound
impatience.

“Just thinking.” The movement of his lips were unreadable, only the
sounds traveled across the room like some unseen bullet.

“About what?” I asked as my curiosity began to grow. Suddenly father had
a clarity in his eyes that was truly frightening. “I wasted time, and
now doth time waste me. Shakespeare.” I had never known father as a
learned man, and was surprised by what had been said. What did it all
mean, I was scared for I knew something was not right, the air was
amiss around me, time and space had stopped if only for an instant. I
turned off the light, father began to mumble, slowly his quotes from
Shakespeare began to take shape, then he was quoting Aristotle, then
talking in some long forgotten tongue. I was under the spell of fear
and wonder, I had no idea of what was happening to the simple immigrant
who had help to rear me up.

My father’s voice grew into a booming shout, yet no one awoke. Only I
seemed to hear his rants and raves, judgement had been decided. I
looked to the clock, it had stopped, everything had been stopped by my
fathers voice. A silence followed that was so strong, and thick that
it could suffocate even the strongest man. His head turned slightly to
the left and his eyes met mine. I could not turn away for I knew if I
did, it wouldn’t make a difference. Father’s face was once again
filled with tranquility, no smile, no frown, just peace. His lips
began to form words:

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth
was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and
the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. Creation.” I looked up
and all fell away.
