PART 3 - CH 2

TWO

Inside the Safety Cabin they began to notice a change in the movements
of the Ship, as if it was bobbing around freely instead of travelling
slowly forwards. They waited a while. The Falcon continued to bob
gently. There was no announcement from the Computer and nothing from
Muslik.

“Do you think we're out of the Corridor?” Sarah asked, glancing over at
Kane.

He shrugged and tried to contact Muslik a couple of times but the
inter-com remained dead.

“If the inter-com's out then the Computer could be out too,” she said.

“Yeah,” agreed Kane, “but Muslik doesn't need anything to contact us,
does he?”

“Maybe he's busy,” she suggested. “Give him another few minutes.”

“One minute,” Kane stated. “I'll try to contact him by thought and if he
doesn't respond I'm going along to the Bridge.”

He sat back in his seat, closed his eyes and concentrated. Muslik was a
two-way telepath so he should be able to hear him in his head.

The Ship continued to bob around gently but the Computer and Muslik
remained silent.

“Nothing,” said Kane, opening his eyes. He unlocked his seat and stood
up. “I'm going to the Bridge,” he told them. “We can't hang around here
forever.”

“I'll come with you,” said Sarah, unlocking herself and standing up.

“Me too!” Blaze added quickly, not wanting to be left alone.

Kane looked thoughtfully at them. “It would probably be a lot safer if
you two waited here,” he stated.

Sarah slipped an arm round Blaze. “We'll come, won't we,” she said,
smiling at him.

Blaze nodded enthusiastically.

Kane strolled over to the main console. “Turning off the force-field
round the Safety Cabin,” he told them and pressed a button. He picked
up a laser pistol and set it at ‘stun'. “Opening Cabin door,” he
announced. He pressed another button on the console and the reinforced
steel door slid silently open.

The Safety Cabin had been fitted with its own independent power supply
and was still well lit. The light from the Cabin splashed brightly into
the passageway outside but petered out after a few yards into total
blackness.

Blaze strolled over to the doorway and peered out. He saw the thick
darkness ahead, felt the oppressive silence and quickly came back in.

“Kinda dark out there,” he muttered.

Kane walked over and looked out. “Kinda quiet too,” he said.

“Maybe I should wait here in case Muslik tries to contact us,” Blaze
suggested.

Kane grinned at him. “Coward,” he said.

“Coward!” agreed Blaze, grinning back.

“I'm coming with you,” Sarah decided. “Two lasers are better than one,”
she said, picking up a pistol.

“Okay,” agreed Kane. “Lock the Cabin door after we're gone,” he told
