A firewall on computer protects it from viruses. A firewall around emotions protects human wellbeing. How to built a firewall around emotions?

Firewall

Subba Rao

“I have been trying to build a firewall for so long and yet it

is unavailing,” Juggernaut looked sad.

“Install a program that does it,” Roy looked at Juggernaut as

if why it was a big problem.

“The firewall was not for my computer.”

“Then firewall around what?”

“Firewall around my emotions.”

“What, firewall around your emotions?”

“Yes, I have been building a firewall around my emotions for so

long and yet when I face unforeseen real life situations, the entire

firewall collapses as if it never existed. I read the works of Buddha,

Ramana Maharshi and Aurobindo repeatedly and even summarized it in few

essays I have written and yet I fail to implement their philosophy of

detachment to mitigate emotional problems.”

“Well, maybe you never built firewall strong enough to get

detached.”

“What you mean?”

“Your so called firewall is like sand castle or deck of cards

as they say that were built during periods of calm and quickly crumble

when faced with real life situations.”

“You sound right, may be all that inner strength during the

calm periods is not doing any good in times of need.”

“In times of need, people seek spiritual help through their

faith; the Hindus flock to temples to worship various gods and conduct

rituals to seek inner strength. Instead you dig deep into your own soul

for inner strength to rationalize and it was not working.”

“Yes, I know it was not working but still I want to pursue the

path of self introspection for strength and detachment.”

“You could but you cannot build a firewall in a vacuum.”

“What you mean?”

“Whenever you face a real-time problem whether it was resolved

or not, the experience from it would earn you a brick to build the so

called firewall. As you face real life situations and meet the

challenges with inner strength, you keep earning bricks to build what

you call the firewall around your emotions,” concluded Roy.

“It may take a long time to earn enough bricks to build a

firewall; I may be dead before finish building it,” Juggernaut looked

helpless.

“Well but at least you die as a wise person not a stupid old man.”

“Thanks Roy, I always feel good to get things off my chest by

talking to you,” Juggernaut hugged Roy.

“Well, you are only person I know that listens to a donkey,”

Roy walked away towards the lush cane grass growing on the black lava

rock.
