“Gracious God, please give Wagner the strength to find food tonight.
Please help him find a home if he needs one, and help him to overcome
his difficulties that he faces right now,” I said loudly and
emotionally over the sound of the conductor asking riders to re-board
the train.

“He needs you now, God. Guide him, O' Lord, and give him strength. In
Jesus name, Amen.”

And after a simple thank you, Wagner left to continue his search for
some money and I was back on the train as the doors closed right behind
me.

It occurred to me only after we left the Fresno station that I would
never know who Wagner was or what his story might be. Nor will I ever
know if Wagner really did find some money to buy food on that cold and
rainy night. But I did learn one thing; when we least expect it, God
has a way of taking us out of our comfort zone and into situations as
we find ourselves doing things we never thought we could do. For me,
it meant that I can overcome my shyness and pray with strangers. But
more importantly, it means that even our most simple prayers with
strangers means so much more to others than we can ever possibly
imagine. And it especially means so much more than how much spare
change we might have in our pockets on any given night.
