Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story It was one of those moments of pure happiness that dissipates as soon as you acknowledge it. As soon as you can consciously grasp this feeling it is promptly flushed out of your brain and sprayed out of your ear holes onto your new paisley wallpaper. It makes you wonder if you were really happy in the first place or if your mind tricked you into that euphoric state of ignorance. William always had trouble with that word: happy. She walks out of the revolving door of the lobby towards the waiting bus. William begins to turn but reasons it would be polite for him to make sure she gets on safely. And that was it. That was their relationship for the past year. They are exulted for the one-week out of every three months they see each other, then one of them leaves and both of them want to jump off a cliff É at least temporarily. Everything you know is only temporary. Back in the room, the phone rings and William picks it up. It is a woman's voice coming out of the receiver. She asks William if he wants her to come over. He replies with something unimportant and hangs up the phone. No matter what he would have said, William persuades himself, she would still be walking through the revolving doors of the lobby and be knocking on Room 207 in twenty minutes. William sits on a chair smoking a cigarette, carefully flicking his ash into a cracked ceramic ashtray. By a mix of cigarette smoke and some other strange force his face crinkles, making only the green and yellow of his irises visible, he runs his hands through his stringy, greasy hair and stares glossy eyed at the blank ceiling of his apartment. It is repulsive. Tweet
