“Sure, but I only have ten bucks.”

“We can go to McDonalds or something, then.”

“Sure.” I didn't think going to a crowded restaurant was a good idea,
especially since someone may or may not be after the five of us, but I
didn't want to hurt his feelings.

“Okay, it's just this way, just follow-”

“Sarah, are you ready to go?!' I heard Aaron call to me. I looked over
and saw him in front of the grocery store.

“Oh, that's my brother, I gotta go, sorry.”

“It's okay.”

“Here, I'll give you my number.” I pulled a piece of paper out of my
pocket and wrote down my cell phone's number.

“Thanks.”

“No problem. See ya.” I walked over to Aaron, and we went over to the
shop Jake and Clif were in. we got them out in four minutes, which is
impressive time. Then the four of us walked back to camp. And so ends
one of the most exciting days of my life.

“Who was that kid?” Aaron asked me as we walked into the clearing.

“Oh, I met him after I got Kate her game.”

“Hey, what game did you get me, anyway?” she asked, walking up to us.

“Here.” I handed her the Mario game.

“Thanks. You can keep the rest of the money.” She told me, and then
walked away.

“Sure.” That reminded me that I never got the hat.

“Why were you talking to him?” Aaron asked me, pulling me back into the
conversation.

“I didn't want to hurt his feelings, and he seemed like he wanted to
open up to me.”

“Yeah, about what?” he asked, an edge in his voice.

“I'm not sure, you showed up too soon.” I suddenly felt my phone buzz in
my pocket. “Let's just talk about it later.”

“Sure.”

I walked over to a fallen log and checked my phone. It was a text
message.

Sarah? I didn't recognize the number; it wasn't any of the others.

Who is this?

Andrew.

Oh, sorry I 4got I gave u my #.

That's ok.

I felt like u were going 2 tell me something b4 I left. Were u?

Yeah. When I told u that u were different than the other girls around
here, I didn't only mean ur personality.

My eyes bulged out of my head when I read the message. What do u mean?

I also meant that u were physically different.

Now my guard was up. What do u mean, physically different?

Ur teeth. My hand instinctively shot up to my mouth, touching my canine
teeth.

I forgot about them.

Why were u so calm about it, then?

I'm like you. When I read that last message, my heart was beating so
fast, I thought it would pop out of my chest.

Is that why u were messing with ur hoodie?

Yeah, I thought about taking it off to show u, but I was afraid that
other people would see.

Show me what?

My wings.

I suddenly gave an involuntary gasp, causing Jake to give me a funny
look.

Ur whats?!

My wings. Ur the first person I ever told, no one else knows.

I need to see u. what's ur address? I ran out of the clearing, telling
Aaron that I was going back to town, which was only partially true.

Andrew met me in front of the game store.

“Where are we going?” I asked him.

“To my house, come on.”

We walked together through a few back woods as he led me to his house.

“So, are there any other special things about you? Or is it just your
teeth?”

“No, I also have a tail and furry ears under my hat.” I told him. He
gave me a disbelieving look. “I'm not kidding. Oh, and retractable
claws.” I held up my hand and let my claws spring out of my fingertips.

“Is there anything else?” he asked me.

I looked around to make sure no one else was around, and then let a thin
stream of fire out of my hand, then making it twirl around my fingers.

“I can't do anything like that!” he said, amazement filling his face.

“You probably have some kind of ability; you just haven't found it yet.”
I told him encouragingly.

“Here's my house. Come on inside.” We walked in and I sat in a chair in
his living room. ”My parents aren't home, so you can take off your hat
and relax.” He said when he saw me look around nervously. “I'll be
right back.

I wondered why he said that I could show my ears and tail because his
parents weren't home. I realized that he must have never told his
parents about his wings. But how could he keep that a secret? Over the
years, his parents would have to find out.

I heard a noise from the stairs and suddenly looked up. I saw that
Andrew had changed into a t-shirt and shorts, allowing me to see his
wings. He walked back into the living room and I saw that his wingspan
was about 10 feet wide and the same shade of brown as his hair. He also
had feathers lining the outer edges of his lower arms and legs.

“They help me steer.” He suddenly spoke up when he saw me looking at
them.

“So you've actually flown?”

“Only twice.”

“How have you kept this a secret? Do your parents know?”

“No, you're the only one. It happened three months ago. Two months and
three weeks, to be exact.”

“What do you mean? What happened?”

“One morning, I woke up and had wings.”

“How did that happen?”

“No clue. I fell asleep, normal old Andrew, but when I wake up, I'm
feathery.”

My mind flashed back to Clif's memory, and the sheet of paper.

Delayed reaction.

Flight

“Sarah?”

“Huh? Oh, sorry, I was just thinking.”

“About what?”

“It's nothing.” I kept thinking about the possible connection between
Andrew and the place Clif was taken to. I realized that I was staring
at a smoke detector. I noticed that there was a black circle on it
almost in the center.

It moved.

I grabbed Andrew's wrist suddenly and pulled him to the door.

“Hey! What are you doing?!”

“Shut up and run!” we bolted out the front door and sprinted down the
street.

We had gotten to the main street when I had an idea.

“Get up in the air!”

“What?”

“Fly!” he flew up about twenty feet into the air and did a 360.

“What exactly am I looki-” he started to say, but stopped. I saw one of
his wings twitch.

He suddenly fell toward the ground and I watched as red blossomed on his
left wing.

I spun around and saw a man kneeling behind a parked car, pointing a
rifle at Andrew, then saw that he spotted me. He shifted his gun to
point it at me. I quickly dove behind another car and heard the bullet
hit the side of it. I looked up and saw that he was reloading. I
glanced down at the street and saw Andrew on the ground, breathing
heavily. I glanced at the bleeding wing and the bullet-hole in it.

A non-lethal shot as far as I could tell.

I blasted fire out of my hand to try to scare the gunman, but he didn't
react.

He knows about me.

I ran toward the car he was hiding behind while he was reloading,
fumbling with the gun, like he didn't know how to use it.

I was suddenly behind, baring my teeth and showing my claws. I grabbed
the gun easily out of his hands and threw it out of his reach. He
stared at me, terror filling his eyes.

I felt sorry for him for a second, and then remembered that he tried to
shoot me.

I punched him in the face, feeling his jaw crack, and he fell to the
ground, his nose bleeding. He was out cold.

I ran over to Andrew, picked him up, and started running toward
Pocahontas State Park, and I heard the distinct thumping of helicopter
blades.

The gunman was just a distraction.

I suddenly burst into the clearing, my orange shirt stained red with
blood.

“Sarah, what did you do?!” Aaron yelled, running over to take Andrew.

“We don't have time for questions! Pack up, we need to go!”

“What's going on?!” At that moment, a helicopter flew overhead.

“I'll explain later!”

“Sarah,”

“Aaron, I'm serious!” A bullet hole suddenly appeared on the side of the
nearest tent, and I heard Kate scream from inside.

“Let's go! Don't bother grabbing your stuff!” Aaron yelled to the
others.

Two minutes later, we were running through the woods, dodging bullets.

“Kate, duck!” I heard Jake yell. She dropped down to the ground just as
a bullet whizzed over her head.

“Thanks!”

“No prob!”

“Sarah, what's going on?! Why are they attacking us?!” Aaron yelled to
me.

“I'm still trying to figure that out myself!”

I looked over to Jake and noticed that he looked worried and confused.
“Jake, what's up?”

“Something's out here.”

“Uh, yeah, those guys with the guns!” Kate yelled to the two of us.

“No, something else!”

“What is it?” Aaron asked.

“I don't know! All I can tell is it's big, and it's only thinking one
thing, over and over again.”

“What?”

“Kill.”

“Is it with the guys that are trying to kill us?” Kate asked.

“I'm not sure, but it's getting closer!”

Suddenly, something flew overhead, casting a huge shadow over us
briefly, then vanished, leaving the branches rustling from the wind it
created.

“What the heck was that?!” Clif yelled.

“That's our mystery guest! Spread out!” Aaron commanded. He shifted
Andrew's limp body to his other shoulder and changed his position to a
few yards to my left.

Suddenly, a loud screech filled the forest, almost like a giant hawk. I
saw the shadow go over us again, and then vanish. I suddenly felt a
searing pain in my back, and dropped to the ground. I looked over at
Aaron as the world faded into black.

It's all over.
