right?"  He nodded. 

She went on. "Tell me more about moss."  He thrilled at this chance to
teach her what she did not know. 

"The moss is green, but when it dries up, the bark turns red."  he
replied. 

"So where the setting sunlight hits the moss, the bark turns red.  Why
do you suppose that is?" 

Jurgen leaned back until his head rested on the yurt.  He thought about
possible answers, but none came to him.  The guru waited, then with a 
deft gesture she materialized a rusty sash weight of cast iron.  He sat 
up, reached out to take it from her -- and almost fell over under its 
weight. 

"It's red," he said. 

"Yes" she agreed. "And it glows at sunset because the dried moss leaves
behind the iron of its chlorophyll.  As the iron oxidizes, the bark 
turns rust-red." 

"Is that why firemen wear red suspenders?" he wondered aloud. 

"Perhaps," she responded, rising to brew tea.  "You wouldn't happen to
have another peach in that bag, would you?"
