When she made the move to Greenmeadow for college, she needed a job to
help her pay tuition and living expenses. Dan offered her the position
of “assistant vice president of sales”, which pretty much amounted to
ordering stock, changing displays, manning the counter and doing things
around the store Dan didn’t have time to do. Not necessarily what one
would imagine a vice presidential job to entail, but the pay was more
than generous for a record shop keep. He owned the building she lived
in and charged her and her best friend Andrew only $300 a month for
rent.

“Hey there, sunshine,” Dan said, giving her a little pat on the shoulder
as she walked in.

“Hiya, hon,” she said. “I’m leaving at 3 today, I have to do some
studying and run some errands. Is that alright?’

“Anything you want,” he said, flashing a broad smile then walking toward
the storeroom.

Ruth leaned a bit to watch him walk away, his jeans hugging his full,
tight bottom. Guilty pleasure. Dan was 37, almost 15 years her
senior, and she’d known him since she was 16. She felt wrong looking
at him lustfully, but she couldn’t help it. Dan was a solid 6’3” with
a lean, muscular build, short light brown hair with wisps of gray, and
gorgeous bright green eyes. He had a barely perceptible southern
accent, and sometimes used phrases like ‘fixin’ to’ or ‘right quick’
that Ruth teased him about, though she secretly found them charming.
She and Dan often met at the bar across the street for beer and pizza
after work or classes, and she’d come to like him more and more. He
was a veritable bank of musical information, a good dancer and great
conversationalist, and could knock down beers like a pro—a hearty
contrast to her prissy, cosmo sipping friend Andrew. Dan had become
one of her closest friends, and she figured that for the sake of
business and friendship, she would keep her girlhood crush to herself.
Besides, Dan thought of Ruth like a little sister, an idea she kept in
mind whenever she felt like gathering enough courage to ask him on a
real date.

Dan came back to the front of the store. “You know, we get the new Reid
album today,” he said. “Got you a limited edition copy.”

“Thanks, I’ve wanted that for months! What a boss,” she said.

“Anything for my best employee.”

“I’m your only employee,” she said.

“And that’s why you’re the best,” he replied, chuckling. “Say, you busy
after class tonight? There’s a couple of boxing matches on.”

Ruth had been thinking of going clubbing with Andrew to start off the
weekend, but something at that moment made her think twice about the
idea.

"I think I'll just stay home and study tonight," she replied, but
couldn't help thinking that by the end of the day she'd have other
plans.

"No worries," Dan said, "I can manage to drink with the guys for one
night instead of my most treasured employee and friend. Don't feel
guilty."

“Well, thank you for letting me off easy,” she said, hitting him lightly
with a CD sleeve.

“Any time. I’m outta here for now to pick up the new posters for the
window and pay some bills. Have fun, sell plenty, and don’t break
anything.” Another smile, and he walked out of the door.

7:35--Time to prepare to open the store. She undid the blinds, checked
the register and went to the PA system to put on music to play on the
speakers. It was such a gorgeous morning outside, so sunny and bright!
Bob Marley was perfect music for a morning like this—she found the CD
and put it on a track she’d been humming all morning, singing along:
“every little thing gonna be alright...”
