or thought she meant it harm.

~

Laura looked around.

Her eyes feasted on

elephants and giraffes.

They were too exotic

and would need to be tamed.

There were lions and tigers.

Laura knew about the

hidden dangers of these wild cats.

Laura even saw a polar bear or two.

She didn't like them though.

They seemed too cold.

~

Laura turned back to shelf

she started with.

Low and behold,

far in the back,

neglected and abused

was a little green turtle with eyes of brown.

The hard shell was used

for its protection Laura knew.

But she also saw the soft middle

the turtle hid from everyone's view.

~

Picking up the turtle

Laura knew she found her match.

Hugging it too her,

Laura repeated something

she heard once.

“I've known you since before time.”

~

Walking out of the store,

with the turtle in her arms,

Laura told the animal

a secret for his ears only.

“Forever and a day

I will love you and keep you safe.”

Then she sealed the promise with

a kiss.
