before I managed to stun old smelly with my shove. Then, I balanced
the skunk on the shovel blade and heaved him out. The daggone thing
had sprayed the chisel and hammer we'd brought along, so I told my
cousin, "You already smell, so you grab the tools." One of the good
things about my cousin; he could be talked into about anything at the
tender age of nine. I suppose he was already thinking about the
licking that was coming.

So, with him manning the hammer and chisel and me on the end of a pry
bar, we poked and pried away. Finally a small hole appeared and the
smell wafting out was awful.

We were commited and probably condemned, too. Finally, we had about
half of the end off. I shined the flashlight in (I couldn't let my
skunk-smelling cousin touch Mom's favority flashlight) to see the
treasure.

The only thing we culd see were some toes sticking up. Dang, we'd been
hoping the head would be pointed this way.

We had a short conference; it was pretty obvious this person wasn't rich
enough to have rings on his toes.

Over the sound of the creek we could hear a vehicle pulling into the
driveway.

We ran for the ladder, my cousin slipping and falling. I ended up
grabbing hime by the hand and getting skunk smell on me.

The vehicle lights were glancing off of the dirt mound.

The ladder tipped sideways and we both fell back into the hole.

The motor was shut off and two doors slammed, then silence... except for
the creek. We heard somebody cussing about the smell. From their
slurred talk it sounded like they had been drinking. I was hoping
against hope that they would encounter the skunk.

Twenty seconds later we heard footsteps coming closer and a couple of
dirt clods fell in beside us. Then, one of them said, "Man, I gotta
piss!"

I awoke from the nightmare.

Why was my bed all wet?
