partners. My e-mail addresses would be wiped clean and deleted. My
credit history would cease to exist and my social security number would
be for a deceased person. Nemea Mathis would be a tombstone in a
grave yard six months into my new career path. Like I said before,
many people would have a problem with that, but I was fine with it. I
hated most of my family and those I didn't were on there way to that
list. I did hate to turn my back on my girls, but it had to be done.
I worried about my best friend, Natalie. She was forever nosy and I
didn't think she would take my death lightly. To make it worse she was
a investigative reporter for the Houston Chronicle. Not bad for a girl
from a trailer park in a small redneck Texas town. I was hoping that
she would just move on with her life and not try to make my death into
some sort of crusade. When I approached Mr. DeMane about this, we
decided to make my death a plausible “accident.” I was known to be a
reckless driver and my 10 year old Neon was not in the best condition
(mental health counselors do not make money like Dr. Phil), so an auto
accident was perfect.

Six months into my career change, I had a fatal car crash that left
three others wounded and one other person in critical condition. I
attended my own funeral. I know some people would think that macabre,
but I was truly interested in what was going to happen. My mother
showed up late as usual and made a fool of herself my crying
hysterically. My younger sister got up enough courage to spill out a
few tears as well. My older sister was there with her family sitting
on the pew next to my mom and my younger sister. My older brothers
were no where in sight—what a shock (sarcasm here). Natalie got up to
say a few words. I guess my mom roped her into doing that, but I think
deep inside she would have done it any way. The church was packed,
which was shocking since I didn't even belong to that church. I had
not been particularly religious during my short lifetime. I think
Americans tend to use religion to cover up their own hypocrisy. At my
grave site, Natalie put a small satchel on my casket. I later paid the
gravediggers twenty bucks apiece to get the satchel. It was a wallet
picture of herself and a lock of her hair. Her way of telling me a
piece of her was with me. Later that day I burned the satchel and its
contents in my fireplace. That was my way of saying that I was cutting
the friendship connection and moving on with my life. I was done with
my old life and ready to begin my new life.

Since I had a master's degree in psychology, my first assignment was
working on obedience studies. Basically I was replicating the famous
obedience study with electric shock. After two days I was taken off of
that assignment. Apparently I became too excited at the thought and
actual process of hurting someone else. It was true. I enjoyed
hooking up the research participants. It was like a dirty secret I
had. I would make polite chit chat with them and give them the low
down on the study like protocol required, but then I would have my own
fun. I would turn the voltage knob up to the medium level to begin
with and hold my finger extra long on the button. I found that if I
slid my index finger down from the button, it made it last longer than
if I just pushed down on the button. So a second long shock would
actually last 2-3 seconds with my test subjects. The reverberating
sounds of their screams filled the chamber and made me smile. I felt
so at home, if you will. I should have known it would never last.
The last subject I had before I was removed sustained some minor brain
damage. I had turned the knob all the way to the end and the shock had
lasted over 30 seconds according to the charts. According to one of
the assistants, the louder the subject screamed, the more I smiled.
She stated towards the end, I was laughing hysterically and she became
frightened for her own safety. I was then moved to a new assignment
area and by true and current career began. I was finally the person I
was meant to be.
