something that she had always wanted to give to her father, and raced
over to her bedside table and opened the top drawer. Inside was a
scrapbook that held everything she had ever done for him when she was
little, from kindergarten drawings to photos of her on holidays, and
from little presents for him that she had made to story's she had made
about him. She got the scrapbook out and brought it over to her father.
How she loved that word: father. He accepted it without a word and went
to sit on her bed. Star followed him. They looked through the scrapbook
until the sky had almost turned black outside of her bedroom window.
Star's father closed the book and hugged her.

“Thank you for saving all of this. I never knew what to expect when you
saw me that first time.”

“Your welcome.” Star replied, thankful that she had finally found what
she had always wanted.

“Hey, what's your favorite magical creature of all time? If I know you
like I should, I think I know what it is, but just to make sure...” He
asked out of nowhere, a twinkle in his eyes.

“Hmmm...a dragon, I guess.” Star replied. Just then her father made a
sort of high pitched whistle. Five seconds later, something purple
zoomed in through the door and alighted on her father's shoulder.

“Star, I would like you to meet Raine. If you've read enough I think you
should know what she is.” Star's father said.

“She's a minor dragon. They grow anywhere from five to six inches in
height and are great as pets or assistances. But where did you get
her?” Star said, reaching out a hand to pet Raine. She was the most
beautiful purple, such a purple that you could not match it to any hue
in any world. Raine let out a hiss as Star tried to gently touch her
wing.

“Raine...” Star's father said to the dragon, with a hint of anger in his
voice. Raine nibbled affectionately on Star's father's ear. “Do you
have a piece of paper, Star?”

“Yes, just hold on a minute.” Star scrambled over to her desk and pulled
open a door that held her paper. She took out a piece and handed it to
her father. Raine climbed down his arm into his hand. Her father held
the piece of paper out in front of the dragon. The paper was suddenly
enveloped in deep purple fire. Star let out a yelp of surprise and
looked at her father.

“This is how Raine communicates with me. Her fire will not burn the
paper, but instead it will burn words onto it. See, look here.” Her
father explained, showing Star the finished product. On the paper were
words, as if they had been printed there. Raine had written:

'Christian, who is this girl that dares try to pet me as if I am some
domesticated animal? Why does she stare at me so?'

Star went to her desk to get a pencil, taking the paper with her. On the
paper she wrote the next message.

'I am Star, Christian's daughter. And it is a pleasure to meet you,
Raine. I am sorry if I have disturbed you.'

Star then held the paper in front of Raine, who burned her answer after
she was done reading Star's message.

'Well, at least you give descent apologies. Christian, what was it you
wanted of me?'

'I wish to give Star her birthday present. I know it will be a very,
very late one, but I know it will be more than enough to make up for
all of them I missed.'

After writing his message and letting Raine read it, she flew out the
door and disappeared. “What birthday present?” Star asked.

“You shall have to wait until in the morning, I'm afraid. But in the
meanwhile, we can have dinner. And after that, if you'd like, you can
take a shower and go to bed. I expect it's been a long day for you.
However, you can stay up as late as you want. If you need me or Raine,”
He said, taking a little silver whistle out of his pocket. “Just blow
on this. It's an Elven whistle, so it is very quiet, but I'll be able
to hear it through the sound amplifier in my bedroom. It will only pick
up this sound.”

“Thanks.” Said Star, taking the whistle. “Dinner sounds nice. I'm
hungry. And I could use a bath.” Star said. When Star went to sleep
that night, she dreamt of all the things that could become true here in
Zithia, and all the things that had already happened. She had no idea
that what her future might bring would be something she never expected.
