once the girl truly hadn't done anything wrong. She walked into her
bedroom and shut the door. Richard had to work late tonight so she knew
she wouldn't see him for another couple of hours. As she rolled onto
her side getting ready to fall asleep she spotted a picture of Jaime on
her dresser. She groaned she didn't even have the energy to be mad. All
the doctors told her it would be a boy. All the signs said boy and what
pooped out this hideous little girl. Jaime's father was furious with
Janice for giving him what he considered to be a horrible burden. He
beat Janice senseless for four years. When he found out she was
pregnant again he walked out on her. That was when Richard had come
into the picture. He was even in the hospital with her when Chris was
born and when she cried he used to walk up to Jaime and smack her. He
soon convinced Janice that her husband wouldn't have left her if it
hadn't been for Jaime. Richard taught her that it was okay to hit her.
He told her that her life would have been different, until one day
Janice was completely blind to the truth and believed all her problems
were Jaime's fault. Sighing Janice rolled over and fell asleep.

Chapter 2

December 26, 2013 Dear Diary, Mommy didn't beat me today, and Richard
only hurt me a little bit. I guess that makes today a really good day.
Chris even got a bath today. Soon I'll be seven years old. Soon I'll be
too old for bed time stories. Not that anyone ever reads me one. I
wrote another letter to God today. I asked him to make mommy stop
beating me and to make Richard go away. My prayer bible from Grandma
says that Jesus loves me. If he loves me so much why doesn't he take
care of me? I'd be good. I'd always eat my vegetables. I would even go
to bed on time and say my prayers to god. I'll do my chores and get
smiley faces on all my papers from school. I just wish he would come
get me. Richard says Jesus won't take me because I'm a bad girl and I
don't deserve to live with him. Maybe he's right that would explain why
he won't right me back. Sometimes I wish Mommy was dead. If she died
Richard would go away. I drew a picture today. It was me, Chris, and a
new mommy and daddy. Sometimes I wish I could go live with Carly. She
has a nice mommy and daddy. She's been my best friend for so long.
Before we went on winter vacation she told me she had another one of
her dreams. She was so sad she cried. She said that she had the dream
about the angel again. She dreamt that she woke up one morning on the
angels lap and when she told the angel she wanted to go home and that
she didn't want to be their anymore the angel told her that she can't
go home. Then Carly called for her mommy but the angel told her mommy
was in the bad place. Carly said that from now on she's going to sleep
in the room with her mommy and daddy. Well I better go to bed.

Things I Really Wish for 1.	I wish someone loved me. 2.	I wish mommy
wouldn't hit me. 3.	I wish Richard would go away. 4.	I wish Chris had
new shoes. 5.	I wish I had a puppy. 6.	I wish Jesus would take care of
me. 7.	I wish God would write me back. 8.	I wish daddy would come home.
Love, Jaime

Chapter 3

The sunlight was streaming in Jaime's bed room when she woke up the next
morning. She got up and went into the bathroom to use the toilet and
brush her teeth. I wonder what I should make for breakfast. She went
back to her room and changed out of her pajamas. She was sitting in her
chair brushing her hair when her mom walked in. “Do you wanna go
shopping with me today?”

Curious as to what her mom was up to she hesitated and then accepted the
invitation.

Jaime made breakfast and then went into Chris's room and woke him up.

“Mommy is taking me shopping today Chris.” She watched as his little
eyes when from still very sleepy to wide awake.

“She is? Does this mean mommy loves you now? “I don't know what it
means. I'm really not sure but I think mommies up to something and I
want to find out what it is. I made blueberry waffles for you when your
ready to eat and your clothes are laid out at the foot of your bed.”
With that said Chris reached up and hugged her and then promptly lay
down and fell back to sleep without even the slightest response. She
laughed to herself f and when down stairs in her nicest outfit to join
her mom.

“You ready to go?

“Yes mommy.” It was so nice out that they decided to walk. Hand in hand
they made their way through the crowded streets of London. They passed
many shops and finally made it to the little café that her mother loved
so much. They went inside and both ordered warm cider and muffins and
sat down to eat. “This weather is truly warm to be the middle of winter
Jaime.” “Yes mommy, the leaves haven't even fallen off the trees yet.”
Why is she being so nice to me all of a sudden?

Her mother laughed in response to her observation and paid the bill.
Hand in hand they walked out of the café. Maybe she does love me. With
that thought she let her guard down and decided to enjoy her day out.
She let go of her mothers hand so she could look around and when she
turned back so that she could show her mother the teddy bear in the
window of the toy store she couldn't find her.

“Mommy!” she called out a little bit panicky. “Mommy where are you!” No
answer. She turned around and started walking back in the direction of
the café when she heard someone call her name. It was a homeless man,
“Jaime”, he said “you've been a good girl and god has heard your
prayers.” By this point Jaime had been about to turn and runaway but
what he said made her stop dead in her tracks. How did he know I've
been praying to god?

“Jaime you only have a few more days to go. Your mom won't be able to
hurt you soon. Take care of your brother he will be scared and will
want to go look for her or for someone who knows what's going on. You
have a basement Jaime on New Years Eve take as much food water and
clothes down their as you can. Take the key from your mother as soon as
possible. Once she is gone the key is gone. Things will be Chaotic, be
ready. Oh and Jaime one more thing before I let you go. On New Years
Eve right before the stroke of midnight pray to god and ask him to
watch over Crazy while he is in heaven. Ask him to let me be your
guardian angel. Once you have done this thank him for all the things on
your wish list. Tell him that you know you can't have your daddy back
and thank him for your present it will be waiting for you in the
basement at exactly twelve O one when you go down on New Year's Day.
You haven't been forgotten little one just be patient a little bit
longer. Bye Jaime.”

“Jaime! Jaime!” She turned around and there was her mother standing just
a few steps away from her. “Oh Jaime there you are I was so worried
about you.” Jaime believed crazy for some reason and decided against
telling her mom about it so instead she said. “I saw a teddy bear in
the window and went to look at it and when I turned around you were
gone.”

For a second Jaime thought she saw fury in her mother's eyes then it was
gone and her mothers face transformed itself into a strained smile.
There wasn't anything authentic about the look her mother was giving
her. There was no warmth in her eyes and Jaime knew then that this day
would not end as she had hoped with hugs and kisses and warm words and
smiles. “Jaime lets go get you that teddy bear that you were willing to
get lost over.”

Jaime looked at her mom in disbelief. Relief chased that emotion right
of her face and then soon was replace by pure Joy. They walked into the
toy store and her mother actually bought her the teddy bear. Clinging
to it like it was the greatest thing on earth. She quickly forgot about
her conversation with crazy and began to bask in her mother's
attention. Jaime's eyes practically popped out of her head when her
mother walked into the most expensive department store in town. Jaime
tried on as many dresses and hats as she could she loved the materials
and designs and all the pretty colors. Everything she wanted her mother
bought her. In fact they bought so many clothes that Janice called for
a taxi to take them around for the rest of the morning. Just when Jaime
thought her day couldn't get any better her mom turned to her and said.

“Jaime, what do you say to ice cream after all this shopping I could use
a triple scoop of hot fudge sundae.” “Mommy this is the best dad ever,
can we really get ice cream?” Jaime asked as she beamed up at her
mother. Still clutching her teddy bear she began bouncing around her
mothers feet as she looked up at her mother she saw it again. That
flicker of something in her mothers eyes. That little light bulb in her
tiny head was beginning to flicker. There was something that was not
right about her mother, something that was not quite right about today.
She couldn't seem to figure out what it was. It felt kind of like a
word on the tip of her tongue that she couldn't remember. There was a
thought floating in the back of her brain that she couldn't seem to
grasp. Then it hit her, did this have anything to do with the phone
conversation her mom had this morning. For the millionth time she
wondered what her mom was up to but she was sure it was nothing good.
She still refused to ruin her day. She was happy no matter what her
mother's motives were.

“Yes dear we can go get ice cream”, her mother said smiling once again.
They tossed the last of their bags in the trunk of the taxi and set off
towards the ice cream parlor. She got a triple dipper of chocolate chip
cookie dough ice cream and her mother really did get a triple scoop of
hot fudge sundae. The ride back home was a silent one. Jaime sat eating
the last of her ice cream and thinking about the amazing morning she
and her mother had shared. I feel bad about not being able to bring
Chris when I get home I'm going to fix him a big lunch with lots of
potato chips. “Mommy?” “Yes Jaime” “Can we stop at the food store
really quick?” “Sure” “Excuse me driver I have one last stop to make
can you pull up in front of the food mart real quick?” “Yeah, sure,
what ever.” Once inside of the store her mother told her to grab a cart
and get what she wanted. Jaime filled their cart with all the food and
canned goods she could fit. She could hardly wait to start cooking.
Just the thought of actually having food in the cabinets made her
happy. When they got back in the cab Jaime turned to her mother and
said, “Thank you for all of this mommy. You really do love me.” When
she looked over to see why her mother hadn't answered her she saw the
far away look in her eyes. Her mother couldn't see her, couldn't feel
her, she couldn't even hear her. At the moment she was lost to the
world. Dead to reality and all of its many pleasures and pains. Janice
had fallen asleep, she knew she was sleep because she was sitting on a
cloud and a man in shabby looking clothes was standing over her. He
appeared to be talking to her but she couldn't hear what he was saying.
She could see him speaking but she couldn't hear what he was saying.
She heard his voice but could not make out the words he was saying.
With a sigh she shook her heard closed her eyes and then put her head
down. It was as if someone had turned on a switch and suddenly every
word he was saying was as clear as day.

“Ah. Janice, so you have finally found a way to listen to me.” He shook
his head as she attempted to say something. “Don't open your mouth to
speak Janice, you have no mouth and it will stay that was until I have
said everything I need to say.” Janice realized he was right. She put
her hand to her face and she had no mouth she couldn't speak had she
wanted to. The she blinked in surprise. How had she managed to sigh
without a mouth? “That's a good question Janice and the answer is the
sigh was in your head. You heard it in your mind and assumed it came
from your mouth. Now if you would kindly stop interrupting my story
with your thoughts. I would love to finish this before your car ride is
over so I don't have to come back and see you tonight. Now my story
begins back in the days of the apostles. It was foretold that a man
would one day walk the earth proclaiming to be Jesus returned to earth.
During his rise to power he would perform many miracles and bring
temporary world peace and unity to the people. This sounds kinda
familiar I'm sure I've heard Richard mention this before. “Yes you know
who I am talking about. Damien your bosses boss. You have known for
quite sometime that you have been working for someone evil and instead
of leaving and walking away from it all you clung to Richard. You
thought that if you two got married you'd be safe. Well no one told you
the end of the prophesy though did they? This is the end of the seventh
year of tribulation. Janice look around you your world is practically
destroyed. Damien has no friends as soon as he's done with Richard
he'll kill him. The apocalypse is about to begin Janice, there is no
escaping it. Their will be no night, their will be no day and when the
dust recedes and the sky is clear all people over the age of
accountability will die and whether you go up or down is completely
your choice. Any one under the age of seven will be forced to fend for
themselves. I came to tall you u this today Janice simply because I am
fond of Jaime. I will care for her in death as I have cared for her in
life. You will burn for the way you treated her. You will die with
everyone else but I want you to spend every minute dreading it. I want
you to watch the clock because every tick takes you one second closer
to the fire. Remember every bruise you left on her body, remember every
time you tied her to that chair, remember every time you let Richard
miss treat her. She will grow up to be great one day and you will burn
beneath her feet. I know why you took her out today. No matter what you
try to do to her she will live and she will thrive. She will die at a
ripe old age of a peaceful death in her sleep and when she goes the
world goes with her. When she cries it will rain. When she's mad
lightning will eat the sky alive. When she shakes so will the ground
and all the while you'll be burning in your own personal pit. Jaime is
trying to shake you awake now. I strongly suggest you remember
everything I've told you. You've got just enough time to ask one
question though what will it be.”

“Who are you?” “I am who appear but a man who has come with a warning.”
Janice jerked awake to Jaime steadily shaking her. “Mommy, Mommy, wake
up we're home.” “I'm awake dear” her mother said as she paid the driver
and helped Jaime carry all their bags into the house. Jaime went
through all the bags putting food away and then made a nice lunch for
Chris. She was so excited that she ran upstairs to get him. He was
lying on his bed watching T.V. “Jaime! Your home! How was it? Was she
nice? What did you buy? Did you get me anything?” “Come down stairs
with me I made your lunch. While you eat I'll tell you all about it.

Chapter 4

Jaime couldn't help but wonder once again why her mother was being so
nice. This was way to beyond not normal. What could she possibly be up
to though. Jaime just couldn't figure it out. She climbed out of the
car with a lingering feeling that something was still very wrong with
her mother. She recalled the look of strain on her mothers face in the
car as she slept on the way home. Something was definitely not right
with this picture. Actually, she thought with a start, since when did
her mother sleep in public period? That was her number one pet peeve
people who took naps in public. She always said it was a disgustingly
rude thing to do. She said it showed a lack of respect and self
confidence. ‘What could possibly be ailing mommy ? What could cause her
to break her own rules and be so nice to me. I wonder if she's dying.'
Jaime quickly dismissed the idea. It wasn't because the thought was so
morbid that it sickened her, actually the problem was the exact . She
got such a secret thrill out of the idea that she dared not dwell on it
for fear of disappointment . Little did she know that in no time at all
her dream would become a shocking reality. Too much had been going on
lately and she thought back to the strange little man she met back in
town with her mother. Jaime was startled out of her musings when the
door bell rang. ‘Who could that be? Mommy didn't say anyone was coming
over.' Janice walked into the room and on her way to the door she
stopped to give Jaime a big hug and a kiss. The bell rang again. “
Hello can I help you?”, Janice said as she opened the door with a smile
that seemed to belong to an angel. “ Hi my name is Francesca Devore
and I'm looking for a Ms. Conwell.” “ I'm Ms. Conwell come on in, sit
down make yourself comfortably.” “Ms. Conwell I'm not here for a
pleasure visit, unfortunately the nature of my business today is quite
serious.” Janice suddenly looked panicked. Jaime noticed her eyes
didn't match her face and once again wondered what her mother was up
to. “ Oh dear! Has something happened to Richard is he hurt? Is he in
the hospital? Oh please tell me he's alright!” “ Actually Ms. Conwell
this isn't about Richard at all. This is about your children. We have
received several reports of child abuse over the last couple of weeks
and I've been sent here today to talk to both Jaime and Chris
separately and in private.” Janice actually had the audacity to look
stunned. First shock registered then a flicker of the hidden rage she
had been suppressing . Then a flash of hurt. “ What. You can't be
serious who no earth would ever accuse me of hurting either one of my
precious little angels. My children mean the world to me. Flesh of my
flesh blood of my blood. What do you mean someone has accused me of
hurting them. What do you mean someone would come to you with these
outrageous accusations!” “ Ms. Conwell, I suggest you pull yourself
together Jaime looks fine and I'm sur5e it's nothing probably just
some jealous neighbors who hate how prosperous your life is compared to
theirs right. Don't be mad at the system, think about the welfare of
the child. Put the shoe on the other foot, suppose you thought one of
your neighbors might be abusing their child wouldn't you want someone
to go over there and check to make sure they were okay? The safety of
the child always comes first. You as a mother should appreciate this in
a way that other people might not.” Janice visibly relaxed and the
smile slowly returned to her face an embarrassed and shy version of the
one she wore earlier, and just as phony. “ Your right, I'm sorry. I was
overwhelmed at the seriousness of the accusations. I'm going to go out
back and water the flowers while you and Jaime talk.” She turned to
Jaime. ‘” Honey when you and Ms. Devore are done talking run upstairs
and get your brother for her please.” “ Yes mommy.” Janice left the
house and went out side looking quite smug and extremely confident. “
Well Jaime it's nice to meet you. I just want to ask you a couple of
questions. Is that okay with you. Do you feel comfortable talking to
me.” “It's alright Miss, I don' t mind.” “ Tell me about life with
your mother.” Jaime's eyes seemed to light up as she remembered the
promises her mom made her. As she remembered the wonderful day she had.
“ Oh mother Is wonderful”, she said beaming, “She even took me shopping
with her today! I think I've got the best mommy in the whole wide
world. She loves me! She really loves me. “ “ She doesn't hit your or
hurt you? Do you always get enough to eat?” Jaime only hesitated for a
split second “ No mommy is really good to me and Chris.” She lied. ‘
What does it matter what mommy did before. She loves me now, she
really loves me. I don't want her to be mad at me again. I don't want
to be bad. I have to be good so mommy will keep loving me.'
“Everything is fine here?” “ Yes Miss.” “ Well I'm supposed to question
your brother too but I won't waste anymore of your time. You seem to be
fine.” “ Jaime you can go get your mother now I'll see myself out.”
Jaime ran to the back window “ Mommy the lady is gone now.” Fire
flickered in Janice's eyes. She came back into the house and shut the
door. “ You little bitch!” She picked Jaime up and threw her against
the wall. “ Who have you been talking to! You think anyone else would
want a little piece of shit like you! Be grateful your not dead! I
should have aborted your sorry ass to begin with like Richard wanted me
to. You ruin everything!” Jaime slumped against the floor dazed and
confused afraid to move afraid to breathe. The air felt too thin. Oh
the familiar feeling. The room began to spin slowly at first then
gaining momentum. A reoccurring nightmare. The first kick, the second
kick, the third kick made her cough up blood. Her mother usually
stopped at the blood but her rage wasn't even beginning to cool off.
She began punching and hitting. Jaime's head, her back. The curses
faded into the background just a far away buzz. Jaime reached for the
blackness. She welcomed it. Sweet unawareness. Janice looked down at
the crumpled body of her daughter lying on the floor and cursed Jaime's
conception. The girl would be better off dead she ruined everyone's
lives. A pool of blood began forming under Jaime. Oh well she would
make her scrub the floors with bleach in the morning. Tomorrow she
would go back to the shopping center and return all the useless things
that's she bought for her. You don't buy pretty dresses and nice
things for bad little girls. She cringed slightly as she remembered the
strange dream she had in the car. Then shook off the idea. Richard was
right as usual Jaime was the source of all their problems. Taking all
of her frustrations out on the problem when she got home made her work
day almost bearable. Every barb from the other secretaries and
assistants. Poor Richard was so stressed out over the currency issue.
Our lives would be perfect if it wasn't for her.

Chapter 5

December 27, 2013

Dear Journal, What to do. What to do. That social worker came today.
Thank god that's over and done with. I did notice something interesting
tonight though. I actually felt bad about hitting Jaime so hard after
what I saw later. It turns out the old lady in the house across the
street was peeking through her binoculars the entire time. She was
watching through her blinds and reported the discipline sessions to
the authorities. The nerve of that lady not minding her own damn
business. Oh well wait till I tell. Richard about this he's going to
have a cow there is nothing he hates worse than nosy neighbors. He
didn't even want to move into this neighborhood to begin with. I'll fix
her I think some black curtains over all the windows should keep her
at bay the kind that you can't see silhouettes through. Or maybe one
day I'll grab a pair of binoculars and when I see her spying on me I'll
grab my pair and look out that exact window through mine at her and
she'll realize she's been caught. I think maybe I'll even leave a nasty
little present in her backyard. Maybe finding a snake in her bed sheets
when she lays down will teach her not to spy on other people. On the
other hand Jaime does so much that I think she probably got punished
for something I don't even know about yet. Working for the United
Nations can be so stressful sometimes. Richard works as an assistant to
United States representative Damien Carter. I work as Richards
secretary. I know he loves me it's just convincing him to marry me is
proving to be difficult. He says he doesn't want to be involved with a
woman with a little demon for a daughter and that we can't get married
until she leaves for boarding school. I personally can't wait till she
gets old enough to go. She can go stay with her grand parents for
holidays and vacations and I'll never have to see her again oh what a
sweet day that will be. Over and out, Janice
