Vampires, govt agency stuff, and some good old fashioned betrayal. This is a completely revised version from the original. I hope you like this one even more. | |||
Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story movement patterns” Reny replied. Reny was a good kid but was clumsy. Kenny had become a mentor to him, which proved to be frustrating at times. Sometimes he wondered in he was cut out for this type of work. It seemed only a matter of time before one of Reny's many blunders would prove to be fatal to himself or a member of his team. Something is definitely out of place here, Kenny thought. “Sheila, what are you showing?” “Same thing here sir, the EAR is giving me a faint heartbeat. Appears human. Think this is a wild goose chase?” Sheila keyed. Sheila was the one of the best IAs in the field right now and would probably be promoting to CSO within the year and Chasing within two. “Let's go for the sale. We need a documented visual and a DNA and I think we can call this a night – Reny you up?” “Yes sir” Reny replied. “All right. Let's go ahead and open up radio. My fingers need oiling” Kenny said then put the wrist communicator on sleep mode and switched his radio on. Reny shed his gear, put on a red ball cap and hiked to their truck which was about a quarter of a mile away. They had parked on a dirt road that ran to the north of flat pasture. The only cover available to the truck was a small pecan tree. Vehicle stealth was not the highest priority on most of these rural missions as long as the right vehicle was used. A camouflaged Hummer would probably give them away – an old pickup truck however would fit right in. Tossing his gear into the back of the truck, Reny opened the door to the maroon Ford F-100 and pulled the keys from the ash tray. The truck started up on the second turn of the key. Within minutes he was pulling in to the drive way of the small white house that they had been watching for the past three nights. With adrenaline playing hopscotch in his stomach Reny approached the front door. Slowly, he reached up and knocked three quick raps on the metal frame of the screen door. Within seconds the door opened. “Hello Reny. It's certainly good to see you again” It was Kenny. Beside him stood Sheila. On the floor next to her, a motionless body of a woman, probably mid-thirties. Standing over her was someone he hadn't seen before but he knew its kind all too well. He was tall, thin, and wore a long, neatly trimmed mustache. He was dressed like a priest but was not a holy man. Blue veins criss-crossed his pale face like a road map. His eyes were narrow vertical slits; glassy and sharp like those of a cat. The room, or rather, the tenant had a moist, musty smell reminiscent of retirement home cafeterias. “Nocturnes...” Reny started but Kenny cut him off. “Yeah, yeah. I know. A vampire. Fortunately for me, Mr. McCleod is a Traditionalist. Unfortunately for you Mr. Reny, this is a game where only the strong will survive. I don't like the bloodsuckers any more than you do however Mr McCleod here has worked out a deal with us. Thanks to him, we'll be able to nail about three local Moderns who have been creating some problems for us and put them out of commission forever” “I don't understand. What deal? What are talking about?” Reny was confused. The panic in his voice made Mr. McCleod's muscles tighten up, like a tiger preparing to pounce. Kenny gave him a three mile stare and said “The deal Mr. Reny is you. You are the weakest member of our team, probably end up getting yourself or someone else killed anyway... consider yourself a sacrifice to the greater good. Mr. McCleod here only kills what he needs. Certainly the lesser of the “two evils” I would say, wouldn't you? Mr. McCleod has been watching us these past couple of nights. He found you to be very interesting. He can be quite persuasive and we, or rather I, found his terms to most agreeable.” “You lied. This was all a lie. Don't do this Kenny!” Reny quickly dropped to one knee and drew for his sidearm. Reny's sudden movement triggered a predatory instinct in the vampire. With speed that was both graceful and supernatural, he reached out for the defenseless field agent. Before Reny could even position his weapon and get a shot off Mr. McCleod wretched Reny backwards by the hair, exposing his neck. He tore open Reny's neck, held him in a dark embrace, and extracted every drop of his warm, metallic blood. Reny struggled to free himself, but to no avail. After several minutes, Mr. McCleod dropped the lifeless body onto the cold, hard wood floor. Sheila, with eyes now as dark as the night, smiled an ancient predatory grin. Kenny, realizing now that the deal had been sealed, walked outside towards his truck...alone. Tweet
