A story idea from a song I heard. I hope everyone likes it. | |||
Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story world, Doc. She's the reason I get up in the morning. I don't know what I'll do without her.” Jim hears the song start over. He can't believe he's been out here this long. “I understand. I wish there was an easier way for you to deal with this.” Thomas doesn't know what else to say. There's nothing else that can be said. “I'll be here if you need me. She doesn't have much longer. Say whatever you have to before it's too late. You'll regret not saying what needs to be said.” “Thanks, Doc.” Jim replies with tears pouring from his eyes. He takes a minute to calm himself. He watches the doctor walk off and thinks to himself. “What does he know? He doesn't realize what it's like to tell the person you love to leave you alone. How could someone think I can endure without the love of you life next to me?” Jim lets go of the self pity and dries his face. Thinking along those lines doesn't help the problem; it only makes it worse. Instead of being strong for Elizabeth he wants to climb in a hole and hide from the world. Elizabeth wouldn't do that to him and him isn't doing it to her. “Maybe if I don't believe in it, it doesn't exist.” Jim tells himself. He reenters the room even though he longs to put it off. He listens as the singer comes to the chorus of the song. If I gave you my hand, Would you take it and make me? , The happiest man in the world? If I told you my heart, Couldn't beat one more minute, Without your girl? Would you accompany me? , To the edge of the sea? Let me know, If you're really a dream. I love you so. So, would you go with me?” “I'm lying here recalling better times.” Elizabeth smiles as she pronounces with pain in her voice. There isn't a moment without anguish anymore. “I think back to the old oak tree where you proposed to me. Do you remember?” “I'll remember always. You looked like an angel that day.” Jim smiles to hide his tears. “You still look like that to me.” He stops at the door to admire her beauty. Even this close to death, she is the most beautiful woman in the world to him. “Oh, go on with you.” Elizabeth tries to laugh but cringes instead. Jim rushes to her side. “No, I'm okay.” She throws up her hand to stop him, but it's too late. “ It sucks not to laugh anymore.” “You'll laugh again soon, my love.” Jim tells her as he reaches her side. “Yes, I have an impression I will too.” Elizabeth answers with glazed eyes. Jim, observing the woman who he can't live without, understands he's nothing without Elizabeth at his side. He realizes her dying will changes both their lives. The second verse plays. “Would you go with me, If we rode the clouds together? Could you not look down forever, If you were lighter than a feather? Oh and if I set you free, Would you go with me? “Elizabeth, I love you.” Jim begins telling her everything in his heart. “I know you do. I love you too.” Elizabeth, feeling afraid for him, searches his eyes. Having a grasp of how connected they are, she foresees him having a long row to hoe without her. She wishes things could be different for them, but life has a way of interrupting even the best-laid plans. “You've been there for me every day of our lives together. You're the mother of my children, my saving grace, my everything.” Jim takes a breath. Not wanting her to see the tears in his eyes, he looks down at her hands. “You're all that to me as well. I realize how difficult this is for you.” Elizabeth takes his hand. “But, everyone has to die, you know this. Just keep me in your heart and I'll be with you forever.” “I need you to know you can go.” Jim says with tears pouring from his eyes. He doesn't stop them now, couldn't even if he tried. Jim plays with the fingers of her hands, loving the feel of them in his. “I'm setting you free. Go, my love, and fly all the way to the clouds. Become the bird you've always believed you were. Take my love and soar as high as you can and I'll be there with you.” “Thank you, my darling. That's what I've been waiting for.” Elizabeth's breath becomes raspier. The chorus plays on in the background for them. If I gave you my hand, Would you take it and make me, The happiest man in the world? If I told you my heart, Couldn't beat one more minute, Without you girl? Would you accompany me, To the edge of the sea? Help me tie up the ends of a dream? I gotta know, Would you go with me? I love you so. So, would you go with me? Jim observes serenity appear on Elizabeth's face. Once again, she's the young woman he fell in love with. The torment is washed away. “How can I go on?” He exclaims to no one in general. Elizabeth glances over at him and with her last breath asks. “I love you so. Would you go with me?” She without waiting for an answer. “Gladly!” Jim cries out as he lies down beside her. He takes her in his arms for the last time. He kisses her cheek as the breath leave his body. Jim follows the woman he won't live without. The doctor walks in as Elizabeth is asking her question. He doesn't say anything to disturb the loving and mournful scene. Tears form in his eyes as he looks at the two people in the bed. Burke can't explain it in medical terms. But, he knows that Jim's death is caused from a broken heart. There's no way he could have lived without Elizabeth. So, he did the only thing he knew to do, he went when she asked.
