Deaf—don’t understand. Please write, it read.

Oh, my... Clarissa was utterly speechless, but now she fully
understood. Why Mr. Jeeters wasn't spooky at all! He kept to himself
because he simply couldn't hear! And those dark piercing eyes? They
held a hint of twinkle now. He handed her the crumbled paper and
stubby pencil and she began to write as well: “I’m sorry, Mr. Jeeters.
You're doing a nice job on Grandma’s lawn and bushes, but do you know
where she is?” She handed him the note and stubby pencil, and as he
wrote his answer, a familiar voice rounded the back corner of the
house.

Grandma sounded a bit weak, but still stronger than yesterday. "Well
now, I thought I'd be back by the time you arrived, Clarissa, but since
it's the first day back into my daily walks, I'm a little slower than
usual, I guess."

"That's okay, Grandma," Clarissa replied. "I was...uh...just talking
with Mr. Jeeters.”

“Wonderful,” Grandma said. “Now let's go inside and have our snack. No
cookies today though. There’s a chocolate pie waiting in the
refrigerator, just baked fresh this morning.”

Clarissa turned to Mr. Jeeters with the biggest smile she could muster.
As she waved goodbye, she knew there were two important things she
wanted to do. First, she would remind Grandma to always lock the door
when leaving the house. Then, tomorrow, she would bring Mr. Jeeters a
nice new note pad and brand new pencil.
