Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story Looking up at the stars, she was glad she had studied them as a Girl Scout. Discerning her direction is very important. What she really would like to know is where in heck she is! Is this still the USA? She remembered that the men all spoke English so that made her feel good. Looking about she saw that the only road leading from the site headed about southwest. It was rutted and very well traveled. Slowly and carefully she followed it for a few miles. She came to a gate that consisted of two pipes locked together. I would stop a vehicle but not her. She ducked under it and there a few more feet ahead was a major highway with lots of cars and trucks zooming by in both directions. Hardly had she stepped close to the road when a fellow (nice looking, smiling) stopped to help her. “What are you doing out here at this time of night?” “Just walking. Can you give me a ride to town?” “Sure! Hop in. I need some one to help me stay awake. Which town do you want to go to?” “How far is Orlando?” “Almost a hundred or so. What do you need? Those are obviously not your own clothes.” “Who are you and what do you do?” “Mike. I teach school in Ocala. I went north to visit my folks. Now I have to get back to go to work tomorrow. Can I do something to help?” “Do you have a cellphone?” “Yes, but it doesn't have many minutes.” “Do you know the number of the FBI or one of the drug enforcement agencies?” “Not very likely! What would I want to know that for?” “That's what I need.” “Call 911 they can tell you I am sure.” A few calls later, a promise to meet at Mike's place, and some very fast driving brought the two to Mike's apartment complex. She was hustled in to his place as quickly as they could move. It was not long before several unmarked cars appeared right outside Mike's place. Diana had switched clothes to some of Mike's because he was much closer to her size. Two men came into the apartment and spoke with Diana. They after only a minute or so hustled out to their car. It was a mad race to the site for protective custody. Two armed women were assigned to be with her at all times. Other officers in plain clothes took up guard outside. It took several days to tell them everything she had heard. Names, dates of shipments, quantities involved, and the places it was to be delivered. Mallow had been smart. He never told any one person all the details of the operation, but Diana was always there to overhear their conversations. So, she unintentionally knew everything about the operation and the people that worked with it. One of the women brought Diana a few clothes and went with her to the various shops in a nearby small town. Things were remarkably good for the agency and they were doing whatever they can to keep it quiet. Everything went well until, Diana met one of the goons walking in the little town. She tried to tell the agent, but they turned their back to her. He asked her, “Why are you no longer hanging around the ‘office?'” “I'm back in school for a little while. I'm studying bookkeeping. That should help Mallow – don't you think?” “It might of a while back, but after the next score he is going to live in Costa Rica. Didn't he tell ya?” “It must have slipped his mind. Is that the one that's coming to that little place above St. Augustine?” “Yah! That's it. Everyone is going to be there – I mean everyone. Me too doll. I'll watch out for you. Never can tell what money will do to some of them punks. Well, see ya! My girl is right there waiting. We live across the street number seven. Ain't that lucky?” “Bye!” Diana waved then got right in the car assigned to them. The next stop was headquarters and a room full of agents all waiting to ask a ton of questions. After Diana's testimony, the agency began setting up the trap. It was rare that they ever got anything on Mallow and they didn't want to miss this one. Diana was about to walk out of the room with her official partner when she saw some one that she knew to be a part of the mob! She didn't turn nor do anything that might make the man suspicious, but on the other side of the door – she stopped abruptly. Turned to the police partner and said, “This is an emergency. I know one of the men in that room is working for the mob! He will tell them, if he hasn't already!” They turned to look around the door only to face the muzzle of a gun pointed right at them. Another man came right up behind them also pointing a gun. The second man took the partner's gun. Diana felt like crying, but knew it wouldn't help them. When she turned she was closest to the wall and a small table. Quickly, she put out her purse and pulled several magazines that it held onto the floor. The cluttering fall aroused the attention of all the officers in the room and the ones nearby. Many guns appeared and the two men dropped their guns. “No worry now. If we don't appear, nothing is going down,” the one hoodlum said laughing. Diana overheard that comment and rushed to the chief of investigations. “Quick! You have to do something special! Right now!” “Hold it! Calm down please. Just what do you think is happening? The attempt at kidnapping has effected your brain. Where is your partner?” Diana thought for a moment. She thought that she had seen the chief before and not at the headquarters either. It was always on the golf course with Mallow! He is a part of the mob also, or being paid off by them! She walked away fast toward a very maverick acting officer. He was often speaking about being thwarted even when he had all the evidence he needed. This time, she would with some cooperation – make him a hero! He turned to her having seen what had transpired and said, “Well little lady that was closer than what I would have liked. Where did Northrop go? She is supposed to be with you at all times.” “That's not the name she gave me. It was Elizabeth Morgan or something. But it doesn't matter right now. I need some one's help that is honest. Could that be you?” “She was once my wife. That's her maiden name. What is going on?” Diana told him all she discovered in the last few minutes. Dick Northrop got on his phone and called internal investigations. He had worked with them before on the same sort of case. Diana went with him to their main office. There she laid out a plan to recover the shock value of the raid. Several men worked the plan simultaneously. The chief was soon in cuffs and the two hoodlums on their way in an ambulance to a very bad wreck simulated close to the site of the big deal. The wrecked cars were soon in place and the two ‘victims' arranged in the debris. They had been given shots that are supposed to keep them out for a very long time. One person in their own car drove up the road to report the accident to the mob that was awaiting the ocean going ship that is delivering their fortunes. The ship docked without problems and the mobsters began harassing the dockworkers to hurry the unloading of certain vehicles. Instead, on signal the ‘dockworkers' became armed police. The entire area was surrounded. Several paddy wagons were needed to gather all the perpetrators into jail. Diana off to one side away from most of the commotion with Dick beside her was about to turn and leave, when an ugly, dirty, fat, slob of a character stepped out from a clump of seagrape bushes with a gun in his hand. Like lightening, Dick drew his gun and shot the person right between the eyes. “That was Mallow the ring leader of the gang that you shot.” “Better him than us, dear. Let's find us a quiet spot and have a drink or two.” Thanks for reading. Chet O! 1 1 Tweet
