Danny's sleeve.

“Danny,” he whispered, “I have something really important to tell you.”
Danny wasn't listening. He had spotted Sophie, perusing the crime
section. This was his chance. There was no doubt in his mind that the
statue had intended immediate action on his part. He turned to Tim.

“Do you believe in magic?” he asked, solemnly. Tim blinked.

“Er...well I suppose so.”

“So do I,” said Danny, his eyes shining. He strode purposefully over to
Sophie, ignoring Tim's desperate whispers after him.

Sophie looked up as he approached. She smiled shyly again. Danny's heart
swelled.

“Sophie,” he began grandly and then dropped his voice to a whisper as a
chorus of ‘sshhhh' sounded all around him. “Sophie,” he whispered, “I
love you. You are my moon and stars. All my planets circle around you
and my flower can only blossom in your sunshine. Will you be my
girlfriend?” He smiled with satisfaction as he finished. He was rather
proud of that little speech. Sophie was gazing at him in amazement.

“Um...,” she stammered, looking rather desperate, “that's very nice
but...well...you see...I already have a boyfriend.” Danny felt himself
shrink by at least a foot.

“What?” Sophie was looking over his shoulder. Danny turned and saw Tim
standing there shuffling his feet. He looked back at Sophie. Surely
not? “Him?” he squawked, in disbelief.

“That's what I was trying to tell you,” muttered Tim.

* Danny stood outside and glowered at the statue. He had been lied to.
The statue had played a cruel and humiliating trick upon him. His face
burned. He had poured out his heart only to have it crushed between
Tim's ginger hands. The statue of the girl whispering to her friend
remained as if nothing had happened.

“The least you could do is apologise!” he cried, indignantly. He ignored
the curious looks passer-bys were giving him. The statue of the girl
shrugged. Danny wasn't even surprised. He glared balefully at her and
stalked off. Girls! They were nothing but trouble! He was never going
to look at another one ever again.
