Desiree's not done with Mark and uses Michelle to show him that they're not safe and never have been in the house. | |||
Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story a snarl of rage, he brought the knife down and agony ripped through her body. Again and again he cut her, and she rose above her body, watched the scene, but she couldn't leave. It was as if she were tied to the house and Poka stood beside her, also watching the scene. The man finished killing her, grunting in his exertion and absolutely soaked in blood. He stood up and pulled her body out of the way of the stairs, then crept up and entered her room. He grabbed one of her dresses and used it to keep from touching anything with his bloody hands. Carefully, he picked out clothes and some of her belongings then he studied her diary and wrote a letter, mimicking her handwriting. Then he snuck back downstairs after shutting the door. Then he waited until nighttime and carried Desiree's body out of the house and into the marsh where he dug a hole and threw her and her belongings in. He then returned and grabbed Poka who shared the same fate as his master. Lastly, he pulled all his pictures off the walls and grabbed his journal and buried them with her. Suddenly, Mark and Michelle were in the room, the light on but there was no sign of the scene they had just witnessed. The area had been cleaned of any blood and the walls were bare. Yet the desk and chair were still in the corner and if one looked closely, they could see a few pieces of tape still stuck on the wall. "Oh my god, Mark, did that really just happen," Michelle asked, absolutely blown away by what she had just witnessed. "I think so. I was right, she didn't run away. She was murdered in the basement and buried in the marsh, she was trying to tell me that in my dreams," he knew he needed to trust his instincts. They were usually right. "Who?" she wanted to know. "That girl, Desiree. Michelle, meet the other girl. We need to find her body, and the journal and the pictures. Maybe they can still catch the guy. But at the very least, we can put her at rest," he explained and saw her nod in agreement, "Though let's wait until morning. I don't want to go play in the marsh at nighttime. Especially not after that experience." Again she nodded then added, "Mark, I don't want to sleep alone. I'm scared." Knowing how she felt, he opened his arms and she practically ran into them. As he held her close, he knew he loved her, that he may have always loved her. Hand in hand, they climbed back up the stairs and out of the closet, into the office. She was the first to fall asleep, snuggled in his arms, her head against his chest. His heart ached so much, for Desiree, for Benny, even for Josh. Good people shouldn't die in such horrible ways. Yet they did, and some of them were never able to leave because of such events. After Desiree, he hoped that Benny wasn't stuck at the scene of the accident, forever roaming the area because he had died hard. After they helped Desiree, he was going back to the scene of the accident and apologizing to everyone. He would let his friends know that he had never meant for it to happen and that for the rest of his life, he would think of them every day. Somehow, he managed to drift off to sleep. Tweet
