A bride's vow on her wedding day. | |||
Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story “David, there's no other man that I want to grow old with. You're the one I want to lie next to at night, to look into your eyes each morning. I want to be there for every trial and tribulation, for all the joy too. There's not another man in the world that could do for me what you do.” Lisa pauses again to let the song catch up. She planned it this way to avoid breaking down into tears. It seems to be working so far. “A thousand miles between us now. It causes me to wonder how our love tonight remains so strong. It makes our risk right all along. The time we spent apart will make our love grow stronger. But it hurts so bad I can't take it any longer.” The sound of violins rises to a crescendo, and then slowly fades. The guests are so quiet. The old cliché about a pin dropping pops into her mind as Lisa looks around. Everyone seems spell bound by the love she's pouring out. Some know the personal cost involved. Lisa is a private person. She has always been the one to pull back from expressing any feelings. It's not that you have to guess what she's feeling. It was more that you had to really know her. Lisa feels emotions are the most private part of a person. They shouldn't be shared with just anyone. For her to be showing how she feels amazes everyone. It's a pleasant surprise for some, and a relief for others. They don't want to miss a word she says because of it. “We were separated by a thousand miles; maybe it was even a couple more. I know that we had one state between us. That was far enough for me. In the song it says he wonders how their love remains so strong. I don't wonder that at all. Our love has stayed strong because we have stayed true to each other.” Lisa moves around a little too lessen the tension in her spine. She knows now that she should have picked the other dress. This one was her favorite; it matches her dream of what a wedding dress should be. From the beaded custom fitted bodice, to the twelve-foot train, everything is perfect. Everything but the ribbing in the sides of the dress, that is. Even that was a compromise worth taking. Lisa listens to the chorus, taking as deep a breath as she can. She's almost busted the seams out a couple of times. She'll have to be careful. Lisa's dream is to pass her wedding dress down to her daughter. She doesn't want to have to explain why it's ripped. “You gave me a picture of you the very night we met. I don't believe in love at first sight. But, you did grow on me that night. Who knew what would come of our conversation?” Lisa watches David turn a little red remembering that first talk they had. “I know I didn't, and I know you didn't either. Boy, the things you can get into when you venture into an adult chat room.” The guests laugh to see the groom blush. Lisa waits for the last verse. “Things can come and go, I know. But baby, I believe, Something strong is burning between us, Makes it clear to me.” “The things that come and go aren't important to us. We've both been down this road before. We know what kind of pitfalls there are ahead of us. There's no reason to lie to ourselves, or each other.” Lisa wipes away a tear. “But, David, I do believe that if we're in it together, we'll make it to the finish line. The something strong burning between us is our love for each other. So, before God and all these witness, I want to say one more thing.” “I may not have been the first to tell you this, but I want to be the last. I want to make it crystal clear to you how I feel about you. David Thomas Smothers, I love you now and forever. I pledge my life to you today and will remain yours until the end of time.” Lisa's voice breaks as she takes a deep breathe. She looks to David, to hear what he has to say. Lisa hopes that whatever he says isn't corny or stupid. They'll remember this day forever. She's not worried about it though. Lisa knows that his will be words of love. As long as it comes from the heart it doesn't matter how he puts it. Even if he does crack a few jokes, she knows they'll be the right words. For she can see the love he has for her in his eyes. The words his eyes speak are the only ones important. Everything else is, as they say, the icing on the cake. Tweet
