Julie and Crystal make a new friend. | |||
Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story “How could you have gone on all those rides?” she asked. “It's ok to ask,” she began. “My grandpa lifted me out of the wheel chair and sat me in the chair of the rides.” “Where were your mom and dad?” asked Crystal. Daisy sadly looked down, “My dad was killed last winter in a car accident. I was in the car too, that's why I can't walk. Grandma and Grandpa came to Texas to help mom while I was in the hospital. They decided it would be best for us to move here with them.” “I'm sorry,” said Julie. “Me too,” said Crystal. The bell rang for lunch. “Can I help you go to lunch?” asked Crystal. Daisy smiled. “I don't need help. Look.” She pointed to some buttons on the arm of her wheel chair. She pushed a button and went in reverse. Her fingers worked the other buttons and quickly she was turned around and ready to go to lunch. “Neat!” said Jimmy as he walked beside her. “Can that thing go fast?” Daisy smiled. “I'll show you how fast when we go out to the playground.” After lunch Miss Ellison wrote some math problems on the board. She told the class they had fifteen minutes to work in their group and complete the problems. When the time was up, she would ask one person from each group to write their group's work and the answer on the board. “Do you want to work them together or each take one of the problems?” asked Daisy. Julie and Crystal frowned. “We're not good at long division,” said Julie. “That's ok,” smiled Daisy. “I was math champion in my class last year. I can teach you how to do them.” Julie and Crystal looked at each other and smiled. Daisy worked the problems explaining each step to her study partners. When it was time for them to put a problem on the board, Crystal carefully copied Daisy's work and was told it was correct. Next came spelling class. Daisy looked at the words and frowned. “I'll never learn to spell these words.” “We're good at spelling. You help us with math and we will help you will spelling,” Julie smiled. Soon the school day came to an end. “What are you doing after school?” asked Daisy. Crystal hesitated. “Julie and I planned to ride bikes on the bike trail at the park.” “Is it ok if I meet you there? If you don't go too fast I can keep up with you on the trail.” Julie and Crystal nodded. “Sure,” said Julie. “The three of us can have lots of fun.” Tweet
