A few short stories from prompts, they just seem to pile up and are too short to put on by themselves. | |||
Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story “Yes, it hurts bad today.” Nancy had been in an automobile accident. Her parents and brother were killed by a drunk driver. Orphaned, she had no visitors and would soon be gone herself. Internal and spinal injuries could not be corrected by the doctors. It would get progressively worse. The nurse stopped for a moment to change IV bottles, putting on a much stronger dose. Soon the little girl slept. She slept until the next morning and was pleased to see the roses framed in her window. The tops of the flowers seemed to merge with the bottom of the colored leaves outside. A sunbeam lightly caressed the flowers, highlighting the brighter tops of their leaves. The sick little girl was so filled with pain killer that the scene seemed surrealistic in its beauty. She tried to rub her eyes but couldn't move her arm. Nancy felt light and at peace. She finally let her heavy eyelids settle, forever, without really noticing the fading, wilting, roses. ******* Chicken Little Farmer Brown was fixing the henhouse roof. He spent most of the day putting new shingles on the roof to keep rain from coming in. All that wet straw inside was causing his chickens to catch colds and lay square eggs. Square eggs were hard to sell. You wouldn't want to eat them, would you? Well, Chicken Little walked past the henhouse just as Farmer Brown dropped one of the new shingles. It almost hit the unlucky little chick on the head. Chicken Little looked up and saw the blue sky. He then looked down and saw the blue tile. Now, Chicken Little was not very bright but he could add two and two and, sometimes, get four. Can you do that too? He pecked at the shingle. No, it was not good to eat. The little chick decided that the blue sky was falling down. Chicken Little ran and ran. He ran three times around the barnyard to escape the falling heavens. Oscar, the rooster saw him running and, putting out his leg, stopped the little chick. “What are you running from little chicken?” “The sky in falling, the sky is falling, Run, Run, Run, The sky is falling.” Screamed Chicken Little. “Where can I hide?” Oscar the rooster looked up at the sky and saw nothing but blue sky and white clouds. Just what you would see it you looked up at the sky. “What makes you think that Chicken Little?” “I saw it. I saw it. A piece almost hit me on the head.” “I don't think so. Have you been smoking that funny stuff again?” “No, really. I saw it.” “Then show me what you saw.” Chicken Little led Oscar to the piece of tile. Oscar walked around it a few times. He scratched it with his toes and pecked it with his beak. He looked up and saw the blue sky. He looked down and saw the blue shingle. About that time farmer brown dropped another shingle. It hit a rock and splattered the ground with blue pieces. “See, See, See.” Cried Chicken Little. “The sky is falling, the sky is falling.” The normally placid Oscar, being hit on his tail feathers by a splinter, started running around the barnyard himself.. “The sky is falling. The sky is falling.” Screamed Oscar, as he ran. Chicken little looked up again and saw Farmer Brown standing up and looking at that crazy rooster, running around the barnyard and cackling in panic. He just shrugged and returned to his work. Chicken Little saw Farmer Brown standing with blue shingles in his hand and figured out what had happened. A couple of hens, astonished by the roosters antics, came up to Chicken Little. “What happened to Oscar? Did he lose his mind?” They asked Chicken Little. “That is one stupid rooster.” Chicken little replied. ******** Rudolph the Red Nosed Cockroach Rudolph the red-nosed cockroach stuck his little nose out of his hole. Rudolph was looking to see if the human, Tommy, was in his room. No, No Tommy around. He rushed back on all six legs and grabbed the bundle. He rushed back fast as he could. Rudolph always rushed. Seeing it was still safe he tugged his package out of the hole ands began shoving it across the bedroom. Then Rudolph grabbed it and pulled it up onto Tommy's bed. When Tommy got home, it was Christmas, he found Rudolph's little gift. A piece of sugar. on his pillow. ************* Teddy Roach Teddy Roach was the first of fifty four foot stuffed cockroaches to come off the assembly line at the toy factory. He dropped into a big tub. Teddy Roach looked up and saw a pair of hands grabbing him. Since he was the first stuffed cockroach ever made, everyone wanted to hold him. All the factory workers took turns holding him and petting him. They had pictures taken. He even had his picture in the newspaper. He did not have any ears, so he could not hear that they were making fun of him. Teddy just thought the people all liked him. Teddy found that he was a very popular cockroach. This lasted for days, until one day, Teddy was thrown into a box with other stuffed animals. He had a stuffed spider, a stuffed alligator, and three stuffed rats in the box with him. When the box was opened, Teddy Roach found himself in a big room. The room was filled with all kinds of stuff. It was the back room in a toy store. A woman finally picked him up and took him in the store. She put a price tag, it said “Special. Toy Cockroach. Only $50.00" on it. It was almost Christmas and Teddy was with a lot of big stuffed toys. Even the stuffed spider and two of the rats. All lot of dolls were sitting with them. When the store opened little kids started coming in. A lot of them headed for Teddy's table. The little boys bought the soldier dolls and the little girls bought the little girl dolls. One even bought one of the rats. Teddy was hoping that one of them would buy him. But they didn't. Finally, it was two days before Christmas and Teddy was hoping so hard that he found he could cross his legs for luck. This was very hard for him. He had practiced all night. Teddy thought if he waved his eight legs it would attract a little girl. A clerk just came over and uncrossed them though. All day the little kids kept coming, and the dolls kept getting fewer. A parent bought the other rat, and others bought most of the other dolls. Teddy just sat there, hoping, and crossing his legs when the clerk was not looking. The clerk came over and, uncrossing Teddy's legs again, replaced the sign with one saying “Great Deal, only $ 20.00". Still, nobody bought the sad little Teddy. Teddy spent all night learning to wave his arms around. With the table almost empty, Teddy was getting desperate. The next day Teddy was sitting with only six other dolls. When the store was opened he was soon sitting alone on the big shelf. Teddy was getting desperate. Whenever he saw a child he would look around for the clerk. If the clerk wasn't looking Teddy would wave his arms all around to get the children's attention. Just before the store closed, the store manager came over and put a new sign next to Teddy. It said “Super Duper Sale. Only $ 1.00". The children bought other things but didn't buy poor Teddy. A little girl named Jennie finally came in with her Daddy. They were in a hurry because they only had 20 minutes to shop before the store closed. Jennie was deaf and, like Teddy, could not hear her Daddy when he tried to stop her from grabbing Teddy. He said “Jennie, leave that ugly thing alone.” Her Daddy tried to take Teddy away, but Jennie held on tighter. She started to cry. Her Daddy finally bought Teddy for her. It must have been the humidity, because her Daddy thought that they were both crying when they left the store. You see, Jennie saw Teddy waving his legs at her and thought he was using sign Language. He was saying sweet things to her without knowing it. Later little Jennie taught Teddy how to talk with his legs. She was the only kid with a doll that could talk back to her. *********** Hope you enjoyed them, These things tend to pile up and are too short to put on by themselves. Charlie Tweet
