A Further Adventure of Alice and the White Rabbit in Wonderland | |||
Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story Captain and Mad Hatter the Lieutenant, the others privates all. The Hatter threw Elmer, the Dormouse, across the field and away they went, in wild abandon, after him. Elmer, on his part, didn't like to be the ball. He dodged the Ace of Hearts and ran between the eight and nine of spades, only to be grabbed by the six of clubs, who ran toward the sidelines. He was afraid of the lumbering Moe. Moe was lumbering with a two by four, so the fear was real. The only rule was that the Queen had to win. Queens always have to win, to have order in the world. Alice, trying to save poor Elmer, ran over and grabbed him from the six of clubs. She stumbled back onto the field, holding a crying Elmer, who for some obscure reason, if reason it was, had turned into a crying baby. The twelfth of Diamonds tried to stop her but, being made of only cardboard, cheap cardboard at that, was shoved aside. The queen called time out. Time to change Elmer. Oscar had the fresh diaper, he always carried them since he had a lot of children himself. It was best to have them than to have them not. Soon a fresh Dormouse was pitched back onto the field, landing in a spare rabbit hole, into which he quickly scrambled. The Red Queen sent Larry for a shovel while the rest of them took a tea break. “It's a wonderful game, don't you think?” Said the Mad Hatter to the Red Queen, dipping his Nacho into the tabasco sauce. “Reeather.” Replied the Red Queen, “If we don't find him by Tuesday, I'll chop off his head..” Nobody seemed to notice Elmer sitting at the end of the table. But then nobody ever seemed to notice Elmer. They sat for a while, watching the cards play solitaire, until the tea got cold. Elmer, the Dormouse, and Larry returned to the rabbit hole, Elmer carrying the shovel, while the others finished their biscuits and gravy. A rare treat since, in Wonderland, biscuits liked to run away from the gravy. Blowing a tin whistle, the Queen resumed the game. Elmer, taking his que, laid down the shovel he was using to dig himself out and ran toward the Queen, who, seeing what appeared to be a mad dormouse, ran back toward her goal. Oscar, the white rabbit, picked him up and gave him the last cookie. Meanwhile Alice and Moe stood their ground as the entire deck of cardboard cards tried to force their way past, in pursuit of the Dormouse. The cards fell like a deck of cards as the nimble Alice and the, less than nimble, Moe stood their ground. A tired Dormouse paused in front of the Red Queen, who picked him up in triumph. The game was over, with the Queen winning, of course. Just in time for another tea break, in honor of the exhausted Dormouse. Tweet
