“Drakon?” she frowned, thinking this a dream or an illusion. His cold
hand found hers and grasped it, intensifying the feeling of confusion
and giddiness that’d suddenly came upon her.

“Sioux,” he smiled, looking at her face with kind eyes and she abruptly
realized he looked exactly the same he had the last time she’d seen
him, eight years ago, when they’d been almost children.

“Oh, my god, it IS you!” she cried out and put her arms around his neck,
her sobs making her nearly collapse in his arms.

“So, you took Elrych from me?” she was looking up at him as she sat on
the curb outside her house and he stood, looking down at her.

“Yes,” he bowed his head.

“Is he as you are now?” she carefully inquired

“No. He’s . . .” he looked at her suddenly, “I’m sorry, Sioux.”

“It’s okay. You are here now, the rest doesn’t matter,” she said
thoughtfully.

“And . . . you are well? I mean, with your husband?” he frowned at her.

“I suppose. I have a child, you know? His name is Aiken,” she added.

“Leave with me, Sioux,” he suddenly got on his knees and took her hands
in both of his.

“Drakon . . .” she replied, frowning.

“I know eight years is a long time and the times change. But I think you
will find people never really do,” he reassured her.

“But I have a child,” she protested.

“He has a Father who loves him. Leave it all behind, Sioux. You’ll be
young and beautiful forever,” he said.

“And with you?” her eyes filled with tears but these were of hope

“Yes,” he bowed his head gravely, “With me. Forever,” he finally looked
up at her, a shadow in his eyes she did not seem to notice.

“All right,” she smiled, “Take me with you,” she stood up and so did he.

“Sioux,” he whispered, taking her head in his hands and kissing her. He
put his arms around her and nuzzled his head in her neck, kissing her
tenderly. He was about to bite when he heard someone call his name from
behind him.

Tai stood a few steps from them, carrying what looked like a dead victim
in her arms, the head turned towards her so it was unrecognizable.

“Tai,” he breathed as he stood beside Sioux, his heart contracting
inside his chest.

“So this is she?” Tai asked motioning towards Sioux, who simply stared
at her in undisguised shock and confusion.

“You plan to make her a Blood Drinker?” Tai asked, her child-like voice
echoing in the stillness.

“Yes,” he whispered.

“Ah,” was all Tai replied.

“Tai, what are you doing here?” he finally asked.

“I came seeking you out,” she said, “I needed to talk to you.”

“About what?” he inquired.

“I don’t know where to begin,” she said, shrugging her slight shoulders.
He noticed she wore black leather tonight. She never wore black
anything.

“Give it a try,” he was near tears now.

“Drakon. You know that in all of this time . . .” she started but
thought better of it, “I guess what I meant to say was that nobody
knows me as well as you do. And you know how hard it is for me to shake
the disease that takes hold of my time in situations like the ones you
and I seem to find ourselves in,” she said and let the lifeless body
she carried fall limp to the floor, “But I did it . . . For you.” The
dead body on the floor was that of Elrych Wylken.

“Oh my God,” Sioux gasped and put her hand to her mouth. Drakon simply
looked at Tai in surprise as Tai simply stared at him, looking very
young for those moments and undeniably human. He softly let go of
Sioux’s hand.

“Drakon?” Sioux turned to him but he was already walking away towards
Tai. Drakon looked into Tai’s eyes and they smiled. Slowly –too slowly,
it seemed to Sioux- he took Tai’s hand in his and both started walking
in the opposite direction of Sioux, without ever looking back.

“Drakon!” Sioux’s sobbing voice echoed in the still Night.
