He returned the prank followed by a hefty laugh that shook the house, and then we heard heavy footsteps scurrying up a staircase. Soon home baked treats of every kind appeared from their cabinets. There were chocolate chip and sugar cookies, little tarts willed with blueberries or cherries, cupcakes with candy corn on top, and a variety of homemade candies. When all was distributed, one of the ladies would say, “That's not much,” and add freshly picked red apples. With our treat bags overflowing, we got the truck and begin the journey out their long dark lane. I will never forget this drive the last year I went trick-or-treating. The night was very dark; the only light came from the headlights on the truck. Part way out the lane, two foggy lights appeared through the corn stalks looking like huge blazing eyes. It had a mighty roar that echoed through the valley. A moment late, the old truck stalled and the headlights went off. The creature weaved back and forth through the field coming closer and closer. My aunt screamed and locked the doors of the truck cab. We tried to get her to unlock the doors so we could squeeze in, but she covered her face and shook her head no. One of the older boys thought we might be able to push start the truck, so we all jumped out and began to push. We had only managed to move the truck a few feet when the gigantic creature reached the edge of the field. It turned toward us and moved slowly across the field coming closer and closer. It let out a huge puff of smoke and we all screamed. We again pounded on the truck window, but my aunt wouldn't let us in. After a few moments, she pointed to the creature behind us and we noticed she was laughing. We all quickly turned around to find Mr. Fisher's old steam engine tractor a few feet behind us. With a hefty laugh and a wave, the husky young man who had shyly waved at us from behind the living room door steared the tractor into the field and disappeared. My aunt was laughing so hard she couldn't speak when she opened the truck doors. Then finally told us to get in, it was time to go home. My aunt brought us home, then left to take her children home. I showed Mom and Dad my treasures and shared the delicious treats. What kind of treats did you get... Happy Halloween to all! Tweet
