Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story “Babe, what are you doing out here, come swim with me!” Chad was sopping wet and his face was red, as though he had just swam ten miles. “Honey, I just want to relax,” she explained. “Besides, I want a nice tan.” She pulled him down next to her and laid her head on his chest. “Why don’t you lie here and sleep with me, it’ll be romantic.” She kissed his cheek. “We didn’t come to Florida to be romantic, did we?” She turned and glared at him, pushing herself up off him. Her cheeks were as red as a boiled lobster “No, I didn’t mean it that way Kate...” he began. “I’m sure you didn’t,” she cut him off. “You never mean to say anything wrong or do anything wrong, do you?” She got up quickly, grabbing her towel and lotion. “Aw c’mon Kate, wait a second.” He grabbed her arm. She angrily jerked her arm from him. “Wait! For what Chad?” She took a step back away from him. “That’s all I’ve been doing for two years now! Waiting for you to love me as much as I love you. Waiting for you to finally realize what I’ve known all along!” He stepped closer to her. “And what is that?” He threw his hands up in frustration. “That we were meant to be together! Then. Now. Always!” Tears streamed down her face, she was finally telling him the way she had felt since she had first met him. Chad groaned. “Not this wedding stuff again Kate. I already explained to you that I’m just not ready for that kind of commitment. I’m too young, and so are you.” His piercing emerald eyes burned deep into her heart. She turned her back to him, the tears soaking her cheeks and the sand below. She tried to sound calm. The entire beach was staring at them, like it was some dramatic scene in an over-watched soap opera. Swimmers had stopped swimming. Tanners had stopped tanning. The two little boys had stopped the construction of their over-sized moat. All eyes were on her. “You are twenty-four years old Chad, and I am twenty-two, I hardly find that too young to be married, especially after we have lived together for over a year. Admit it, I love you more than you will ever be able to love me.” “Now that’s not true. I do love you. Just not enough to marry you.” He touched her shoulder. She shook her head. (Did he ever think about what he was going to say before he said it?) But the words held truth. He didn’t love her enough to commit his life to loving her. The realization stung like rubbing alcohol on a scraped knee. She was so blind. She shook his hand off her shoulder and turned to him. “I know Chad, and that’s what hurts the most.” He sighed. “I didn’t mean it like that either,” he protested. “I’m just not sure if this is the right time or not...” She barely heard his explanation. It didn’t matter to her anymore. Nothing mattered to her. She wiped the tears away, trying to get her baby blue eyes to focus. She wanted to be away from him, far away from him. She turned and walked away. He didn’t follow. She awoke from her slumber uneasily. She was not sure exactly how long she had been sleeping under the palm tree. Though the sleep had done little to calm her mind. She felt so alone. She had wasted her life with him. He was her life. She had been with him so long, she knew no other way. She had been so foolish. Crazy even. Thinking that Chad would want her as his wife. He probably had some other woman. A beautiful woman. Much more so than she. Crazy, that’s what she was. She gazed out at the clear blue water. It looked so harmless. The tears began to fall once more. Why was she here? The sun had begun to go down, and Chad would be looking for her soon. The beach was now virtually empty, aside from the two teens touching and kissing in the shade of a dune. She was so stupid to think that some escapade to Florida would make Chad want to marry her. The idea seemed so ludicrous to her now. She put her hands over her face, catching the tears as they fell, one by one. She vaguely remembered Chad finding her and taking her back to the hotel room. He had tried to explain the whole way back to the suite. She didn’t listen. Didn’t even care. As far as she was concerned, her life was over. She had nothing, (Was nothing) without him. She had nodded when he had asked her for forgiveness, though she didn’t really forgive him. He had been happy by that. He had taken her. Had swooped down upon her, like a vulture really, covering her with his body. His lips and hands had been all over her. Though she felt nothing. He had consumed her body. When it was all said and done, she had watched him sleep. The rhythm of his chest rising and falling mesmerized her. The act had left her feeling more empty than before. All she was to him was a body. Not worthy of love. She got up slowly, throwing on a pair of shorts and shirt. She bent down and kissed him. It was a shame she was not good enough for him. “Goodbye.” She whispered into his ear. She left the room without looking back. It was after midnight. The beach was completely devoid of life. The water was dismal, eerie even. Like a black hole, drawing her into its depths. It was harmless during the day, yet at night its waves crashed onto the shore. It was like hell really. The empty, black gates of hell. She looked back at the resort. She was sorry it had to be this way. She stepped out into the water. The cold lapping at her ankles. She kept walking. There was no turning back now. No looking back. Tweet
