As she carried her bag to the room she couldn't help thinking about what the constable has said about Orloff. What type or research project would he be involved in and why was it hidden away in an old castle on the side of a mountain. "What do you really think this Dr. Orloff is doing in that castle Sam," said Rebecca closing the door to their room. "I would say that he is up to no good Becky," she replied turning down her bed for the night. "We both will have to be very careful when we visit your sister tomorrow." The next morning Samantha drove the small car along a narrow winding road to Blackmore Castle. The castle was situated as the constable had said on a high ledge on the side of a mountain looking over the valley below. The grounds were unkept and overgrown with weeds but the castle was sound and dated back over two hundred years. "The castle looks solid enough," said Samantha rapping the huge door knocker loudly. "I wonder if Dr. Orloff is about." a few minutes later the huge door was opened b a servant and they were both escorted into a large parlor. It was neat and clean and a few moments later a young women entered and smiled at them both. Rebecca is it really you," she said clasping her sister in a warm hug. "What in the world are you doing here?" "We just thought that we would surprise you with a visit, " replied Rebecca. "This is my friend Samantha Jones. How are you getting on in your new job?" "Oh fine I guess,"she replied. "But his Dr. Orloff is a strange fellow. He got into a tremendous argument with his assistant last week and sent him packing. He now has taken on a young female student from the medical school and thy have been constantly in his laboratory. A whole mess of new equipment arrived two days ago and God only knows what it is for." "Interesting," aid Rebecca. "Do you have any idea what they were arguing about?" "Not the foggiest my dear sister," she replied. "One of the servants did tell me that she overheard that the assistant was concerned about the direction Dr. Orloff's experiments were going." "And this new medical student that he has hired," said Samantha. "What is she like?" Her name is Heidi Steinberg," replied Susan. "She seems nice and is quite attractive. She is also the sort that would do anything to work with the great Dr. Orloff." "I see," said Rebecca. "Both Sam and I were planning to spend another week or two in Germany before returning home and I think we should spend some time with you. Perhaps we can find out exactly what Dr. Orloff is up to for you may be in great danger." "An excellent suggestion Becky," said Samantha. "Perhaps you could tell the good doctor that we have been traveling in Germany and have stopped by for a visit." "I am sure that he wouldn't mind you spending a few days with me," said Susan. "There is plenty of room and you could stay out of the way." Suddenly the parlor door opened and a short gray haired middle aged man entered. He was followed by a tall young attractive women of about twenty. They both wore lab coats and the man carried a hand full of papers. "Oh Susan I would like you to type up these notes that I have just prepared," he said. "There is no immediate rush but I would like it done when you have the time." "Oh Dr. Orloff I would like to introduce my sister Rebecca West and her fri end Samantha Jones," said Susan. "They have just arrived from America and I was wondering if they could spend a few days with us?" "This is a pleasure Miss Jones," said Dr. Orloff shaking hands with the two young women. "I would also like to present my assistant Miss Heidi Steinberg. There is no reason that you shouldn't be allowed to stay here in the castle provided that you stay out of the way so that we may continue our work. I will have a servant prepare a room for you." "Thank you Dr. Orloff," said Samantha. "We will keep out of your way and you will never know that we are here." "I would appreciate that Miss Jones," he said. "Miss Steinberg and I are engaged in some impotent research and it must proceed quickly. Perhaps she could give you a tour of my laboratory later this evening if you are interested." "Yes, that would be wonderful," replied Samantha. "Your experiments are all the talk of the village especially the magistrate and constable." Rebecca took note as Dr. Orloff and his assi stant suddenly grew pale. The young woman turned as if to speak but remained quiet dropping her head. "The villagers are all superstitious fools Miss Jones," said Dr. Orloff. "They have no understanding of modern science and what this will mean to the world. Once Miss Steinberg has given you a tour you shall all see how important my work is." Dr. Orloff then turned and then left the room. Heidi followed but as she passed Susan she pressed a small piece of paper into the young woman's hand. "I don't like this," said Rebecca. "We all may be in a great deal of danger here. Perhaps we should leave this castle as quickly as we can and not concern ourselves with Dr. Orloff and his experiments." "Now hold on Rebecca," said Susan. "You were always the one to look on the gloomy side of everything. Heidi has just given me this note. Let me read it to everyone before we make a final decision." Susan unfolded the piece of paper and began to read, "Susan, have you and your friends meet me in th e garden by the old fish pond in one hour. Do not let anyone see you leave the castle. Must tell you some things about Dr. Orloff and his experiments." " An interesting piece of penmanship do you not think," said Samantha. "Perhaps wishes to be our ally, but I also agree with Becky. I have learned in the past that her intuition is usually not far off so we must be very careful. I also feel that it is our duty to see exactly what Dr. Orloff is up to and Heidi may be the only person to tell us." About an hour later the three young women slipped quietly out a side door of the castle and made their way into the garden. They found Susan crouching in the shadows and Samantha noticed a nasty welt on the young woman's face. "Susan, what has happened to you face," she said as the assistant moved into the light? "did you have an accident?" "It is nothing," replied the young girl. "I was a little slow in joining Dr. Orloff when he left the parlor and he slapped me a couple of times. He can be such a brut e at times." "How awful," said Samantha. "Now what is it that you want to tell us." "Only that you all must be extremely careful," she replied. "These experiments that Dr. Orloff is carrying out are bizarre even for a noted scientist like him." "Exactly what is he doing," said Rebecca? "And why should we be careful?" "It all started over a year ago," she replied. "At that time Dr. Orloff's wife was his assistant and being a lot older then him her looks were beginning to fade. He was working with snake venom at the time and had learned how to alter its DNA composition. He thought that he could regain her beauty by giving her injections of this venom. everything seems to work fine but in the last few weeks something has gone terribly wrong. the poor woman experiences fits of savagery that you could not imagine. Dr. Orloff keeps her locked in a cell in the laboratory and is trying to prefect a drug to combat this but I do not think he will be successful." "And how is his work progressin g," said Samantha." "He has developed a new drug that he has not yet tested," she replied. "But I am certain that it will turn his wife into something monstrous. He will not listen to reason and plans to test it on her tonight." "Is there any way we can stop him," said Rebecca? "No, but I have developed a small gas cartridge that will either kill the monster or turn it back into its original state." "Then that is our only chance," said Samantha. "Can you get us into the laboratory?" "Yes, but we must hurry," she replied. "Orloff has left the castle for supplies and will return very soon." Heidi led the three women back into the castle and up three flights of stairs to the laboratory. She unlocked a large door and they entered the elaborate work station with its countless glass bottles and flasks of bubbling liquid. "Hide yourselves in the dark corners of the laboratory and be prepared for anything," she said giving Samantha a small Very Pistol and four glass tipped cartridges. "I must go now for Orloff will be back at any moment." The three women hid themselves as instructed and about ten minutes later the laboratory door opened and Dr. Orloff and and Heidi entered. Orloff looked over the equipment that lay on the table and then selected a flask of very ominous looking liquid. "I think we have enough of my new drug here to proceed with the next step of our experiment Miss Steinberg," he said. "I have sedated my wife so bring her out and fasten her to the examination table." As the young girl disappeared to carry out her task Dr. Orloff filled a syringe with his new drug. A few minutes later Heidi emerged leading a tall attractive elderly women by the hand. She then fastened her to the examining table and then moved to Dr. Orloff's side to await further instructions. "I trust that you have her tightly secured ," said Dr. Orloff approaching the table and swabbing his wife's arm with alcohol. "We have no idea how this new drug of mine will react with her body." He plunged the syringe into an artery and emptied it contents. As first there seemed to be no reaction as Heidi peered at the instruments she used to monitor the vital signs of the woman. As she looked more closely at these gauges she found subtle changes were taking place. As the powerful drug made from snake venom entered her bloodstream her heart rate increased and her breathing became more rapid. This lasted for only a minute or two for then her whole body began to metamorphosis. first her fingers began to elongate and web together turning them into savage claws. Secondly two long sharp fangs began to protrude from her mouth and this was all climaxed with a super human strength she now posses giving her the strength and tenacity of six men. She opened her eyes and slowly rose from the table snapping the straps that held her. Lashing out at Heidi she knocked the young girl to the floor now a true monstrosity from Hell able to deal a death blow to anyone who stood in her path. "Oh My God," crie d Dr. Orloff backing away from the creature! "What have I done!" The monster's metamorphosis was now complete and it stood snarling at Orloff. It pushed the examining table away with a flick of one of its mutant hands and then began to move towards the terrified doctor. Lumbering along like some type of non-human She Beast it threw off any obstacle that lay in its path. "Oh My God No," cried Dr. Orloff as he backed against the far wall! "Help me someone, Please!" The mutant seized the doctor with both of its claws and then sank its fangs into the side of his neck tearing away flesh and bone. Orloff collapsed into a mass of blood as the creature turned looking for its next victim. "No, No, Oh Please No," said Heidi scrambling to her feet as the mutant moved towards her! Samantha slipped a cartridge into her Very Pistol and cocked its hammer. Stepping out of the shadows she raised the weapon and aimed directly at the creature squeezing the trigger. The laboratory was instantly filled with a bl ue choking smoke that made the mutant stop and turn in the direction of the young woman. she ejected the spent cartridge and slipped a fresh one into the weapon. Firing once more this time at point blank range she was able to immerse the monster in gas. It stopped for a moment took a step then sank into the blue mist. "I think that you have stopped her Sam," said Rebecca. "Thank God you were able to put that creature to rest." "Yes, Dr. Orloff's monster is finally finished Miss Jones," said Heid °i. "But look how her body is changing." As the gas cleared the monster was indeed beginning to revert back into its original shape. Its fangs began to disappear and claws changed back into a normal hand. "I was praying that this would happen," said Heidi. "My gas has reversed the metamorphosis. When Dr. Orloff's wife awakens she may not even remember what has happened." "Yes, but here will be an investigation," said Rebecca. "Do you think Orloff's wife will be held responsible for all this Sam?" "That is for the courts to decide Becky," she replied. "Dr. Orloff was using a very powerful drug and she had no control over her actions." "In any event the two of you will have to extend your vacation a little," said Susan. "And after all Germany is such a beautiful country this time of year." The End Tweet
