Sherry Wesston loved her job working as a waitress at 'J's Diner.' The only challenge was her boss, J. Muckworm. He could have been 'Scrooge's' distant relative.

her keys. She gasped as she looked up and saw a dark figure in the
shadows.

"I'm sorry if I frightened you!" the husky yet familiar voice whispered.
As the shadow moved underneath the dimmed light, Sherry saw Kyle's
handsome features, short, black, wavy hair with several rebellious
locks that fell in a soft curl across his forehead; dark brown eyes
that resembled pools of milk chocolate she would'nt mind drowning in.

"Thank you!" she blushed, averting her eyes away, realizing she was
staring. Kyle smiled, "You are welcomed. Be careful driving home."

Chapter 3

The day started off as usual with the exception Kyle had requested the
day off to take his widowed mother to a doctor appointment.

Jay Muckworm, a short, stocky man in his late forties, and receding
hairline, would never admit it, but he did not like when any of his
prized employees missed work. Not that he would ever let them know how
much he missed them; he knew they were hard workers, and the day went
much smoother when they were there. To him, they were valuable
commodities, a means of securing more business.

"This chili has too much meat in it!" the boss screamed at the cook's
assistant, Mike who was filling in for Kyle. Mr. Muckworm had enough,
and was angry that he had to work with people he considered to be
idiots everyday. Balling his hand in a fist he reared back and jerked
his arm, aiming to hit Mike in the shoulder, but as luck had it, Mike
dodged the hit just as Sherry was coming around the corner and received
the blow in her right eye.

Mike hurried to her side as she screamed in pain, covering her hand over
her badly swollen eye. Jay Muckworm huffed under his breath as he
walked back into his office without a word and slammed the door shut.

Marie and Dianne hurried to Sherry's side, "let's put some ice on it!"

Chapter 4

The next day, Sherry forced herself out of bed as she slowly made her
way to her mirror on her dresser. "Argghh!" she groaned as she saw the
entire eye was black and blue. Digging through her drawers, she pulled
out some make-up and attempted to cover up as much as she could.

"Sherry, what happened?" Kyle asked in shocked as he saw through her
painted mask. "I bumped into a door," she lied, then seeing his
expression, filled her with remorse. Kyle's face hardened, a look of
vindictiveness was in his eyes.

Sherry tried avoiding any further direct confrontation with Kyle, afraid
she would fall apart emotionally, knowing his need to be her protector.

When it was time to leave for the day, Sherry was the first one out.
She was relieved it wasn't her day to close. Kyle, still cleaning, saw
her walk out the back door. His mind echoed the words of the other
employees as they described what really had happened. "The old miser
was aiming for Mike, and slugged Sherry instead. He didn't even
apologize when he realized he had hurt her," Dianne had been more than
willing to share.

Chapter 5

The day seemed longer than usual. The tension was hovering over the
diner like a black storm cloud. When it was time to close, Kyle
quickly cleaned his area and left the building without a word. Sherry
was also quiet as she and Marie needed to stay and prepare for the
following day's meals. Jay Muckworm was in his office as usual,
tabulating over the cash receipts, making certain not one penny was
missing.

A strong gusty wind blew the back door opened. Sherry turned around and
slowly peeked around the corner. She cautiously made her way down the
hall which was located down the side of the kitchen. She saw Kyle was
standing inside the door of the office holding a .32 caliber pistol in
his hand aimed at Mr. Muckworm who was sitting behind his desk. Mr.
Muckworm's face was white, and covered in perspiration as he stared at
Kyle holding the lethal weapon in his direction.

Sherry gasped, but it was too late. She heard three shots blasts
through the air, and watched as Mr. Muckworm's white shirt stained with
freshly crimson blood.

Kyle slowly turned towards her as the gun slipped through his fingers
and dropped at his feet. Marie heard the gunshots and quickly called
the police from the next room.

Several moments later, Marie followed behind the police officers as they
arrested Kyle. After he was read his rights, he was led out the back
in handcuffs. Sherry stood nearby, speechless. Kyle walked passed
her, pausing as their eyes met, "he will never hurt you again!"
